Trump thread part 2 (Or anything else we want to talk about that's ridiculous in politics today)

AOC and "the squad" had a plan to force House votes on key issues, like healthcare reform, etc, which would force the party members to publicly show their hand as to where they stood. It was all bullshit, as they never employed the strategy, but it would have been a way of building a movement within the party rather than compromising.
Which part isn't true?

I said it.

Politics shouldn't be played like that and you should probably understand that before we try to dissect your idea of "et al"...

They shouldn't? Working within the system to make change happen or at least let the public know where their representatives stand..no good? Whose rule is that? Is that a canned opinion you read?

Et al is the other members who call themselves the squad. Obviously.

You are willfully ignorant and obviously not going to admit that you don't want Congress to function properly.

Go on about corporate shills.

That's bound to get good.

I was talking about a strategy of making it function. For people, not for decorum or whatever. You're talking about not rocking the boat.

Corporate shills?

Didn't say anything imaginary. I'll just begin however I see fit though. If no compromise is possible, agreement is a betrayal of constituents.
So it's "My way or the highway"?

This is why the extreme left and extreme right fail. And will always fail.

I'm pretty far left but I (kind of) understand how the federal government works - very fucking slowly. Like a policy enacted today will actually take 4-5 years to implement and get going and actually make a difference in people's lives.

Fractions of an inch at a time. That's how you win this battle. And it takes ALL of us pushing in roughly the same direction.

I get it. "It takes too long and too many good people get hurt." It sucks. I know. I lost the love of my life due to policy decisions. But that's life. You don't stop pushing to bitch that someone isn't pushing hard enough in the exact direction you want.

You don't have to win every day. You just need to fight every day.

Both parties and our entire government are broken. I’m not a supporter of any democrat or republican. In fact I wish both parties would fail and a party for real working people, not billionaire donors would emerge.

When the democrats controlled congress and the presidency, why didn’t they pass minimal wage or national healthcare laws?
Because Progressives were fewer in number in the House and Senate and there were too many Democrats who made a lot of money off of Wall Street during the Clinton Era to do their fucking jobs?

What do you want me to tell you? That was several election cycles ago and the attitude of the country and Congress has shifted dramatically in the last couple of years. Progressive candidates have been running and winning. How big was The Squad when that was happening vs. now? Was The Squad even a thing?

Biden instituted a $15 minimum federal wage, meaning nationally isn't far behind (once we move past a broken House). A lot of employers around me have dramatically increased their starting wages, and they're still crying for workers.

Biden has finally managed to start negotiating drug prices with Big Pharma. Every year the noise about the "For Profit Healthcare System" gets louder and louder as more people fall victim to it. Which tells me that within my lifetime we will likely have nationalised health care.

The Federal Government moves at a glacially slow pace. I get it. It doesn't mean you stop pushing when it gets hard. It means you dig deep and push even harder. Biden is moving us in the right direction. It's not as fast as you want. It's not as fast as I want. But it is moving and you have to acknowledge that.

Just watch what happens over the next 43 days.

This is what would have happened if the AOC followed through on her threat to oust Pelosi.

She and the other progressives would have looked like the clown show that the GOP looks like today.

AOC gets incremental change and how important it is to take your small wins when you can get them. And look what's happened since she was first elected. How many more Progressives are in Congress now? The Blue Dog Democrats are on their way out too.

Our Congress has turned into a battleground.

I can't believe that the citizens support half of the behavior of their legislators.

It seems like Trump really underlined that bullies are the coolest.

They are acting like Patton when Eisenhower would be preferred.

