Hey Sticky, it looks like you're off to a pretty good start.
I would get some Promix potting soil that is very safe for seedlings. Promix is mostly compost that is pH balanced with no added fertilizer. Don't transplant using that Miracle Grow soil. It is highly fertilized and will burn your tender seedlings.
My soil mix is 2 parts Promix, 1 part Perlite and 1 part Vermiculite. Most of the potting soils have some Perlite in them but it's not enough for good drainage.
Vermiculite holds water. 3 parts Potting soil + 1 part Perlite is a good mixture as well.
Yes I too was inspired by Kevvie as I remember, back in the OG days, I built one back then and after I moved I decided to do another.
I taped a turkey pan I cut up for reflectivity, I been planning to get an emergency blanket, but I never remember.
transplanted them on day 5 and now they are living in the tub. few pics of new growth. the plants are less than an inch away from the lights w\ the box fan blowing twards the wall on high. the lid is not on but supported by some 1 x 4's and i cut a hole in the lid for more air to escape. it seems to get really hot in there so i need to fix it ASAP.
i really want to put a peice of plexiglass between the lights and the plants. where should i be able to pick up a peice of it. HD - LOWES? when i get the plastic i am going to go ahead and convert my other tub in to the light holder and just prop the plants up with some cardboard boxes close to the light window.
i also have a emergency blanket i will be adding either tonight or tomorrow. it is ok to have it in the light area? what is the best way to hold it up DUCT TAPE?
lil help wanted please.
ALSO i stared this thread... http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?p=597303#post597303 guess i am going to just use 2 fans on exhaust only. using a passive intake (think thats what they called it) suck air from the cab and lights into the closet. then when i start to get into flowering ill just build that DIY scrubber. will it work ok with the pc fan? i am looking at the 120 mm ones. YEAH OR NEAHHH?
Sorry I didn't look real closely at your growbox to see that you have temperature problems.
You need an exhaust fan to pull air through the box. I would suggest getting a Hamilton Beach Tru-Air air purifier from Wal-Mart for under $15 that comes with a filter cartridge. I change out the carbon in the filter for pennies with carbon from the petstore.
ladies and gentleman .... i went off the deep end today spent about half of my day perfecting my grow tubs. new intake and exhausts, separate light chamber and pc fans w\converter. fans are 120 mm - 12vdc
cfls seperated by plexiglass
cfls and the exhaust fan 120mm - 12vdc
cfls and the intake ports added 1 more hole like the large on in the middle right below it
lights on, fan spinin'
shot lookin into the grow area - exhaust- later to be hooked to a scrubber of some sort.
outside exhaust shot
heres the 19 volt powersupply for a laptop. Wired the fans in series and they are pulling 9.5 volts each
and last.... new cab sitting in its new home closet...
Woah! Now we're talkin!
Your cab is shaping up to look seriously nice Sticky! Beautiful lookin mico grow for sure. Those 120mm Thermaltake fans are pretty awesome... great power at 78 cfm and whisper quiet at 21 dBa. I had never thought of using a powersupply for a laptop to run PC fans, but thats a great idea too!
As far as your need for carbon filtration goes I'm on my 4th (and seemingly last) revision to my carbon filter design and I gotta say that the people who swear by the True Air filters know what they're talkin about
They've got really nice fan power (somewhere around 80 cfm or so I'm guessing) and the carbon filter pads they use are nice and thick. Lookin at your box I think you could fit one in there pretty easily. They're not exactly "whisper quiet" like your current fans probably are, but they do the job well.
Unfortunately with my PC case setup there was just no way I could fit a True Air filter in it without destroying the case. Believe me, I tried and I ended up destroying one of my cases and the damn thing still wouldn't fit... had to run out and quickly buy a new case to replace the old one.
So just for future reference here is my new design for a well working carbon filter in a tiny space...
First, get a decently powered PC fan (50 cfm or above). 120mm is always better, but if you can only fit a 80mm in your space then the design will work for those too. Of course you'll also need a 12v DC adapter to wire the fan to, but in Sticky's case this part isn't an issue because he already has a good power source.
Next go to Target and pick up a pack of the replacement filters for the Hamilton beach True Air carbon filters. They come in packs of 3 for about $10.
Finally, make a run to your local drug store (CVS, Walgreens, whatever) and pick up some sticky backed velco and a roll of heavy duty double sized adhesive strips.
If you take a look at the link to the fan filters, I think you can pretty much guess what we're going to do here. Just mount the filter on on the fan with the included screws. You also might want to take a pair of scissors or wire cutters and remove a bit of the grating over the fan filter just to help minimize restriction on the fan, but leave enough intact to hold the filter in place.
Now take one of those True Air carbon filter pads and simply cut it to the size of your fan filter. You will notice though that the True Air pads are much thicker than the filter pad that comes with the fan filter, so we'll need to make a few minor modifications to
make our new carbon filter fit properly. Basicly, at this point you can just take the outter case of the filter (the part holding the carbon pad) and tape it to the other section to hold it in place, or you can do the more complicated version I did that looks a little nicer and is easier to change the pads with.
