Day 24 Northern Light Project

Day 24 Northern Light Project

Ok The plants are all close to 6 inches. The light is 18" above. The high temp under lights is 91. The high humidity is 50%. The average temp is 89 and average humidity is 33%. The moisture meter says plants are all moist so probably tomorrow.

No pests found. Tried shutting off the exhaust fan for an hour and the humidity went right up with a slight raise in temperature. I may try the hour on, hour off thing unless someone says no.

Here are the pictures

Day 25. A thinking day

Day 25. A thinking day

Today is Day 25. I have got to say the ones that we did harvest from the first go around are not bad. But those were actually under a number of different light combos, not a true t5 all the way. I have posted a couple of pictures in the dried and cured buds section. I made so many mistakes. Things I picked up from the board today that I will try: Harvest, hang to branches snap, first manicure and into brown bags for 2 weeks, final manicure and jar cure out. I like jar cure but I go straight from hanging to jar and have to open those guys everyday. A buddy forgot to open his a couple of days and mold had set in. But I can never get the sweet fragrance that the pros get. Getting closer!

Blue and Red spectrum combo. Might try this as a comparison to going all red at once. Have to read some more.

Last thing I might do is take some from the T5 project and shift them over to either outdoor or HPS. Another experiment but a buddy is willing to loan me a HPS. Trick is the weather. HPS normally would be way too hot in this climate but if the temps drop later, it might be feasable. If the summer keeps rolling, might use outside. Big concern there is bugs and rip offs. And the only reason would again be to see the differences. Science.

Try to get into watering every three days. You check with a meter on the third day. But until the roots get going, I should probably keep the soil probe within 5 inches of the top right?? Even though the bottom is moist the roots might not be able to get it. Or would that encourage them to grow down?? Well I think I will give them just a wetting as the top third is low moist on the meter. Humidity best is between 30 and 50% with the buckets and vaporizor going. Shut down the ventalation two hours early yesterday and the humidity was up to 50% at 90 degrees. I probably will do that hour on, hour off. The Tek lights are cool but they will still heat up a closet.

I appreciate all these posts. Tons of information backed up by pictures, who could ask for more. Maybe Northern Lights will be a victory crop.

I gotta say very good job bro, and wife ;). T-5 is gonna be fun and easy to flower with, plus it looks like your using coco and soil and that's gonna be a great mix for a t-5 light. The soil would probably stay to wet under a T-5 so coco dries quicker making the roots breathe easier. Looks like you tried transplanting with some pots only coco, some only soili, and some mixed? This will be fun, expect some decent yields from NL especially since your using coco which almost acts like hydro. Good luck dude!

The plants look good. They are between 6 and 7 inches tall. Temps between 85 and 90 lately. Humidity 20 to 50%. Height 18". Comparing to other grows, I seem to be a little behind. Going to drop the light down to 12" and see what happens.

I do not want to start flowering stage yet. They are just not big enough with 3 to 4 sets. Or maybe they are and I just am not ready. I found the bulbs but have not been able to travel there to get them. 8 red spectrum t-5. So they remain 18 hours in veg state. We shall see if moving the light closer might pick up the growth.

Looks great! Keep it up and you are going to have some fine smoke my friend. I dont think that they are ready for flower yet, but hey what do I know. some people flower sooner than what stage you are at now and have no problems. I am like you though as I wanted more growth on my plants before I start flowering.

Quick note. Lowered the light today. Temp seemed reasonable around 87 plant top. But came back in a few hours and a few did not like it at all. The leaves curled inward kinda of a cupping motion. So I pushed back to 16" A made sure the humidity came up. Wonder why I cant get the lights as low as the others. The guy who invented the light told me that the bulbs made the difference and hang it higher. Wish I had a light meter now.

Day 28 Northern Lights Project

Day 28 Northern Lights Project

Day 28 and plants are looking good again. They like the light up at least 14 inches. Found a couple of suspect spots on one leaf but no critters. Still no ready to flower I think. A few spiders caught in the stickem traps so they still find a way to get in. Tall is 8 (male no doubt) smallest is just under 7. Staying pretty uniform. Rotating plants slightly and changing fan angles every few days.

I am dog tired this morning but the girls are doing well! Day 28. Plants are between 9 and 7 inches. Nothing found on inspection. Average temp is 89 and average humidity is 37%. Height of light about 14 to 16 inches. Signs of spiders in the traps but not many. Still not committed to flower yet and am going today on a ride hopefully to get red spectrum t-5s. Hope the guy still has them.
Here are the girls today:

Your gurls are looking great T5 grower. Like how you have your temp meter proped up there. When do you think you will start flowering?

Thanks everyone. Guy was closed by time I got there so no red bulbs. Try again maybe tomorrow if I can. But I actually might wait 5 more days and see if I can get a couple more leaf sets going.

The reason why T5 is good. Today it is over 100 outside, anything else but T5 in there and plants would be toast. It is hot but nothing like a HPS unit.

YAY!! Another T-5 grower
I am trying my first T-5 grow as well.
I am on a 4 x 4 flood table, 25 plants in 5.5" net pots, 9 54w T-5 lamps. All 64K. I keep them only about 4 inches above the plants and have no heat damage.

As far as the question regarding using the 64K lamps vs the 30K lamps for flowering, I was told by the sales rep that sells them wholesale that there was very little improvement on a test garden that did a comparison. Of course YMMV. But for now, my finances dictate no new bulbs for this grow.

The plants were 3 week old clones (a mix of Kush, m-39, flo, and chronic) when they were switched to 12/12. It is now day 27 and they have done amazingly well, better I think than when I used a 600 w hps on the same table. My estimate based on past experience is that these plants should give up at least 20 gm each since they are already well budded and have between 18 and 30 days left to go. The chronics especially will be huge by slaughter day.

I know I should post some pix, and I will as soon as I replace my stolen camera (another long sad tale).

Day 29 The light is too close

Day 29 The light is too close

I love my Tek Light but everyone seems to be able to get closer to the plants. I can't. The plants grow great at the height it is at, about 15 inches away but I keep thinking I can do better so I put it down. Even with a huge exhaust fan, several box fans, humidier running, they do not like that light closer that a foot and will start to complain quickly. I back off the lights, get the room really humid and the leaves settle back down. Might be my hood design as I am running same HO T5 54 watt bulbs 6500K. Or just my luck. Anyway it works fine backed away so I am leaving it at that. 1/2 inch a day average aint bad.

Maybe its the strain your growing.

On your hood do you have air vents on top of it so the heat has a place to escape instead of going down toward the plants? I have several vents on my hood and slits on the side that allow it to breath and be able to get my lights very close to my plants without harming them.