In an idealized system every representative would just represent thier constituency. The problem though is that you 435 districts that have representatives in Congress and all 435 districts have their own unique wants and needs. So a strictly representative system is not quite as easy as it sounds. This is further complicated by the extreme gerrymandering that goes on in many districts that results in representation that doesn't really match up with it's constituents quite the way it should. If every representative just stuck firmly to only what their constituents wanted then it would be very unlikely anything would ever get accomplished. Then add to that that many states have both democrat and republican districts and therefore a mix of democrat and republican representatives. As if that weren't enough you have those politicians that don't really listen to their constituents but rather they gaslight a percentage of their constituents into believing they should be outraged about this thing or that person and they proceed to go after that thing or person in order to get social media likes. Take Matt Gaetz for example. i'm sure the people in his district have much more important needs and concernsthen Hunter Biden's Laptop, trying to Impeach Joe Biden even though there is no evidence of high crimes or misdemeeners , or going after the latest company doing anything that might be percieved as "woke" and yet those are the sort of things he focuses all his time and energies on and he gets all sorts of feedback thru social media telling him he's doing a great job because he's got that portion of his constiuents focused on that stuff while the majority of eople in his district is stuggling with the same bread and butter issues that most people are stuggling with.

As if all that wasn't enough to make for a dysfunctional government You also have those representatives that really don't care about anything other then how they can profit themselves from their positions. There is also a big problem due to both sides constantly trying to undo the progress either of their opponants make. For example, many of Trump's supporters thing he is one of if not the greatest president ever and that he accomplished all these great things. In reality though Trump accomplished very little beyond a huge tax break for the walthiest 10% of the country that has ultimately added trillions of dollars to the national debt and he managed to change the balance of the supreme court for decades to come and that he really was only able to accomplish by first going against long standing precedent by taking the appointment that rightfully belonged to Obama (Neil Gorsuch) and then a few years later going against the new precedent establish with Gorsuch when he appointed Amy Coney Barrett. Other then those few things though most of what he accomplished was undoing any things Obama had accomplished. Except Obamacare which he failed at repealing mainly because he had no real plans for replacing it.

Well I would have to say there were some painful lessons learned by Trump and McCarthy this past week, both of whom learned the hard way that it's not a good idea to attack the people who hold that future of your fate in their hands. Trump learned this by attack the judge and his court who hold the fate of his businesses and wealth in the decision the judge will be making on Trumps fraud case in New York. McCarthy learned his lesson by attacking the people (democrats) who were the only ones who might be able to help him keep his position as Speaker of The House, by blaming the Democrats for almost closing the government the day after they were the ones who helped him keep the Government from shutting down. Which was a particularly stupid move since getting help from the Democrats to keep his job was already a challenge because he went back on his promise to not unilaterally start the Impeechment Inquiry against Joe Biden.

I think I know partially why. Obama was naive and thought he could usher in a new era of cross aisle co-operation and blew his chance to bully things through. Unbeknownst to him, the day he won the election, top ranking republicans met at a restaurant to plot and pledge to block all Obama initiations; no matter what. {that black bastard won't get a thing done}

By the time he realized, the strong majority was gone. This does not excuse his half-hearted medical plan. He should have gone with medical for all.

The dems of 2020-2022 delivered nothing. No student debt relief, no healthcare, no minimum wage.

I thought that was their entire platform.

The republicans don’t even have a coherent message to not deliver on.

Sad facts are both parties are owned by corporate interests that are way more interested in status quo than any changes to help people. I’m done voting for republicans and democrats.

And may I ask WHO was in control of the Senate from 2020 to 2022? You know, the place between the House and the Presidency where the Democrats were in control?

Allow me to answer for you - Mitch McConnell and the GOP.

And guess who sets the agenda for the Senate? The thing were bills are introduced and debated upon and finally voted on? Why that would be the Majority Leader of the Senate, who in 2020 through 2022 was :checksnotes: Mitch McConnell.

Now, final question. In your honest opinion, if the House had brought resolutions to the Senate for student debt relief, federal healthcare reform, and minimum wage increases, would they have passed the Senate that was controlled by the GOP? Or would they have been wasting everybody's time working on something that would have been dead the moment it left the House?
