More details in this thread here: here.
I noticed a week or so ago that the tips of the leaves on one plant started to curl up a VERY VERY little bit and turned yellow. Im talking the VERY VERY tip, unless you look hard you don't even notice it.
I figured I was over ferting so I have watered with plain water that last 2 times...
the single fingered leaves on all the plants have pretty much wilted away or are close to it. I figured, not a problem....
then the next set of leaves on 2 of my plants turned a nice uniform yellow..... now Im starting to think I have a problem
3 of the 4 plants I watered only 2 days ago with .5Ls drank the water in only 2 days...
So, here is what Im pondering...
1. I think I have a N def based on the uniform yellowing starting from the bottom of the plant and working its way up.
2. I think my plants may be rootbound as well, based on the drinking of the water in only 2 days.
Now for the questions...
I don't want to transplant all the plants because I don't have the soil or the room to do so. I plan to flip to 12/12 within the next couple days, even though I really want to wait, so I can sex the plants.
Question 1. Any issues with transplanting 1-2 weeks into flowering? Ive read about people doing it all the time, so Im not SO worried about this, Id just like some varification.
Im about 99.5% sure I have a N def as well.
Question 2. Any issues giving a high N feedings during the first 2 weeks of flowering?
Also, any insight is invaluable to me. Please, share your knowlege with me.
Thanks, hopefully I can get this sorted out.
BTW, Ill take some pics tomorrow so you can actually see what I am seeing
Hey Bro,
Those bottom leaves are gonna turn yellow and fall off...they are getting no light the canopy has shut em out...its natural and you need not worry or change your ferts.
I grew for 3 years with a similar light set up as you have here. I started with my first grow in a closet, 18"x40" . I used two 150hps. I was not fortunate to have any decent vent fan so I was forced to circulate alot, which really helped my plants thicken up...I grew 5 plants from schwagg bag seed, in 3 gallon containers. Fed with miracle grow...you said earlier that you think your mylar is ghetto..man my whole setup was ghetto. I went on to grow the plants out to like 3' and had no idea about hermies...well I got pumped full of hermies and early too, so my six oz harvest was more like 4oz of seed and 2 oz of leaf...well I was not distraced, I adapted, improvised and overcame. Got some decent genetics to work with, set up a lil sea of green..and every harvest for the next 3 years got better and better, I do have to tell you though, the best harvest I got was with the 2 150w hps and an added 175w MH, that was six oz of sweet sensimilla, you are limited with the smaller lights, they just do not have the Lumens, you can expect 1/4 to 1/2 gram per watt every 30 days of growth...I have been using a 400w hps for the last 3 years with a couple 465 squirlle cages and a nice air cooled reflector. I have found that I can get up to 8 ounces growing in a 6 sq ft flowering chamber with 4 ft vertical height .... now keeping in mind that I make no claim to be a great grower, I consider myself satisfactory enough to keep myself in smoke.
I have a bunch of experience with the smaller light setups and hope that I can help you out. The important thing is to not get discouraged, and enjoy it...it is well worth the 3 months of waiting to have good clean FREE smoke.
Wow I do not think I ever typed so many words in one sitting, I am off to soak my fingers in some epsom salts
Thank you for doing this, I always wanted to see how someone else would do with a similar setup as I learned with.
Sorry to hear about the bagseed mishap. I decided to buy some seeds, even though they were pretty cheap, just for that reason.
Sounds like you have a well oiled machine going now though
Im sure that you will be able to help me out alot. Sounds like you were in a very similar situation as me a few years ago.
How many plants do you run in your SOG, and what strain are you growing?
I have ~9sqft to work with for flowering, and 6ft of height, not that I would grow 6ft plants under a 400w HPS. Ive been tossing around ALOT of ideas on how to carry on with my setup and growing regimen.
Im very torn between doing a SOG, a 2-3 plant system, or a mixture of both. The strain that I will be growing will work well in a SOG or I could veg for 6months and grow 2-3 large plants.
That would be very cool if you wanted to share some knowlege and insight with me.
I guess Ill carry on with what I was doing. Just got the veg area up and running, now I just need to move the cabinet and get the flowering area setup. I think Im going to start 3-5 seeds any day now, since Im planning to veg for at least 2 months on this one.
i can vouch for buckfush here.
