I don't heat my outdoor fish pond. I throw a bubbler in the water to leave a hole in the ice. The fish have been in there for years and do just fine. They go dormant (torpor), don't eat, don't swim, they are just there waiting for spring.

I probably might just ditch the heater altogether Right now it’s set at its minimum temperature of 60° that ought to help dial down The electrical draw considerably

Had to check it but indeed goldfish live just well in the 0-22 celsius range, didnt know this!

Goldfish can also grow very big google told me.

30 kg is the world record as far as I know… this is pretty mind blowing, but it’s been authenticated it’s true

There is no ice on my pond at the moment, but you get the idea. These fish have been in here for about fifteen years.

These goldfish outgrew me years ago. They were supposed to be feeder fish for when I first got the turtle so they’re at least five years old.

The pond always looks worn out and tired in the fall/winter months. I'll have to look around and see if I have any summer pictures of it. The waterfall and filters are turned off right now so the water gets green. Plants are dormant.

The dimesions are roughly 9 feet long, six feet wide, and 2 feet deep. It holds around 800 gallons.

Tabulating some of the wattage for example there’s an 800 W heater out for the goldfish 300 gallon stock tank that runs 24 seven that’s sucking some power & spinning the dials, I found that out yesterday … fish is co$ting electric …

Anything with a heating element uses lots of power. If you leave a regular drop coffee pot on all day it is probably pulling 800 to 1200 watts.

The more it’s heating, the more electricity it’s drawing, correct? It’s not struggling to maintain temperature when dial down..?

Most of my appliances are never on for very long except for the refrigerator. There’s something that I bet it’s expensive to run yearly.

These adjustable aquarium heaters have thermostats usually don’t have to go up to a 800 W model until you get a lot of gallons to take care of

It’s funny these are actually not real world problems. Temperatures are gonna drop drastically. not gonna battle it out there . bringing them in temporally throwing them in my downstairs tub. …

That's a beautiful pond. Koi are awesome, but I only stick with cheap fish. I spent five days last summer battling a Blue Heron in my yard. That bastard killed and ate about ten of my fish, he didn't make it to day six.

They blue herons fish daily in my 4 ponds. I have noticed last time I caught some bass and cleaned them they had yellow grub parasites. I believe snails, fish and herons are part of its life cycle.
