Something wicked this way comes

Snook

Still Learning
Thanks D9. Looks like I likely won't be able to get Tupur in Canada so I am looking at using the coco perlite mixed up.
Are there any other mediums that work other then Turface and Tupur?
I know they play base/softball in Canada, the local fertilizer distributor should and ask for and come up with the stuff they dry the infield and pitchers mound with after rain.. that's gotta be close.
OTOH D9 does/has/will use coco nd pearlite, sure he'll be by soon..

i root pruned my root bound plant by simply shaping the root ball into a smaller root ball (shaved off all sides). Did this around 9am this morning before lights out. Threw a SCROG net over it and tucked its tops back in the SCROG.

Came home at 4pm and there is new growth shooting out the tops already!! :headbange TBH, i am 80% sure its a male. Looks like it has male preflowers but since this is my first grow i will not condemn it until it shows sex in flower.

Since i will be flowering soon, i need to take clones for the first time.

D9, question!

What do you keep your mother plants in? I want to keep bonsai mothers for each of my phenos. I am thinking i can just leave them in your PPK Cloner but i wonder if it will get too big in it? Should i just use a regular small pot for a clone mother and hand water it?? Would a passive wick-fed mother clone be counter-intuitive (grow too fast and take up unnecessary space)?

use a good grade of coco and the large xlp perlite. you may have to experiment some to determine the right % for your choice of materials. i like the idea of using cheap, locally available materials whenever possible.

as of right now i don't have any mothers. just cloning off plants going to flower. i started with a bunch of local clones from folks but have been popping beans too and so i'm getting some that look like they might be keepers.

i think i'll dedicate some of my intermediate veg room space to bonsai moms. i have 42 sites there and could probably maintain about 20 strains if i kept them small.

just shamelessly proselytising the ppk with a few more gratuitous pics from the flower room.

in order: Ice, dire wolf, another dire wolf, apple kush, another ice close to harvest, tangie, lodi dodi, and el chapo.

couple question...what are the dimensions of each screen, are they 4 x 4? and what weight do you typically pull per individual screen/plant?

hey ...your skill sets are off the charts...this >>>

https://www.icmag.com/ic/attachment.php?attachmentid=411869&d=1494609375is

is just :woohoo:for lack of a better word...

thank you! on the frames, the conduit bars are 4'6" apart making for 20.5 sq ft screens.

on the weight question i don't know because this is my first real scrog and i have just harvested 5 lodi dodi's that are still drying.

i'm evolving technique as i go. the first 6-7 plants were trained under the screen pulling branch ends out. it yields ok from the looks of it but then i started letting the plant stretch up through the screen about a week before bending and tying the branches down. this is obviously producing a more even distribution of the flowers.

(1) stardawg corey x c99 #6 (Fertile Myrtle) on 4/14

(2,3,4) and today, 5/18, one day short of 5 wks from transplant, going to flower. 4' ruler.

(5) this is the first clone from myrtle showing full alternate phyllotaxy. this one will show us what she really is.

(6) almost straight down canopy shot of an apple kush so i can get a perspective on how full the screen is.

((7) side shot of same canopy.

(8) a lemon kush i just liked the looks of.

myrtle's sister Ivanka (not shown) was taller and lankier and went to flower 2 days ago.

Hey d9 haven't logged on in over a year. Just got a supply of turface close by (90 miles). Got it for $9.61 a bag. Finally getting away from 8822. Like the size of your new build and grow. Still enjoying what I have learned from you and can't thank you enough for sharing. I see you have upgraded again. Perlite mix ? Might try it out next time around. I know you don't make changes willy nilly. I have been running trouble free. Fixing to put in some new strains. I still feel this is the easiest and cheapest way to grow.

hey! good to hear from you! the perlite is used as a cutter to drive up air filled porosity. turface out of the bag has an afp of about 22%. by screening we got it up to about 35% but it was a lot of labor and didn't scale up well.

by using simply well washed turface and xlp grade perlite at about 50/50 by volume we get 38% afp, which the plants seem to love. everything in all the pics above is in that mix. big labor saver and the pots are not nearly so heavy.

i like the de's. they are much more efficient electrically than hps mogul socket bulbs. in these ac/de fixtures i get really good light all the way out to the screen edges.

next week i'll be able to test one of the 945 w cmh's.

Are you reusing the turface/perlite mixture for subsequent grows? If so, how are you cleaning it?

no, currently i'm not re-using it because it would cost more in labor than the material is worth.

but if you wanted to do it personally i would sieve it first through 3/8" screen to remove the larger roots.

then throw dry shovels full in a pool with running water to first separate the turface, which would sink, from the perlite and roots, which would go over the edge or could be scooped off the top.

then soak the remaining perlite in some kind of acid bath or run it through a "flame curtain" to get all the remaining fine roots out. and kill the bugs.

or you can pay 12 bucks for a new bag of turface and 14 bucks for a 4 cu ft bag of perlite and rinse it for a few minutes with the hose.

both substances out of the bag have just come from high temperature kilns and so are sterile.
