This made my day...
Just a few minutes ago I was making a new mix for my additional new no-tills and making my worm bin (smart-pot) medium while jamming to some tunes and still reading icmag..
I was dumping the bu compost in the pots when I seen this...
Had to post it up. A live worm still in my compost bag..I freaking lost it in the mix somehow... Now I want to find it because when I finish the mix his ass is gonna fry from the compostin...

So I held back on all the goodies and will top dress later. Didn't have the heart to fry the guy.He traveled such a long way..... Sprinkled maybe 1/4 cup alfalfa, 1/4 neem and some mineral rocks in.
HE will live to see another day!!

don't feel bad. rained here yesterday and while I was waiting for my guys to get to the job site I saw like 5-6 black crows pecking in the middle of the road....D-Day for worms.
I run over, scare the birds away and end up with 20-30 big guys to add to the worm bin. figured they'd like that place better than the inside of a birds stomach.

Our behavior is nuts with worms isn't it? Other people must find our behavior really weird, but yeah, I'm damn guilty of worm gathering as well after a good rain. Completely inefficient way to spend my time but it's pleasurable.

So what I did was place a good 18g of nearly finished compost into a worm bin and brought it inside. I checked it yesterday and there is all these tiny red bugs that seem parasitic to other bug life. They are bright red and I saw tons of them stuck on beetles that were having a hard time moving about. They were also astuck all over a grub and an earwig. So far I haven't noticed them on worms but their are tons of them all over the top of my bin.
Is this bad?

sounds like red mites to me. try adding two very ripe avocados on an icecream lid or something similar over night and taking the avacados out every morning, washing them under the cold water. they seem to make their way onto the lid and enjoy the food.

My red 'worm bin' is full to the brim with 'bedding' and I never see these guys anymore...so i trek down there during the 'night' with my green LED spot light that straps to my head to see if i can catch one and lo and behold a lone worm soldier is cruising the surface! He's got some friends piggybacking while he's on the surface too lol

Awwww I wish I could get the pics off my old phone. Whilst working as a groudskeeper for a golf course I see soooooo many worms in the morning. One morning I rolled up to a tee box and it in like a worm porn fest going on. HUGE earthworms were mating all over the tee box and I snapped a few pics before the Sun rose up high enough to send them back underground. LoL, I miss my worm porn....

Disregard the green glow from my strap on LED spot light lol, but I mention that I like keeping 'clusters' of clover growing in my containers, this is a good example of some that have been living in this no-till container for a good 7 or 8 months:

I started a worm farm a few months back and all was going good until the other day when I was curious to see how many worms I had now. When I lifted the lid there were very few to be found. I believe I over fed them and prob fed them the wrong things. I had way too many cannabis branches and other green like spent barley beans things causing too much heat due to composition. Lesson learned! Feed the right foods less often when starting out. I have new worms coming this week. I have one of those tower worm farms I got for xmas.
I can grow plants but fuck man did I get played by the worms?? lol
Any other advice is welcomed

I wouldn't use it as a stand alone drainage/aeration component,but that's not to say that it won't work. The problem may be the way shale is a sedimentary deposit. Not sure what 'expanded shale' is......but it may hold moisture,or perhaps compact your soil....mix up a 5 gallon pot with this in a soil mix and then dump a gallon of water in it and watch. Does it drain well...or not?

i like to keep a worm bin and a compost pile and going to start feeding my compost to the worms {so far its been horse poo and coffee grounds ~maybe a little char}
but i too got played by the worms {well sort of} last year i sourced some horse manure and it ended up having wormer which wiped out my worm population
besides that; i poured an old potted plant in my ROLS 'bin' {its a garbage can ~no i dont reco that} and it turned out to be a big cat pee donor leaving me w/ the soil actually in my pots and the need to start a new batch {w/ no EWC to my name after 2 years of worm farming}

ickyweed i would be a little guarded about that expanded shale too but it looks like it could be a good product
now; they say it is quarried {which isnt the best situation but} what i wonder is if it has something to do w/ the fracking industry and if it does i would avoid it on that merit

Looks kinda cool...I retract my former statement. I'd use it along with my standard assortment of drainage material...not sure what % in a ROLS like mine considering it's water retaining quality...it's something you have to get my hands on and work with in these types of recycled mixes we run here..
Perhaps as humic material builds up and it eventually reaches time for an additional aeration/drainage amending,I'd incorporate it at that point.
