STOP USING JAMAICAN BAT GUANO

I'm in veg right now outdoors. Have fed a few applications of compost tea, with weekly applications of fish hydrolysate/kelp. Plants start yellowing (N def) if they don't get enough fish.

Is this them asking for more Nitrogen specifically (I'm thinking this might mean that I have not brewed very effective teas or have not applied enough and they are relying solely on the fish for their food)?

Or is it just the microbes wanting more food in general so that the plant can uptake more Nitrogen?

I ask this because when flower begins, are they going to be wanting a similar amount of phosphorus that will have to be provided for differently? or just a similar amount of food for the microbes that will be provided by continuing with any type of microbial food source (fish)?

Thanks in advance for any answers they are of course greatly appreciated. Sorry if I have left anything out. Would be happy to explain in more detail if necessary.

Apparently Turkey is only just starting using their vast guano ressources.
Maybe there's ecofriendly alternatives available from them.

Sometimes plants yellow if there is uncomposted organic matter mixed into the soil. The microbes expend the N breaking down the carbon rather than providing the plant. Or it could be that there is not enough organic matter for the microbes until you apply the fish. Do you know what is in your soil? Also, how are you making your compost tea? from what?

There is nothing eco friendly about Turkey. Have you ever been there?

That's not what i said, Kumpel, and i agree with your generalization, i have been there once.
But still, when turkish guano get's big it stands to reason that there will be some ecofriendly possibilitys/ suppliers.

I work wth people from Turkey here in Germany. They are poor.........what happens t those types of peple in situations like this?........They are exploited for .......$$$$$$$

and is that ECO friendly??

No. The same as it is in other countries that use poor farmers, who make nothing to harvest the guanos. Is it safe for them?.....Of course not just as it is not safe for us to scoop it out of the box. Try standing in a cave filled with guano dust for 12 hours a day.

ECO friendly......Never. Safe to use...Never.

And it is harmful to the bats breeding seasons and to every ones health.

Kumpel lol I do not hear that much.

sprichst du Deutsch?

Besser als englisch! ;)

I must admit i'm not knowledgeable about guano harvesting ect.,
your assesment may very well be true.

Mein Deutsch ist nicht zu gut aber ich spreche ganz gut. ich muss mehr Deutsch schreiben!!!

I am glad that some of the Germans are becoming more active in the forums. Here in Germany we are lacking in organic sources. We have only 2 P guano sources.....GuanoKalong and Plagron. We can get N guano at several BauMarkts.

I am working on putting together some products and making a web site but that is in the future.

Are you German or Swiss? I am an American......obviously but I live in Germany with my German wife. And I like it here.

I do use guano but am getting away from it. It is just a matter of time to organize things........compost, EWC, propagating the correct plants......Nettles, Comfrey, etc. to illuminate the need for guanos.

Ich freue mich, Sie kennenzulernen

**** YEAH IT IS, and I didn't ask to be a mentor. moderation passed the recommendation to admin, and gypsy approved. if you have a problem with that retarded badge they gave me, take it up with Gypsy.

Microbeman: you back shit up about as good as I do. we both share the same passion, just different outlooks, and agree you are very knowledgeable about organics & organic chemistry.

I would appreciate it if we continued to talk guano, or we all shut the **** up. :thank you:

No more bad language. I have edited it out this time. We have civil discussions here. I would like to believe that we are all intelligent enough to discuss a subject with out the childish language.

toohighmf and Headband707 I have edited several of your posts.

I do not want to see a repeat. OK????

I just installed a bat house in my backyard, any opinions on trying to harvest that guano? Would it be worth setting up a catch? I know we approached the subject earlier but I don't remember any definitive answer.

There is one definitive answer...wear a mask bro. Not a painter's mask either, a SARS preventing end of the world type mask...That's if you really want to have bat poo in your yard, maybe put the bat house somewhere nearby? I just think it would be very unsanitary at the least, and dangerous at worst. Just my opinion though, I think bats are cool, and It might be fun to burn one and watchem fly around your yard..

that is sick.....like hanging two cats on the cloths line with their tails tied together. Or cutting the chickens head off just to see it run around with no head.

Thanks for answering Tim.

The Tea when applied was:

2.5gal spring water
3/4cup homemade worm castings
1teasp Alfalfa Meal
1teasp Fish Hydrolysate
1teasp Kelp Extract

Brewed for 20hrs and I have enough oxygen/bubbling according to your recommendation in another thread, but just using three aquarium pumps.

The last time I applied this about a month ago they were actually worse than usual the next visit. I assume because they normally get 4.5gal of fish mix(1/8cup per gal) and this time they got only 2.5gal of fish and 2.5gal of tea. They really want the fish or they're not happy..

The Soil they are in I bought from a local landscaping supply place in bulk and then mixed, approx 40% "Gromax" potting soil, 40% Mushroom Compost, 20% Perlite.

Thanks again I appreciate you taking the time to answer my questions.

Yes, VG posted up a brand and a link to sustainable, CO friendly guano.....Caveman brand.

If they harvest it the same then there should be minimal impact on the eco system and the bats.

We just need to hope that the ones harvesting it are treated and paid fairly.

There's a whole subculture of bat-friends, they're installing bathouses, design them, retrofit caves and old warehouses and bunkers and stuff...they even install them on their own houses, no health problems apparently. I guess it's only dangerous when you harvest the stuff by the ton.

I want a big bathouse one day, in my big, fat edible organic garden.

The dust from the guano in the box is a health hazard. I use a mask I use for Lack when I paint. It has an A rating to toxic fumes.

On a good note about bats......they love to eat insects.
