T5 Northern Lights Project

Maybe its the strain your growing.

On your hood do you have air vents on top of it so the heat has a place to escape instead of going down toward the plants? I have several vents on my hood and slits on the side that allow it to breath and be able to get my lights very close to my plants without harming them.

Good thoughts. First thing is I took a look at the hood. It does have venting all over. The strain might be a good point as I learned the hard way with Jedi Warrior. That thing was impossible to grow. The other T5s seem to be able to get them down on this strain but who knows. I really think it has something to do with the bulbs. The guy said they were hot off the press and were great tubes. Here why I think that:

Today was another thrilling day of heat. It was 110 out and bone dry. I had to open up everything and put every fan in the place on to get the heat out and keep the air moving. I rigged swap cooling and used cold water in the humidifer. That closet was at least 102 at one point. But enough fans and tricks I was able to keep it done to about 95. When the sun drops, I slam everything shut and capture the heat. Extreme changes here. But my point is that through all that, they look fine today. None of the leaves are curling, no one is droopy, color is good, pushing upward and spreading out more. So you would think if it was simply heat, all those leaves would be curling.

I need to email that guy and ask him about it. He invented the system in Holland and now has some stores in California.

Side Note: Grow lights still an issue. First guy had 3700 t5 and wanted 20 a piece. That is 160 bones. Doing internet searches I can find better prices and may give up and try that. Would like to get them in one piece.

AGAIN if today had been under HPS, my Northern Lights would be Southern Toast. Mine is hot but it is still many times cooler than HPS.

The homebrew project for incorporating my T5s into an HPS for winter system is interesting. Might get the best of both worlds....

No funky leaf curl

It was plenty hot yet no leaf curl. See why I think about the tubes.

$20.00 a tube that ridiculous, I paid $12.95 at a hydroponics store. You can get them much cheaper than $20.00 a bulb.

your plants look nice and healthy all the way through!:)
i'm thinking about t5's/t8's (racks of 6 bulbs, 54w each i believe for the t5ho's) to use for my vegging/cloning for my outdoor season next year so its good to see they perform well. I'm interested to see what the penetration is like for you once your plants get bigger. will you me training down/scrogging individually?

Note on Day 30. Heat getting hard to beat although suggestion of using frozen water bottles has added both humidty and lowering the temp which is what I need.
I noticed white dots on some leaves. What in the world is this. Turns out one of the fans was blowing little chunks of junk. But did discover leap hoppers had snuck in so I blasted then with some oil and got em. Still 1/2 per day or better. This strain is pretty.
I got a clone 8 weeks ago which is somewhere else and it is just about done. Not a huge yeild but mostly tight stuff without a ton of leaf. Seem to be swelling out now and I like how the bud looks. The blue dream is great but it is one that has a ton of little fan leaves in the bud (my last attempt). So I am looking forward to this batch. Growing on

Coming to the end of the month. They are surviving a bad heat spell and grow 1/2 per day some days.

Have improved the humidity so they at least are exposed to periods of 50% humidity. Lights up and 16 inches.

Have had a setback in getting the bulbs. I know where to get a better price, I just have to be able to get there. A friend said he will loan me his in about a week if need be.

T5 actinics
The rookie has not heard of this but I found them and read about them. Only thing is I could not find the color spectrum. But I will read on. They look like they cost $25 at the two places I looked.

And I was inspired by kurly's pictures and feel comfortable letting them veg a bit longer. No way I can get the bulbs now because I am down again with medical probs so I have got to let them veg more. So 45 day veg I think at this point. Am I asking for trouble??

Only worry is the 3 gallon bag. Maybe should have gone one size higher.

Thanks for all the help.

I am using the FF Ocean Potting. I have not feed them since I transplanted into it. The bag says 30 days and they have looked great with just water. Now I am past that, do I wait until I see something asking for help or should I just start giving it the nuets once a week??

This is what I use for nuets. I just followed the schedule last time but that was in coco soil. Any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks for the info. The color chart says it all. Wow that covers a huge spectrum. Now I will be doing some reading. Purple, got to get out my biology book. Great stuff for us T5s.

Plants continue to do well. Fighting off the heat successfully. Have decided to give a feeding of nuets. No signs of pests, no spots or holes. Have not had to move the light and they are about 15 inches more or less.

Had a chance to find a hydro shop. The guy said he did have some bulbs but $18 a piece. He said because he is way out of the way, his prices are higher. He had FF potting for $13 a bag and said that if I wanted to go with the bulbs he would get them although he said the shops in the city would have them for like $12 a bulb. He did offer to show me his showroom of bulbs and I learned lots. He said the he had some ideas if I wanted to leave the Tek light and T -5s and then had in these new red spectrum bulbs that he could show me how to homebrew into it. Decided to wait a couple of days as I have to go to the city for medical stuff anyway so a couple more days of veg wont hurt.

Here are the girls

T5 Grower your plants are looking really good. They are so green and lush with foilage. So its time for nutes huh? Im also glad to see they are doing real well with the heat issue. Will keep watching, Keep it up!

Yes I did a 50% diluted feed. The FF bag says 30 days before starting and they look good so I thought it best not to try and get aggressive. Hopefully when the heat settles down ( not soon ) I can get back to the water every 3d day routine (checking with the meter of course). It says on the nuets that once a week would be good. I am going by the color of the plant at this point. Thanks D Rock.

Well I did find one. $29 a tube is too rich for my blood. The other thing is the guy there said is veg is great but bloom?? He was not sold on it. The other thing on the advanced bulb is the PAR and kalven rating. But that chart shows it covering the whole spectrum like a big hump.Anyway I will keep looking as they do sound worth trying next time. Thanks Simba.

So I have one more trip to make for a UC major deal and after I get done with that, I can check some shops on the way back. Either way those girls are going to be going into flower mode at 45 days, which is coming fast. So this next time down I will be coming back with something. Red flares if nothing else

Thanks for all the support. It really is a kick in the pants seeing the seeing of green at the moment. I will be sad when it comes to culling the males. I am guessing 50 / 50 unless the females grow as aggressively as the males. We will see.

On a side note, my seeds came in the mail no problem. And a surprise pack of skunk#1 x afgan death. Sensi has nice packaging. Nirvana package reminds me of the corner store with the seed rack out front (and that was a very pleasant memory, thanks). I cant wait to try sprouting. Actually I can, I have enough on my hands!!
