surf and turf meal for my mother and partner tomorrow . simple quick menu for an elderly couple . cod marinated in masala and yoghurt , a small ribeye , some garden peas with mint lemon , chilli semi mushed like homemade mushy peas , and some new potatoes barboiled and roasted in garlic with skins on , and a slice of lemon for her fish , served with salad . no sauces or anything like that , just nice fresh ingredients

Do you read or watch anything from Charles Dowding?
I’m sure you have, thought I’d mention him though.
Great for inspiration too!

i spent a couple of years helping an elderly surgeon in his polytunnel around 15 years ago. we built and set it up , and he taught me how to grow and look after competition dhalias . i'm finally going to utilise that knowledge and grow a patch , and save the tubers , and clone them the way i was shown. grow the giant show stoppers. single heads, vaseline on the stems and protected in the polytunnel. should be dope

We’ve done dahlia’s every year for a while now. It’d been dry here for many years so we wouldn’t have to dig up the tubers.
Then we had a wet year and 3/4 of our tubers rotted in ground. Devastating as we’d built up an impressive collection.
I prefer the rosette ones personally.
The “cafe au lait” is a great one to do for its size alone.
Tree dahlia’s can spectacular too!
Look forward to seeing the patch mate.

the technique iw as shown even if in a hot climate is to propagate the cleaned dormant tuber in vermiculite , until shoots grow out the tuber. the selected winning tubers, and take clones , and grow those clones . i'm rusty but i spend two summers with dr g , watchinga nd helping. i remember everything during that time .

Sounds like he knows his onions😉haha

Nothing better than looking back and seeing how lucky we’ve been to be around certain masters of their craft, even if you didn’t know it at the time.

Sounds like a good variety! There is a certain way to prune grapes to optimize yield of fruit. It has to do with counting the budsites and doing a little math to come up with the number to leave remaining on the vine. My professors told us about it in my fruit and vegetable production class.

Search through these Purdue University publications, lots of valuable info there. Will have to search for that pruning guide for small fruits.

Love dahlia. I have grown it before from seed and put it in the garden for a year. I didn't even realize it was a perennial at the time. It was somewhat small. I saw pictures of dahlia my dental hygenist showed me. They were just so amazing. I didn't realize what dahlia could do.

Love the big flowers on those. Well worth the effort.

Thats great you had experience helping that fellow. You guys need to find an enthusiastic young man to help run things and pass on the torch.

Was great when I got a chance to work at the nursery. Learned a lot. The owner was a bit of a grump too, but the sons were running most of it. Being a grower is tough but it has great rewards. Best to listen to the Lord and let him be the boss. Have to pay attention, he catches you when you aren't. We get those cheap lessons and we have to stop and give thanks.

My friend on ICMAG, Mossy, was a grower in spain who grew up growing tomatoes. He said the way we do things is make all the mistakes first, then you are trained and know what to do. Sometimes it pays off to stop and think things through.

No farms no food.
