Just got back from our walk. This fire is right on top of us. About 5 miles to the south west. Smells like a bond fire. News is saying resources to fight it are thin. Already deployed to other fires across the country. Pretty sure we are safe here. But a bit concerned. Wind is blowing due north and you can see the smoke going righ down the front range. I have several fiends living up there. Wow......

attention all you doggie lovers

what do ya all feed yer dogs?

im guessing the best diet is 100% carnivore?

is there some good dry dog foods that come close to carnivore?

I see some dry dog foods rated by protein content , like 35-42-44% protein?

is the higher the protein percent any indicator as to the quality of the food?

thanks

for a little dog , 3-5 lbs 😁

I’m sure my doggos would love a fresh carnivore diet I’m sure but they only get fresh meat and bones now and then. I use this brand for my cats and dogs. Make a good regular poop and dog owners that pick up after their dogs know what I mean about that. My dogs also get some of what we are eating too as long as it’s not spicy or bad for them. They also enjoy raw veggies as a treat.

I think so as by nature they are carnivores.

There is no kibble IMO that is good for them.
IMO this is another case of 'just because we/ they
can (eat it), does that mean we/ they should?".
Grains are essentially again... from my research...
sugar and not easily digestible etc., et al.

I began transitioning my Scooter off her kibble
and began feeding her more carnivore.

There are easy to find nutrient needs for dogs.
And pretty easy and cheaper than kibble recipes
to make your own complete nutrients dog food.

That said... I am still wanting to blame myself
for killing my littles.
She went into Diabetic ketoacidosis and her
kidneys shut down. It was horrendous.

I know I cannot blame myself but I do as there
is a good possibility that I created the quiet storm
that lead to her death. I will never know for certain
of course but I am certain I will forever blame myself
for contributing to her demise even though I was very
slowly transitioning her diet.

I would have them run blood work for diabetes
prior to changing from kibble to meat based.

So very happy that diet is a consideration for
the peanut, hoping that means she will be
soon going to be with Mr. & Mrs. littleleaf :)

Diabetic ketoacidosis is a serious complication of diabetes.
The condition develops when the body can't produce enough insulin. Insulin plays a key role in
helping sugar — a major source of energy for muscles and other tissues — enter cells in the body.

Without enough insulin, the body begins to break down fat as fuel. This causes a buildup of acids
in the bloodstream called ketones. If it's left untreated, the buildup can lead to diabetic ketoacidosis.
If you have diabetes or you're at risk of diabetes, learn the warning signs of diabetic ketoacidosis
and when to seek emergency care.

Is that what you feed your babies?

IMO... simple boiled chicken and rice is safer.
Like I said, lots of research into canine diet
and their nutritional needs has lead me to
better understand that dog kibble is a business
first and foremost and as w/ any for profit,
is not concerned w/ the end results.

So... this is my personal opinion based
on all the information on the topic I've
gleaned over the years :)

We became convinced that dogfood was why we were losing our German Shepherds to cancer, so we boiled chickens for Lola and she still died of a heart tumor at age 8.

We are back to feeding Purina.
