soil remineralization: process and discussion

Huh? You know that Basalt is a volcanic rock dust but you read that 'lava dust' is absorbed faster?

Huh?? Redux.....

I'm not even going to touch the absorbed - I believe that you meant to type adsorbed, right??

Absoportion vs adsorption is a difficult concept for many. I had a hard time understanding it when I was first getting into aquatics and trying to grasp how the adsorption properties of good activated carbon make it a form of chemical filtration.

Without understanding this very basic concept it is then impossible to discuss cation exchange leading the uninformed on their quest for some magical 'Calcium cure' or whatever the latest article at the stoner sites are blathering about.

Pretty funny stuff indeed - Dolomite Lime tea???

LMAO

Ive had some gaia green and azomite for a while...

mixing it in the soil seems to work.. top dressing always created a gooey lump ontop and can rot the stem if it touches it enough...

anyway almost stopped using the stuff then I decided to mix a 16 oz cup into a quart bottle... it mixes perfect, and no stink..stonemeal will stink though..

at a tbl per gallon the girls are lovin it and Im finally seeing results!

anyone else make a liquid from rockdust?

Cant say I have, but I had thought to do it though. I work will greensand, Limestone, gypsum, and phosphate powders-not super phosphate just regular. I mix into soil, and compost bin, and reuse, each time I use new soil, or worm poo it seems to have better results. I thought to mix it in water, but figure it was doing to much, plus it gets pricy getting all the powders.

Nice to hear it works, does it raise the ph tho? I am all organic, and I got ph all over the place, but at the plants speed, I have no more leaf issues since the powders, tho you can mix to much of one powder , and cause some lock outs, but since adding to worm bin, not anymore. I just the worm poo is better with all kinds of minerals available.

I had this mix bagged and is being sold through an organic co-op here:

200 lbs. Canadian Glacial Rock Dust (Gaia Green brand)
50 lbs. Bentonite
50 lbs. Basalt
50 lbs. Oyster Shell Powder/Flour (pure Calcium Carbonate)

Another 700 lbs. will be batched this week to resupply the store

CC

Why using pure Calcium Carbonate in the mix together with Basalt and Bentonite, especially when you use Calcium Bentonite? At the Seer Centre in Scotland they would not even recommend to use Basalt dust together with powders like Dolomite or Maerl.

Keep on the growing :)

May I suggest "Agrowinn Minerals" as an affordable alternative to Azomite--around $1 per pound.
http://www.fertilizeronline.com/rockdust.php

Yeah...it has only 57 elements and trace minerals (compared to Azomite's 70)...but when paired with sea mineral's 90 plus elements and trace minerals http://www.seaagri.com/docs/seawater.pdf...also at a buck per pound (Sea90 is what I use)....why pay more to get natural minerals?

So...anyone else using minerals from the land and sea?

Lately i use also sea salt from France (Bretagne) with 84% sodium chloride and 16% minerals and trace elements.See how it works together with rock dust.

Keep on growing :)

i got that its also called stonemeal about the same price but it gets stinky as a liquid

fertilize with just rockdust, possible?

I ordered my Sea-90 last week, looking forward to using it!

Sea-90...love this stuff! 5ml per gallon...at each and every watering and a must for all my teas (nutrient, mineral, compost & guano).

Funny...for 15 pounds of Sea-90, I paid $15 (buck a pound) plus $11 shipping. Well worth it...imho!

It is sold as table salt but it is unrefined and organic certified.Don't ask me why this salt is organic certified.

LOL I know right, stuff these days are so upside down, organic label but not organic, something from nature, not so unless we say so. Just like everything these days. Thanks I will look into this stuff, its cheap not so powerful it would screw stuff up, worth the try.

Indeed, we shall see. I intended to have a good garlic press on hand so I could start making Brix comparisons, but son of a bitch, no one sells the old style presses anymore!

Quick question on your use rates, you mention 5mls. That's a volumetric measure then, yes? Equivalent to a teaspoon. Instead of a weight measure, correct?
I'd rather not have to have a scale for weighing out fertilizers if I can help it, I still need my own shed for storing everything separately from the general household stuff.

Yep....Sea-90 is granulated/chunky medium and easy to measure via volumetric measure (label suggest 1 tea per gallon as well). I make 6 gallon batches so I add 30ml of Sea-90--I also compliment the brew with magnesium sulfate (Epsom Salt) using the same amount: 5ml per gallon.

BTW....the garlic press for Brix testing is a pain...I found if you select 3-5 nice healthy fan leaves and use a plastic card that is folded with the leaf material inside like a taco. Making sure stem ends are all together, I then squeeze the sap and dab it in directly on the refractometer. I found if you place the plastic taco on table edge and roll your pencil along the top--the sap will blob out nicely! Very little mess to clean up--just rinse the plastic card and refractometer under the faucet and you are good to go; no garlic press, no eye dropper, or vice grips to clean!...I like!

Cheers!

Thanks for that, Eclipse. I'm trying to imagine how well it would work, though. Any possibility of a demonstration video? I'm also going to be testing Brix in ALL my plants (veggies, etc). I mean, do you need good upper body strength? I can't start anything that's a pull start except our tiller, and it's always been that way--weak as hell up top.

If you avoid the promotional videos, blog screeds, sock-puppets, et al. there are a plethora of peer-reviewed studies available to read and evaluate online.

At least we're not talking about Morton's so that's a plus......