"you've come a long way baby!!" hehehe
in all seriousness though, with regard to the smaller setups he's done some great things.
his experience in that area should be of great value to you
bf, it's about time your ass stopped lurking aroud and posted some thing
The SOG was what I was doing for about a year with the 2 150s, I had that streamlined, it was an attic setup, couldnt even stand up, but I managed to spend a lil coin and build a nice little insulated and air condition cooled spot up there, I had a momma that was from some seeds I got from a friend( I was way to scared to order seeds back then, this was in 98.) I had her under 175w MH, she produced about 20 to 30 cuttings every two weeks, they were rooted under 80watts flourescent for the first week and 160w flourescent for the second, i rooted in a verm/per mix and they were awesome rooted so well in 2 weeks, then the best 18 went into 4inch squares and spent 2 weeks under the 175MH with the momma, then the best 10 went into 1/4 of my 20"x40" ...every 2 weeks I harvested between 1 1/2 oz to 2 oz, at the end last harvest before I moved I filled the area and added the 175MH into the flower chamber, it was at the time the best thing I had ever seen. Ha Ha then came my first 400 w grow, it was a 400MH - 1 clone a friend carried back from Cali , 2 gallon container .....in 100 degree dark time attic temps, when the light was on it was in the 90s...I was amazed after growing dwarf plants for a year in 4" pots, this thing finished at 3 1/2 ft and was beautiful. I harvested 5 oz from it...not bad considering I cooked it when the lights were off. Presently I do not have anything going on, I just finished up the last of a line of Sensi Star plant that was 4 years old...check out the Sensi Star story my buddy MyBeans420 told , http://www.icmag.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=506 The plant that I just finished was the end of that bloodline. RIP SS I have over the last few years grown the stressed sensi stars my buddys thread spoke of ... in a small setup, 18"x40" this time, but no heat problems, top and bottom setup, top with a 400mh and bottom 400hps. I harvested enough to keep me in smoke as usual . I am now in limbo sittin on a bunch of awesome genetics from SD, I am entering a new phase of my learning, soon to set up with an actual room, not just a lil box 2 600hps 2 400hps and as you said earlier this awsome internet guide at my fingertips.
MyBeans you know the deal....I am under the spell, hooked on the forum thing now...heheheh...seriously This forum is the best thing I have found in years to help the advancement of what we do. Kudos to Gypsy and the rest of you fingertip callous having , eyes burnin, and camera battery draining heads...thank all of you for the help I have gotten (without ever asking) from this forum in the last 6 months.
I will be watchin ya buddy and I hope you do well with that 250mh and 150hps, I loved every minute of my 150s and still have them, may get em bronzed soon.
thats alot of seeds beans. I can see how that could happen though. I haven't even flowered my first grow yet, but I already know that as long as Im growing Ill continue to try new strains and in the future, maybe try to do some crosses myself.
BF, I have the 250w MH and 150w HPS going right now, but tomorrow Im getting rid of the 150w HPS, and putting the 250w MH in a 4sqft area which will serve as my veg room. I dont' think Ill have room for a mom, but the way I want to run it, I won't need a mom.
In the next couple weeks, Ill have this guy up and running, in a 9sqft area...

you're on your way gog,
that 400 should increase your yields signifigantly.
i use 600s to cover 3x3 areas. gives a total of 66watts psf., but 44 will be a VERY noticable difference for you.
as far as the beans, i must confess i'm a bean junkie.. hehehe
good luck on your grow. i'll be keeping an eye on it
Tallest plant is nearing 8 inches, most are right around 7 inches. Still no alternating nodes
I fed last night, hopefully I didn't overdo it, should be able to tell in a couple days. Hopefully they just take off, that would be nice.
OH OH, one last thing, Im horrible at taking macros, but one of my plants has what I believe are female preflowers. Behind the stipule, there is a teardrop with 2 hairs coming out. I could be wrong, but it sure looks like a female preflower to me.
The rest of them haven't shown any preflowers that I can see, maybe in a few days though.
Hopefully Im right about the preflower, and all my plants mature and start to really take off.
Look-n-good...compact. Sounds like you have a female preflower, I saw earlier where you mentioned overwatering...just curious, when you water now do you flood the pot till extra runs out of the bottom or are you watering lightly around plant bases?
Reason I am asking is that I have found that if I have proper drainage, that by flooding till run off, the root structure spreads faster. At 30 days most of my seeded plants would be 12" to 18" if left un topped...it has been a while since I left one untopped though, I try to top them at like 6" or 8" tall, if I have 6 to 8 branch points available I top it and let the branching begin, if they are not showing preflowers by 30 days I usually have enough branches to take 1 and drop it in some water and under a seperate little flourescent under 12/12...it usually shows sex before it shows roots.
You said you are using Foxfarm soil, what nutrient value did it have? I use a plain growers mix, amend it with some organic goodies and water with plain water for like 3 weeks most of the time, some plants need sooner some later.
When I water, a good bit of it drains all the way through actually.
My overwatering problems where back when they were in 16 oz cups a while back, since I transplanted Ive been using a cooking scale to weigh my pots that way I know exactly when to water.
I think the reason my plants are so short has a combination of factors. Of course Ive made alot of mistakes, as this is my first grow. The strain doesn't help either, hopefully my other beans will grow faster than these.
I don't think this soil has much in the way of nutes in it, although I could be wrong. On the bag, it has a feeding schedule for the foxfarm nutes. I bought the wrong bag, next time Ill get the other stuff.
