what is peoples ideal soil depth?
looks like 18 inches is the preferred; but it seems like width is far more beneficial than depth.
would it be in my best interest to lower depth to 12 inches and add the soil for another foot of width?

if i was doing clones i would go for the 12 inches but i am popping seeds and worried taproot will want more depth . maybe just test some of both..

start with 5 yard mounds then work your way up from there...don't be a pussy:)

Joe whats your favorite Ca amendment you add to your mix? Albion will forever be my foliar supplement. I'm really glad you recommended that to me.

To my dirt?

I like crab or crustacean meal if I need N.

If not I follow Tainio's rule:
pH below 6, calcite lime
Above 7 gypsum
In between 1/2 of the Ca from calcite, 1/2 from gypsum

I think it was in a Robrites thread where he posts a recommend from Tainio

Metalosate Ca...it is a glycine chelated Ca. Ca is not mobile. So anytime you have plants growing this fast and large foliar Ca is a good idea

There are surely some other products as good by now but the only one I have tested is sea shield. So I can't make those recommends on experience

^ What joe said. I had some Low Ca symptoms popping up when there was 2 weeks of 102-107 degree temps. He explained how when big plants are drinking a shit load of water and transpiring at such a fast rate, Ca cant always keep up. I started hitting them twice per week at 3 grams per gallon of metalosate Ca foliar. It halted the deficiency and I could tell it was working even after just a few sprays.

found a post from tom stating various other bagged soils can be used instead of black gold; so that shouldn't be an issue. moving on .

"E.B.Stone has small boxes of similar stuff for cheap. I would bet perfectly fine results side by side with Tom's mix... which is great for larger batches for sure. But it doesn;t make too much sense to go buying huge bags of amendments and using a few pounds total."

"I think you will find EB Stones mixes to be inferior to the Black Gold I believe Tom started with the year this thread started. But with that mix you could probably use anything."

both posts are from Nomaad really close to each other.
confusing haha. not quite sure what he meant. i cant source stutzman chicken manure anywhere near me so i am going to use EB stone chicken manure

Hi, I ran EB bagged soil one year when I was hurting for funds and my plants felt the pain of me trying to save $$$. My experience was negative for sure. I have never had a problem with ff ocean forest. Some may not like it but I have used many pallets of the stuff with no prob. Good luck and have fun.

asked nicely twice now :) seems some aren't so quick to pick up on it :)

@trippn , i found this thread to be a place to come read, learn and look at epic large plant pics , not place to come ask heaps newbie questions .

lol.....
that's nice.
actually; it is called " the growing large plants outdoor thread"
which my questions are actually adequately pertaining too. what would actually be helpful is people answering questions; and not recommend something i am well aware of. at no point did i say i was a new grower.guess some people "didnt pick up on it"

maybe you didnt read the thread?
it is filled with "newbie questions" lol.
is that even a thing?
this is an internet forum homie; there is no hierarchy
not the medical feudal ages ;)
futhermore it is the off season. sorry for taking up space where there wont be any big plants for a few months anyways lol.

tree roots and clay prevent me from using the ground ; but i do plan on increasing soil in the future. we are still in a drought though; i cant afford 10% saturation at 30 gallons in a 300 gallon smart pot. ;p

socal still hurting bad

ya i think nomaad was strictly referring to their soil... hopefully their chicken shit is ok.. cant imagine bagged poop would fluctuate that much

So your using the powder vs the liquid

The liquid has to have some kind of "preservative" in it...probably meaning anti microbal. I personally do not want that anywhere near my plants. So I use the powder