Just cut 8 little triangles out of your double sized adhesive strips and stick them down on the 4 corners of the fan filter's mounting bracket and the 4 corners inside the outer part that holds the carbon pad. Now do the same thing with your sticky backed velco and stick these little triangles down ontop of the ahesive strip stuff. The adhesive strips will just serve to raise up the velco a bit and make it fit better. Now just cut off a tiny bit from each corner of your carbon pad to allow the velcro to show through and stick it on!
Voila! Instant mini PC fan carbon filter! Its more work than just duct taping in the True Air filter, and probably more expensive too. But when all my other carbon filter designs failed to control the raging oder from some Skunk #1, this one held up to the challenge.
And just incase that last part didn't make a bit of sense, heres a few pics of an 80mm fan hooked up with the filter so you can tell what I'm talkin about...
Heres a pic of the complete carbon filter in the box
Now one with the outer casing that holds the carbon pad removed
And finally, one of the True Air carbon filter pad and outer casing themselves
Once again, note that if you have the space to use it I would suggest the True Air filter over this PC fan version, but this version does work quite well and was far superior in function to any of my other 4 home made carbon filter designs. The carbon filter pad will restrict the airflow of your fan by aproximately 10 to 25 percent I'd say, but thats really not too bad considering how well it works.
I've only had the pad in for about a week now, so theres no telling how long it will go until needing to be changed. But it seems like the best option I've found for ultra-small space boxes. Just some food for thought.
You've used the basic concepts in my and some things of your own too!
I like the way that you used pop rivets to attach the fans. That's slick and easy.
Check your intake area for the light section. It needs to be around 25 sqin to get maximum airflow. Believe it or not it makes a big difference to have the intakes large enough.
ok the brain is all fired up today... i drew up some plans from my scrubber system!
HERE U GO FELLAS,LADY, and RED Details:
Going to get those flat inline carbon filters from the dePOT ( can some one post a link to it so i can see the size- i cant find it on there site...) Use the fan that i have sucking from the grow cab and install it onto the side of a large cardboard box. on the oppsite side i will connect a dryer vent and on the grow cab too - linking them together w\a dryer hose. tape the filters in the box like the diagram below shows, using the maximum sq. area for the air to pass thru. i believe that the more surface area u can pull thru at once the less harder the fan has to work. so that is why i am going to use 2 filters not one inline, but 2 in a "V" shape. finally i am going to cut the lid in to the same "V" shape sealing the intake side to the filters w\tape. from there i can just tape the lid together not worring if the filter and the top have a gap in it. seal the rest of the cracks with tape along with my fan and if everything goes accordingly we should be scrubbing!
seems that this design might be able to be reused- but might have to dissassemble to get the filters out to change at the end of each grow.
sence i am growing this one time. then dissassembling everything and moving about 1000 miles or so home seems the best answer for me. keep all the parts and just toss the smelly box and filters away. then for my 2nd-and so on grow (witch will be LARGER) i can build the custom activated carbon one and just change out the carbon. after i get setteled into my new house not a lame $ wasting appartment - away @ school.
Blocked the intake ports at the bottom and cut some new intake ports so that the cp fan would cause a cross draft on the plants no need for a IN BOX FAN (yet atleast- maybe never) i have the plants sitting on a carboard box right next to the "light window"
i know i have seen that carbon filter link at like 10 diffrent places POMH... but i cant find it. it has a picture of a dog on the wrapping and i think it comes in a 2 pack... for like 10$ i think. i also believe it has a black plastic shell. i'll look for the link again.....
UPDATED:http://www.webproducts.com/products/furnace_ac/absorber.jsp
from this post i found out that someone said it is a BAD IDEA... but he did say if i am pulling a small cfm across it witch i will be doing it might work. i am going to be pulling it across 2 of them so..... i dont know... if someone talks me out of it then i wont do it! ill just build my own scrubber. http://www.icmag.com/ic/showthread.php?t=33561&highlight=filter
Mr Micro, jam, sm0kateer4204, pomh, and red thanks for the on looking. and props!
in the worse case i only end up with one female what do u think i am looking at for yeild? i have to have my grow finished by the latest DEC 10th. it will give me 7 days of drying after that till i move. right now if i dont do any bending or tying down witch i believe is called (LSTing?) my guess is that it should be done by thanksgiving (75th day from start) says flowering time is 45-55 days. so if u do LSTing or what ever bending and tying it down is called so i get a larger SOG. how much longer does it add?
Measured my GROW AREA in the cab and i got 18" L x 12" W x 23" H
There is really no way to guess any type of yield at this point. My first grow, I got like 5 grams per plant or something like that. That is a part of growing that is very hard to estimate. Too many variables , especially when it is a first grow.
I think you are doing great so just go with it and have fun, once they start to flower and all your hard work is done then you can sit back and watch them bud.
Thats very true pieceofmyheart... my first grow was on my porch in a little vase and I was sure I was gonna get a huge yield... end up geting like 10 grams hehehehe
Sticky, just have as much fun as you can get with this grow and don't worry about the yield. Try to get you grow tube as good as it gets, like you're doing now, and your futere gorws are gonna get beter and better (with huge yields)
i dont want a massive plant but if i only end up with one female i might not have a choice. like i said earlier i cant go past the 10th of DEC and the projected end time now is thanksgiving. any thoughts?
2. every time u bend the plant... u get one extra head\area for a cola to develop?
