I thought about the same thing.... difficult to manage with harvest times being approximately the same. However-
Say you have a 28 day window for harvest- Last year I harvested from early/mid october to the latest in mid November.
Charge $1500.00 per day for rental, you could potentially double your cash in a season, and purchase another for next year.
Even if you only rented it out for 10 days, it has already payed for itself, and has presumably helped you with you harvest as well.
To me 1500.00/ day would be well worth it to turn a weeks worth of work into a day's . (and if you are getting one, sign me up for around Oct 23- LOL)

only way it could work like that is if the machine had a dedicated truck and crew who knows how to use it... so that a 40lb day can be achieved wherever the machine goes.

40x200=8000. I would say the service is worth closer to $2500/with operators. But then you'd have people blaming you when their yield doesn;t live up to their pipe dreams and shit like that. as a business, you can have it. too much hassle for me.

Yeah that was one of my concerns, having never used one, if I am able to rent one, There has to be a learning curve. If I have the machine for 1 day and spend half that day setting up, figuring out how work it and make the whole operation flow, it probably would not be worth the rental price. Speaking of which, I got nothing but answering machines at the two Bay area "rental" possibilities. I will continue to try and find out what I can about that.

Hey Nomaad, in your opinion what would be the approximate lb. amount at which you would make the decision to go to machine trimming? (assuming you didn't own one already).

hlocal.....no question to me that your growing skills are top notch......those buds look like average fall work to me though...indeed they are not........as the trimmer is doing a disservice to the appearance.....aside from the fact that the buds all look alike......that can be common in hand trimmed buds just as well imo......do you have any you hand trim for yourself......im sure they look phenomenal. just my thoughts.......as ive said before, i think you are an excellent grower. :tiphat:

A twister costs as much as about 70 pounds of hand trimming. So... that is a place to start making your calculations from.

also, as ive said before if i were dealing with hundreds of pounds i think id look at it differently....just might be a difficult transition mentally.....i have trimmed all my weed by hand for the last 11 years......hopefully next year i have the problem of needing to switch to a trimming machine.

trycomb, The Twister is designed for handling large scale projects. However, many mom and pop growers who are sick of hiring outside help make use of it as well. We also carry a wide range of others trimmers for the smaller scale grower. As another option we have started a Twister rental program. Many farmers like to rent the Twister for a day before making their purchase or they just use it to bang out a project quickly. :tiphat:

Howdy all you lovers of the big gals! Entering stretch here at the Rancho. Been hitting things with a transition top-dress (ingredients in photo), all is going well.

Best wishes to all!

Rootwise - do you use seabird guano in flower? I know some claim it enhances flavors.

I'm considering getting a twister and renting it out. $1000/day computes just fine. I'd also sell racks and my personal services. Indoor folks use them too. I'd probably need to buy a pressure washer as well...and charge an additional fee to clean it. As the price drops more and more I don't see the pay for hand trimming dropping with it so they will almost become a necessity as that 200/# becomes a bigger and bigger percentage of your net.

Hi guys,
This is an amazing thread and I'm in awe each time I look at it.

Although my plants don't look nearly as big as yours, these are the nicest plants I have grown so far to date.
I grow for one patient only here in Canada (doing outdoor only this year)and have recently discovered a problem on some of them.

I've only recently discovered that my first flowering plant seems to be showing signs of caterpillars or some kind of gnat infestation. I'm not sure which it is and i have looked up the remedy and it says to use Bacillus thuringiensis and Bacillus species.

Its says caterpillars, larvae and maggots all eat Bt bacteria, which can be applied as a spray, dust or granules. Injest liquid into stalks to kill borers. Shortly after they digest it their appetite is ruined and they stop eating.
Within a few days they shivel up and die. Cabbage loopers. cabbageworms, corn earworms, cutworms, gypsy moth larvae and hornworms are controlled .

The one it is affecting the most is the one that started flowering first. Its bud sites look like they have started getting bud rot on the inside sites and they are covered in little tiny holes but i do not see any caterpillars.

How do you identify what pests you have and what is the best approach to handle this type of problem?
If Bt is needed how do i know which type to use? There are so many different types.
Is there a general treatment for this ?
I've never done this type of thing before.

Most of my plants are 5 to 6 feet tall and I really cannot afford to lose any of these girls.
These potential meds have to last my patient until the end of my next years harvest which can be a long time.

Another one of my plants had one branch start wilting so I
am starting to get extremely concerned and yet there appear to be no signs of any problems on this one. Its Lavender.
It says fungas gnats can cause root problems including root rot.

Is there a generalized product I can use on my plants ?

It says Bt is non toxic to animals and humans but some people develop an allergic reaction to it.

I wish my camera hadn't stopped working or I would share some pics .
I'm going to try and get a new camera so I can take some pics to show.

I'm getting a bit worried since I just cannot lose these girls.
My patient and I will be so disappointed.

I've been spraying them every 2 weeks with Einsteins Neem Oil and they seemed healthy as ever until recently.

Do you guys do a check under a scope each and every week to keep on top of these types of things.

This really took me by surprise.
Thanks for any help offered.:thank you:

I hate bugs

Also I am wondering what the best but cheapest way is to cover these plants.

I am debating whether to build a hoop house made of pvs and covered with either 5 or 6 mil plastic or get a portable garage type frame for now.

I've read that plastic can cause mold and mildew quickly and with the cold damp nights and warm indian summer that comes at the end of the season, I am somewhat confused as to which is best.
One guy here uses mesh screening for air circulation but I live in a 4b growing zone so have different concerns.

Can any of you that have had some experience with this add anything to help out? There is so much info out there that it can be confusing. I've never done a greenhouse type grow before so this is all new to me and I've had some serious damage at the end of previous years, like bud rot.

Sorry for all the questions but isn't that how we learn?:tiphat:
