the Hand Watering coco thread

Thanks guys. I'm not actually from the states so it's a little hard for my to buy direct from best buy. But will look for alternatives

you shouldn't need that much calmag with DG FP. try only using .5ml of calimagic. I would also recommend using DG Protekt which will help balance your ph so you won't need any ph up or down while adding silicon and K.

Thanks. What do you think was causing my brown spotting? Can too much CalMag do that? I just did a flush with ph'ed water/Calimagic only and new growth is looking better. Also added some gravel to my drainage trays so my pots aren't water logged.

Here's a question I've had for a while... I'd like to hear from a few people there experiences with feeding schedules when hand watering coco..
What I'd like to know are these things.

- nute line
-feed schedule, meaning feed/feed/water or feed with every watering
-nutrient strength, because I've heard feed lighter feed and feed every time to only feed once a week and feed heavy.

Got 2 harvests so far. First I fed to good runoff and kept ph good and got ok results... it got too hot...but Idid ok.

Second run didn't go so smooth in flower. Veg awesome.. flower,, I think I tried too hard.. burnt, to deficient I was scrachin my head... I came to the clusion I Burnt them.. only too late.. and my ph had climbed... I was doctoring other symptoms while never doing the obvious and checking runoff... still had a little crop, just a lot of burn yellow leaves to trim...

I'd like advice on feeding in coco.
I use botanicare kind nutes. Cal mag+ superthrive. And I have on hand some head masta additive, molasses, mammoth microbes, and need more but use hydrogaurd.

Brown spots is usually caused by lack of calcium..

I'm partial to calmag by botanicare, its calcium nitrate, and should absorb faster than carbonates, added bonus is it has iron in it.

So really you have 3 actions in that product to keep the leaves green, the Calcium, Magnesium and Iron.

Factor in your source water too to determine if you are low calcium. Off the top of my head, I have around 250-300 PPM of calcium in solution in various forms when using calmag with city tap.

So its like canna+sourcewater+calmag.

I switched to hand water every 3-5 days in veg. instead of what I was doing 4 times per day.
Then in flower bump in the multi waterings for the first 4 weeks they get 4 times per day on a seconds timer with a little run off. Then weeks 5 on they get 8 times per day little run off. And what a difference... def. 20-30% increase in yield. Watering this way in veg... Really help the roots develop. with the hand water. Thanks for all the tips in this thread guys!!

You do exactly what I do, it alway turns into an argument that no matter what, feed everyday to 30-40% run off. I go light on the nutes but only water in veg when they need it. Massive explosion of roots, then it's time to pour on the gas!

aaah no:biggrin:
#1- You do not need coco specific nutes to get the best results and ease of use. Read threads in this forum to see all the nute brands that work GREAT.

#2- You DO NOT need runoff and certainly not 40% runoff which is a massive waste of nutes. No runoff in coco works just as great as runoff. Check the grows on this forum with no runoff.

#3 Hand watering sucks:tiphat:

Hey guys here's a good story for handwatering coco.

I started this plant from seed a few months ago. It was was in a a 32 gallon rubermaid DWC hydro setup. I was having alot problems with it and I never installed a way for it to drain. It was driving me nuts. I decided to switch to coco and all I did was pull out the net pot and held it over a 2 gallon pot and filled in with the coco around the roots. There was no stall at all!! the plant just Kept humming right along. So if anyones having problems with there hydro setup it seems it's ok to transplant right to coco. I now have handwatering and simplicity with hydro growth rates. Now this was only 2 plants I did this with and they were not in bloom at the time. But this seems to work.

The wierd thing is I transplanted to this 5 gallon dishpan about a month ago
and everyday I water I can see the shape of the of the original container. The roots don't seem to be spreading around in their new home. Have you seen palnts get rootbound in 2 gallon Pots of coco bonecarver?

Great thread man. This place is filling up quickly with alot of good info
:yummy:
Plant looks really good.... If you ever transplant late and want a plant to root into a new space try this....
I use a product for the first 6 weeks of flower that keeps the roots healthy and allows it to grow more roots...
Coco grows finish with white healthy roots...

Is mad stuff .. have seen it turn root rot in bubblers into white new healthy crazy big roots in a matter of weeks..

Is it necessary to water to run off if the coco is constantly moist? If kept at a low ec fertigation would salt build up be an issue? Also has anyone used Botancare's Pure Blend Pro in coco?

Almost no runoff is needed, I did a run with blumats and it worked fine. Just keep things moist.

If we did have run off its because the blumat feeds a little too fast when the tank is full. I didn't make an effort to feed to runoff.

Thanks for the reply! Did you use a mineral base fertilizer or something similar to pure blend pro?

Half strength FTW IMO ;)

Half strength FTW IMO ;)

House and Garden nutrient, pure coco. I always go about half recommended from what H&G chart says, but I also use Calmag and Silica in veg(half strength) and also a few weeks into flower then I drop calmag and silica. I also use multizen when chart requires but half strength, same with BudXL. MOAB for the finish, and even used pure PH RO for the last week! Things are looking great over here, smoke is clean as ever and turning heads. Barely ever had runoff, I did maybe one flush mid flower with low lower feed of just A & B and did look for a little more runoff toward finishing flush. A few pints a day hand water, 3 gallon plastic pots(thinking of switching to smart pots next). Keep em wet!

GG4 pulled at 57 days.

Animal Cookies pulled at 57 days.

Coco substrate with #4 and perlite

Coco substrate with #4 and perlite

Has anyone used the mo'koko premium select coco substrate? I am using 60% that, 30% #4 sunshine, and 10% perlite. I just started using that in 10 gallon air pots. I am trying to figure out the watering schedule, it's a bit tricky. Any tips out there? I'm having some leaves doing the taco and some yellow spotting

blah blah blah :)

blah blah blah :)

Just wanna say hello, i have read this thread over and over along with other great coco threads out there. Im quite the novice grower and have only ran two grows with my current one being the second. Both times in coco, well the first time was a coco/perlite mix this time im going pure coco. I love coco it seems daunting at first with all this talk of EC and PH etc but it's all stuff you should be doing no matter what your medium including soil and i find it much easier then soil because i have complete control. Unlike cheap garden soil in which i am at battle with the control release ferts within it. Thanks to all the amazing people who have contributed their knowledge has helped a lot. Im doing an outdoor coco grow this season. Just getting my girls warmed up inside before the season really gets started. This grow should be much better than my already awesome first attempt, all thanks to you people.

sorry for the terrible photo quality i broke my good phone :/

I am just wondering why would you add in #4 Sunshine soil... YOr growing in coco, you dont want it to anymore water then it already does. Adding soil to your coco your be asking for issues with watering.