A tripod would be a very good investment, especially at $5
Plants seem to be doing pretty good, no signs of nute burn from the feeding 2 days ago yet. Some of the discoloring is starting to go away on one plant.
All plants starting their 8th node except the runt, which is only on its 6th. Ill keep the runt around anyway, as I didn't grow near enough plants to fill my area.
How much longer should I veg these things for?
They still haven't shown alternating nodes yet, which is when people tell me the plant should really take off.
Gonna start some MT seeds i think, Ill keep everyone updated.
I have 9 seeds in cups right now, so far none have broken the surface
I soaked the seeds on sunday for ~24 hours, then placed them in soil.
Its been almost 3 days now, and NO sprouts yet When I started this current grow, it took a matter of hours for the seeds to break through the soil. I hope I didn't do something wrong this time....
BTW, I have 5 top44 seeds, and 4 MTs going.
I know, I know, patience grasshopper, in the past, its taken nearly a week for seeds to sprout for me. Im just a little worried because about a month ago these seeds sprouted much faster, and I started them pretty much exactly the same way.
I could honestly care less about the top44 seeds, Im more concerned about the MT seeds, since they are nearly $10 a bean.
Can't wait till I can start working with clones...
As for the grow at hand...
Everything is going OK. The plants were drinking 16ounces of water in only 2 days, so yesterday I watered with 32ozs. Hopefully I didn't overdo it.
I trimmed all the dead leaves, pretty much the first 2 nodes of all the plants. One of them has some issues with the 3rd node, but Im not too worried about it.
12/12 is just around the corner, can't wait. Im thinking I will just give them a full 2 months, since Im so close anyway. The longer I veg, the bigger my harvest will be is the way Im looking at it.
Fingers crossed for those seeds...especially the MTs
I'dlike to see those mat tundra thru to bud. A fellow toker budd of mine is from the Alaskan tundra, but there I guess they call it matanuska thunder f#ck. So I've heard good things.
top44 looks good, maybe you could help me with my veg, hehe. But, it looks like I got it worked out, keep up the good work, and updates.
Patience will come after harvest, when you're smoking that sweet herb.
dezer, Im going to make a new thread to document the MT grow, Ill make sure I put the link in this thread.
My interest in the MT, actually started back in 2000 or so. I found the CC website for the first time, and read there for about 6 months. During those 6 months, MT, or MTF, like you said, was a very popular strain, people raved about the potency.
Then I came back to the net a few months ago, and didnt' see anything to speak of about MT. BOGs strains seem to be the new craze. So I figured, what the hey, Ill give MT a go and see if it treats me right.
Well, when I checked my plants after lights on today, low and behold 3/4 MTs had sprouted, and 4/5 top44s had sprouted. Guess I was worried over nothing. Still, it feels as though a burden has been lifted from my shoulders, I was VERY worried that I did something wrong this time.
Heres some pics of the babies. BTW, some of them a kinda yellow, should I be worried?
Closest plant in that pic is only 3 inches from the bulb. No problems so far, but Im going to have to move the light up in a couple days or the plant will be touching the bulb.
The top leaves are blocking out the light to the very bottom leaves...that'll happen the denser the canopy becomes. No worries, it is looking healthy from here, nice big fan leaves.
I saw the tripod I linked you to before recently at wal-mart, it was a couple dollars more but still less after the shipping on the $5 one....good luck.
BF, I was talking about the seedlings that just sprouted. After your first post here I stopped worrying about the lower fan leaves dying. I just trim them now as they die.
As for the tripod, Ill have to check out wally world on that one.
1 unsure, but looking somewhat male at this point :l
If the 2 that I project to be girls end up male, I would be VERY suprised. They both have the teardrop with hairs coming out, one plant has 2 hairs coming out of the preflowers, the other only has 1, but looks almost identical in every other way.
The unsure plant is the oddball pheno, fingers crossed that we get some hairs in the next few days.
The male looking one looks very male, but this is my first grow, so you never know, it could suprise me and pop some hairs out for me. I have high doubts as the preflower is not in the shape of a teardrop, but a more in the nature of a ball with a very pointy nipple, if that makes any sense.
More good news (2 confirmed girls on the healthiest plants is good news to me ) The last 2 seeds (1 top44 and 1 MTF) have shown themselves above the surface, and the somewhat yellow seedlings have turned a nice green color.
These little guys are showing me some nice vigor, a few of them already showing a good 1-2 inches of root out the bottom. That proves that at this point in life they are majority root, as the root is probably 5-6 times as long as the actual plant if not more.
Im going to start flowering on the first of september Ive decided, hopefully I can take some clones by then, although its not huge on my list of priorities. More for the practice then anything else really.
How long should the growths (dont' know what else to call them) be before I give them the snip?
Can't wait to start flowering, Im anxious to see if the aroma changes at all, and how strong it gets. This will be the first time Ive fliped the switch to 12/12, so I have no idea whatsoever what to expect.
