also; is black gold soil still the best formula or has somebody outdone them?
i can most likely source other soil easier/cheaper like " dr earth" but i have read a few horror stories and would rather have a current opinion on bagged soil if anybody knows. only filling 600 gallons so its not too bad

Start at the beginning. Thats what i'll do.

i honestly have like 15 tabs of different pages open lol.

been at if for quite awhile; but there is loads of unanswered questions or deleted information; i just figure this is a pretty relevant place to get questions answered hopefully by people who have done it ;)

found a post from tom stating various other bagged soils can be used instead of black gold; so that shouldn't be an issue. moving on .

"E.B.Stone has small boxes of similar stuff for cheap. I would bet perfectly fine results side by side with Tom's mix... which is great for larger batches for sure. But it doesn;t make too much sense to go buying huge bags of amendments and using a few pounds total."

"I think you will find EB Stones mixes to be inferior to the Black Gold I believe Tom started with the year this thread started. But with that mix you could probably use anything."

both posts are from Nomaad really close to each other.
confusing haha. not quite sure what he meant. i cant source stutzman chicken manure anywhere near me so i am going to use EB stone chicken manure

Buy the bigger bags you won't be sorry later having them. Worse case you decide you don't want them, send them to me.

If you look around your area you can find premixed soil in bulk cheap, then amend it. Make sure the compost isn't from a municipal source. Case in point in my area I can get premixed sandy loam, screened dairy compost and rich leaf compost mixed at $34 per yard. Perlite is expensive but pumice is cheap at $38 per yard. I just found Earth Worm Castings for $10 per yard. Chicken Shit is free if you stop anywhere that has eggs for sale in the Country. Volumes like that you will want the larger bags of amendments. Use it on your garden or flower beds. Build this mix, use what you want and bag up enough for your next run or two. Give the rest to your neighbor, that Older lady with the roses will love you for it.

900$ for two yards of EWC in the applegate valley* williams...
crazy prices down here. .
we have the same castings available for half the price..

further north you go the cheaper they get..

we've tested black gold and its base saturation of Ca is 53% and K is @ 15%.. no trace elements to speak of. Less than 1ppm of B and 3.52% Na ...

waiting for more tests to give a good average...

what is peoples ideal soil depth?
looks like 18 inches is the preferred; but it seems like width is far more beneficial than depth.
would it be in my best interest to lower depth to 12 inches and add the soil for another foot of width?

if i was doing clones i would go for the 12 inches but i am popping seeds and worried taproot will want more depth . maybe just test some of both..

Here is an example of a root system. I can't remember where I found it.
