Red_Greenery's Handyman's DIY Grow Tub

Hi AMX. I took off my chrome plate too cause it hit one of the fans. You don't need the ground wire so cut it off if it's in the way. All of the lamps in your house use two wire cord, with no ground.

Hello Red,

First of all, hats off to the excellent design ! Im a first time grower, and your grow box design is definately one that fits my needs well !

I used the pictures you posted and your descriptions as the build blue print, I basicaly have the exact same setup, but instead of haveing the lighting fixture, I used 3 seperate sockets each with its seperate plugs. ( couldn't find the fixture at home depot )The only problem with this setup is the height of the sockets comming out of the top of the grow box, so I had to make some legs on the filter box so it sits on top.

The entire thing cost me about $97 including the black fusion paint, and 6 26W CFL lights. Everything purchased at the good ol wally world, except for the emergency blanket, which was obtained at target.

I have everything setup now, and I ran a 72H test on the setup, and it all worked perfectly. The setup has very little sound, and once the closet door was closed, you could barely hear anything unless you put our ears up aganist the door. Only problem was the heat shield, I initialy over looked it, and the inside temp at the bottom of the box was in the high 90's, after installing the acrylic piece, it dropped to a cool low 80's. ( acrylic piece from puzzle frame, $10 at wally world )

Since this is my first grow, I started everything form scratch, and it ended up costing me no more then $130 for everything, including the pots and some soil to get me started. I still need to get the carbon for the filter, and ferts later on, but for now, the setup will get me through vegetation w/o any problems I hope.

Im having problems with my digital camera, so I'll be posting pic of the setup once I get it working again. I'll also post up my first grow diary when the seeds pop through ! ( Currently germinating 3 Nirvana's Papaya and I have some Low Riders on the way. )

Im really looking forward to putting the grow box into full action ! ( Im curious as to how well the carbon filter will work when in full bloom)

Again, thanks for posting up this excellent design ! It's definately very easy to build, and all materials were eaisly obtained.

-K

Kubism - welcome to the Lodge. That's great that you've put it all together so easily and under budget too! I'd sure like to see some pics when you get your camera working.

The 72 hour burn in is an excellent idea. I was paranoid about the heat causing a fire so I ran my box with no fans for 8 hours. The box got warm but not hot and there was no smell of anything burning or getting overheated. I also have a smoke detector in the closet, just in case.

Thank vanillagorilla for salvaging some more of Nimby's old OG thread. These have details of his HPS hood and DWC details.

Nimby was very innovative. This was the first time that someone had stuck a 150HPS into a box this small.

Anyway, here is a starting point for anyone interested in doing HPS lighting and a good example of DWC.

Usuable Grow Height

Usuable Grow Height

One of the last (hopefully) questions on yor growbox:

From the top of the pot to the acrylic heat shield, how many inches of vertical grow space do you have?

You mention 26 inches, but the height of each rubber maid is about 16 inches, which gives a total of 32 inches. Once you factor in for the acrylic shield(32" less the space from the top of the rubbermade to the heat shield) and the unused space for the pot (from the floor of the bottom rubbermaid to the top of the pot), I assume you have about 20 inches, maximum.

Am I correct?

Again, I'm trying to get a better understanding of how much *usuable* vertical grow space you actually have.

I have spent the last 2 days designing and constructing my own box, using your specs so I can get 3+ ounces at harvest (I'll link my step-by-step once it's completed- here's a hint: DWC!)

Keep up the good work, Red!

Cool, another challenger takes up the gauntlet!!! Welcome to the Lodge dayoungn!!!

Hey Krusty - There's about 26" of growspace and the light section takes up about 6". This plant is about 21" tall and the buds are about 8".

You'll find the box starts to get small when you add a large DWC reservoir. Ambre's lights are mounted sideways. This can recover a couple of inches.

You might want to take a smaller tub, install the lightbar in it with an acrylic/glass sheild to make a hood and fit it into the bottom of the top tub. Hope this makes sense.

Hey Sticky, I checked out your grow and your seedlings look really good. It won't be long before you'll be needing the growbox! I don't care if you follow my design exactly, if you can improve something, do it and show us all! :)

Hi Stayhigh, Nimby had DWC dialed in for these small grows. Too bad his threads are gone. Pipedream makes a cheap tub using pails from the dollar store. I'd ask Sugabear for advice on nutes and such. He's dialed in pretty tight too.

Personally, I'd go with soil on my first grow. My soil mixture using 2 parts Promix, 1 part Perlite, 1 part Vermiculite is a soil-less hydroponic method of growing. If you use 1/2 strength nutes + 1/2 tsp epsom salts on every second watering and use plain water on every other watering, it's about that simple. MG is the first nutrient to get locked out with pH. If the plant shows deficiencies, just flush the soil and feed with the normal amount of mix and you're back on track.. I use Shultz 12-15-12 plant food that you can buy at the grocery store.

I don't want to discourage Hydro but it is definately more complex, especially on the first grow. You need a pH test kit or pen and a TDS meter. Hydro is an excercise in fiddling with pH adjustments and nutrient mixes. On these small grows, the yeild is about the same with either hydro or soil.

Oh, if you can't find Mylar, use emergency blanket. It's cheap and available at Wally World.

Don't worry about the 42w lights. I grew a ton with just 26 watters on my first 3 grows.

Okay, this is the absolute, final questions I have, Red:

How big are your screens used for your SCROG?
How were you able to get your hands under the screen to train the plants?
Did you take the plants/screens out of the tub and then train, or were you able to leave everything in the tub?

Oh man, once I get this last bit figured out, I'll get my step-by-step of its construction posted (with acknowledgement to Red_Greenery, of course!).

This is going to be fun!

anyone know where to find mylar on the street?
Hydroponics shops are best.

You can also try art-supply stores or arts and crafts stores.

Maybe laboratory (sp?) supply stores as well.

Barring that, you can always buy Mylar online.

That's great that you guys are finding boxes that you'd love to grow in. Show me your progress as you go along.

Krusty - wasn't that the last question, three questions ago? LOL

BigfatJ came up with this Super Simple SCROG method on OG and had a long running sticky thread.

These SCROG screens were built out of coat hangers, the top square is just a coat hanger spread square with the legs made from cut up coat hangers. It makes a scren just under 1 square foot. I found cheap plastic coated wire at Home Depot for $5 for 100'. I've made two coat hanger screens and the one big screen and still have 1/2 the wire left.

The screens are set at 8" above the pot. I lift the plants in and out of the grow box for watering. My box takes two 8" pots with screens very nicely.
The screen makes it easy to lift the plant out of the box.

My PVC screen is a custom fit job for a 10" pot. It was made to fit the full inside of the growbox and is about 13"x18". The screen is attached to the pot with bolts. If you look closely, I have two holes drilled in the legs so the screen can be adjusted from 8" to 6". I fill the screen during veg with the screen at 8" drop the screen down to 6" when switching to 12/12 to gain 2 more inches of hieght.

The Super Simple SCROG method is pretty easy. I just tuck all the fan leaves under the screen. You can see yellow garbage bag ties holding larger shoots under. The tucking and tying is pretty much done from the top and sides.

Just tuck and tie until the stretching is over and then relax and watch your flowers grow!
