ya Ive been thinking of going back to basics anyway, just bone and blood meal. Jamaican guano makes some damn fine crystals though.. just so expensive and apparently not environmently friendly

Damn maybe I should mind my own business here but I seriously can't believe you guys are arguing about this one lol... There are a few reasons ppl may not choose a true organic garden and preparing a compost soil one year prior is one of them for a true organic grow. The other might be the cost and the other might be that bringing an organic grow indoor can be difficult. When ppl go to the store and they are buying product for the most part they will spend less and this means none organic products. I'm sure most ppl would prefer the better product if they could afford it.This is really not worth fighting about peace out Headband707

I think you are suffering from the grocery store consumer mentality that organic foods should cost more for whatever reason. In truth though it can cost next to nothing to grow organic because we are surrounded by life and it all dies eventually and must decompose and become food for another organism. Some of us are hippies and can't afford commercial products. I think anyone can compost, even people living in their mom's basement. I like to think of it like recycling garbage into gold.

Hahaha I Used to live in the basement.

I haven't spent more than $200 so far, including lights and cab.

Edit: maybe like $250-300, I forgot about seeds and some other stuff. Allot of what I bought I use for my other garden also.

It's best if you don't use it, most of the people who harvest it are exploited, most of the harvesting is unsustainable, and there are plenty of other less expensive sources which won't be disturbing animals in their nesting places.

Are any of you guano users mixing your guano directly with the soil and just using plain water instead of making teas? I hear indonesian guano has similar NPK values to jamaican guano.

Has anyone confirmed that it is environmentally insensitive to use sea bird or indo guano too? I haven't had the chance to use guano extensively, and was looking forward to it.

Yes seabird guano is used by certain penguins that make their nests out of the shart. If you still have some, and I don't blame you since they sell all that shit hella bad here, then top dress it imo.I did, and then applied ACT, and my plant responded well..I did this a couple weeks before flowering time though. I did about a half cup's worth to a 5 gallon bucket. You can get the same results without bat sharts.

yep thats how i do it, mix with soil and just add water

i would do some research and see if you can find some enviro friendly guano out there, probably be from smaller suppliers. its is possible to find it, even bat guano, some smaller caves get so full of guano that the bats have to stop using it. in these cases harvesting it can actually restore the habitat.
if you cant find any that is ok then you should consider using an alternative.

It seems to me that the majority (not all) chem growers

Obviously to each his own. I don't find soil messy inside but that is because I mix it and transplant and do all those messy activities outside in my backyard. I find hydro more of a risk if something goes wrong I got 10 gallons (or more) of water loose in my house lol. If someting goes wrong with soil - wait nothing really goes wrong :p

organic gardening can be as cheap or expensive as you want it to be, as simple or as complex as you want it to be. as devastating to the environment or not. its user defined.

for example i used to buy guano's, meals, blood and bone, kelp, fresh soil, lime, etc.... i would end up paying quite a bit for all the supplies lowering my "overall yield" ( how much i spent vs how much i get in return) this way was also more labor intensive because of all the "schedules" for all the different ferts, requiring a few hours a day at times. quality was good no doubt.

when now i spend a few dollars(no more than 10) on an entire grow for a season( few lbs), i get more out of it because i spend less( practically free), i work only a few hours a month now, and the overall product is far better.

its up to anyone to figure out what they want. there's a millions ways to grow organic.

also if there's any more bitching in this thread i will close it.

I just installed a bat house in my backyard, any opinions on trying to harvest that guano? Would it be worth setting up a catch? I know we approached the subject earlier but I don't remember any definitive answer.
