I am going to be flooding my black boxes with dry outside air at all times when covered. I am going to create a light proof intake and passive exhaust for humid air.

The only reason I can see for leaving your plants covered at night is that you can clip the weaker light from the beginning and ending of the day. But if you just pull earlier in the evening, you can uncover when it's full dark and just let the dawn come naturally. You'd still have to do two pulls a day, but closer together. And no worries about getting up early, or your poor plants getting all humidified with the tarp on all night. Am I missing something?

What you say makes sense. My main concern is humidity under the tarp.

I have been working on the assumption that to induce flowering and avoid confusion for the plants, a period of 12 hours of absolute dark is required... at least until the plants are well into flowering and there is no turning back.

I am thinking that keeping things as they are in terms of the hours covered, but replacing the tarps with 60% or 80% shade cloth after 10 PM.

My concern here is that things like the moon or a light from a neighbor's window will cause the same kinds of problems as light leaks in an indoor scenario.

I am going to be running a couple more boxes this year. perhaps I will designate one of them to be more experimental with.

I ran my tarp in the evening and took it off before bed last year. I'm going to do the same thing this year it worked great. I stopped pulling tarp I think July 21 or something

So... are we saying that perfect, absolute darkness for 12 hours is not as mission critical as it is when growing inside?

well the plants are used to the million billion watt sun so moonlight and the random flashlight stroll dont affect the plants. its not like youre going from 1000 watts to moonlight. its that disparity between light intensity i was told that doesnt freak out your plants. go figure though because by that same standard supplemental lighting shouldnt work. i know a guy who uses 3 white outdoor christmas tree lights per plant (unplugging the lights in between plants on the strand)for supp lighting and there cant be much of a difference between full moon light and that.

It is,the moon and stars are a more similar light spectrum to a green light.

right on. sounds good to me. but will a 6pm-10pm pull create heat issues in the place of my humidity issues?

By 6pm at least the day will be cooling off. Do you have fans under there?
Sounds like the best option to me. Unless you want to cover an hour later and or get up ass early in the am to uncover it.

i dont know how mobile your bb set up is, but maybe you could put it somewhere on your property that gets shade late in the day. that would stop the direct sunlight on tarp effect.

My understanding is it comes down to foot candles and even the brightest full moon does not provide enough foot candles to interrupt flowering.

Thats a good Idea. I think I did to black box runs last year, and I was having lots of moisture build up . The buds would get soaked if they touched the tent

i dont understand the point of doing it this way if u have others pulling it for u.......its not an advantage at all and is promoting stress......u still have to pull it twice a day........and with the light cycle increasing everyday its just gonna weird out the plants......not saying it cant be done........just suggesting it can be done better.......ventilation is key and can easily be taken care of......dont understand why more ppl dont take care of that........some funny opinions on here lately.......

TG: you did the evening-bedtime routine from the start?

Yeah I did. I also did the Bomb Threat which is what I'm doing again this year. It is a 100% indy , I'm not sure if that has anything to do with it either but I flower my stuff at 13/11.. So if the sun is coming up at 6 I will cover at 7 and uncover at 10 and then let them ride.

I'm thinking all canvas is breathable and if you really wanted to you could dye some thick cotton duck black and use that. That's what I'm going to try and see how it goes..

try comb - got any pictures of your awesome ventilated light dep? i'd love to see how to do it "right"

Is any one already pulling tarp? One of my neighbors is killing it. I'm starting in 9 days!

We dep our plants in large hoop rows starting between July 15 and August 1st in order to let all strains run their due course before the mid to late October weather sets in.

I guess i came off kinda strong in my response to that guy and im sorry for that. ive been where that guy is. reading through every thread i could, seeing something mentioned and then researching that. that research leads me to a new ingredient, open new tab research that. 20 new tabs later enter overwhelming sensation of feeling lost. growing is supposed to be simple, i put a plant in the ground and water it. but now i have to know the importance of cation exchange and soil porosity and npk values and brix levels and oh shit what if horse manure makes my bud taste different?

I've had friends in Lake County that have used their horse manure in holes as well as seeped it in water to create a tea or lechate of a sort. their plants were vegging at an insane rate. their flower production was good, but the taste of their herb left something to be desired. i can't say it tasted like horse shit because i've never tasted horse shit, but myself and others that know them can agree that the taste of their herb was far from top notch. i can infer that since every other aspect of the bud was there; look, smell, trich production, as well as the fact that they flushed adequately, that the horse shit had ill effects on the flavor.

I will tell you my brother that I was posing the question of "do you think horse manure effects taste" as a way to open up the debate as opposed to injecting my opinion as the end all, but without a doubt it does in fact have a negative effect on taste. please sir do not conclude that i have multiple tabs open....the tabs i have open are none other than my memory of the last few years growing on my own property in the sierra foothills. I am blessed to have an awesome piece of land and an excellent crew. we like to brew compost teas, plant cover crops, grow premium organic ganja, skate our mini-ramp, shoot pool, and enjoy a good life. remember that there are valid opinions from folks that only chime in from time to time and I think you might benefit from lending an ear to any and all that seem to make a coherent case. respect.

well if you knew the answer to the question then it should have been worded more like: has anyone else noticed that herb grown with horse manure has a bad flavor/taste?

your original post just made me think of these random guys who think watering with coolaid or whatever will make theyre herb take on a grape or cherry flavor. plus i was high and had an early court date to look forward to.

now i agree that different styles of growing the same plant can make a slight to drastic difference in taste/appearance/aroma/trich production etc. my outdoor og vs indoor looked like different plants altogether, same exact aroma though.

certain ferts possibly affecting your bud in a poor manner is a legit question. im pretty sure it would be common knowledge if horse manure actually fouled buds/vegetables/whatever. as far as i know horse manure isnt a hot manure like chicken and unless youre getting it from a race horse stable arent likely to be passng on nasty chems. maybe the horse they got it from was grazing on some foul shit? something that would pass on some kind of bad chem that couldnt be flushed?

u want to see a pic of a trench that ducting is buried into the ground hooked to an inline fan? i never said i had an awesome ventilated light dep, so why are you?

dont get upset because i see flaw in the way u do it.......adding unnecessary quotations and putting words out that i didn't say just makes u look silly.
