Hello there.. I dont think that we have met yet.. its a pleasure to meet your aquaintence.. In response to your last post I have some Oaxacan Seeds that I picked up in one trip back home years back. My good friend just got back from Durango Mexico and brought back some seeds as well.. I have read that this is a hot spot of High THC cannabis in Mexico and I am curious to see what sprouts... I have grown out the Oaxaca and they are your typical Sativa Flowers with nice flavour and high but not very potent. Good Daytime Herb though.. The wierd thing is that they appear to have Indica in them. I believe this is due to the fact the Cartels in Mexico have tried to upgrade thier genetics and increase amount of Harvest in a year by adding in some Indica Genetics. Truth be told that If they just paid more attention to their cultivation and harvest methods the this would suffice. Anyhow just thought that I would chime in..

Sam, Do you have any exp with Durango Cannabis?

Hi man, always good to make aquaintences with fellow cannabistas!

I've not got much experience of Mexican strains but here is the description of 'Durango Romance' that was on sale last year by a shoirt-lived UK company called Mexi Seeds. After they had shutdown I discovered the three varieties they sold were all authentic Mexicans so I was pissed I didn't buy any while I had the chance. MarijuanaMat is growing the Michoacan and they look great.

Durango Romance

All seeds come in packets of 10 Pure Inbred line (landrace) Another pure sativa strain from Mexico's Durango region. This strain has been selectively inbred since the late 80's and is therefore a stabilized IBL strain with little variation in the plants. Durango Romance has a beautiful taste and aroma, A really sweet and spicy strain. The yield is impressive indoors while outdoors yield is over 1kg on a large plant. The growth rate of Durango Romance is fast and for a pure sativa the flowering period is short (10-12 weeks). Buds grow tight and dense and glisten in THC nearing harvest time. Indoors plants should be switched to a flowering cycle after 3 weeks of vegative growth This strain responds well to been Toped, trained or knuckled making it an ideal Screen of green plant. An great sativa that is sure to please.

I don't know if she is a pure Mexican or not, but I just harvested this lovely sativa I grew from seeds I collected in Cancun a couple of years ago:

Thats a nice plant B_H. Its always fun with unknown genetics.. I think that my friend has quite a bit of seeds, in the hundreds.. Once they get going ill post pics and if they turn out to be special I wouldnt mind sharing some seeds with folks.. As long as they are grown out... Im on a Mexican Sativa Seedhunt....Maybe make some mexican haze.. LOL.. Joking but its always fun...

Do the chinese smoke hash or flowers, or is it all just cultivated as hemp?
Hi PAGreen, This may help its by RCC and Shao Hong and it's very informative.

Cannabis has spread naturally and has also been cultivated in nearly every province and climatic zone in China from ancient times to the present. The fibers of Cannabis stalks are most commonly used to make ropes, clothes and other textiles, while its seeds are pressed for their oil, or are eaten raw or roasted as snacks between meals (especially in northwestern YunnanProvince). They are also mixed in buttered tea by Tibetans. Some Cannabis is illicitly planted for smoking in the Xinjiang Province of northwestern China. Drug Cannabis is rarely, if ever, applied as a medicine in Chinese hospitals because it is erroneously considered addicting.

Also this to contradict:
Opium and cannabis were equally available in pre-Communist China; but cannabis had no vogue as an intoxicant (Barber, 1970: 80). The Chinese spoke of the plant as the "Liberator of Sin." In India, it was called. the "Giver of Life" (Fort, 1970: 15). One author proposed that temperament may have also played a role in this determination, suggesting that perhaps the placid, practical Chinese did not appreciate the euphoria produced by cannabis (Snyder, 1070: 125).

Also:

Despite the numerous Chinese references to cannabis it has never played a comparable role in Chinese social life to that it achieved in the Middle East and India. Hui-lin Li has suggested that the austere and somewhat puritanical system of ethics and social behaviour founded by Confucius put a stop to the widespread use of cannabis as a psychoactive substance. The often unpredictable effects of cannabis could easily result in a very un-Confucian way of behaving. Opium, says Li, with its narcotic effects, was far more socially acceptable. Whilst a superficially persuasive explanation for the marginal role of cannabis use in China, it fails to explain why alcohol – surely the most un-Confucian of all inebriants! – should have played such an important role in Chinese history. The real explanation may lie elsewhere. That cannabis may have been one of the main psychoactive substances used by the shamans of archaic China may have resulted in the decline of the habit along with the shamanism that gave its use its meaning. The other reason for its marginal place is that traditionally China has seen itself as the unmoving center and the surrounding barbarians of its northern and western borders as a volatile threat. Cannabis, as the chosen drug of many of these neighbouring peoples, would have been an unsavoury choice for many Han Chinese, who didn't wish to indulge in 'barbarian habits'. This still holds true today. In Chinese Turkestan (Xinjiang) the local Muslim peoples, mainly Uighurs, are still associated with cannabis by the Han Chinese.

According to Owen Lattimore, a great traveller and expert on Central Asia, in 1937-38, 42 per cent of exports from Chinese Turkestan to India down one of the old silk routes were in the form of cannabis resin. That cannabis may have been one of the main psychoactive substances used by the shamans of archaic China may have resulted in the decline of its use as the cult of shamanism gave way to religion organised on a larger scale. Hemp does not seem to have been used to any significant degree for its psychoactive properties by the Japanese people, although hemp strands were an important symbol in betrothal and marriage (as were hemp seeds in Europe, see below). The 'gohei', a sacred rod used by Shinto priests to banish impure spirits, has traditionally been made of hemp.

Have you read the 1893 Indian Hemp Comission Report?
Nine volumes 3698 pages, plus 2 secret reports written for the military.
It has a lot of info on cultivation, trade, use, of Cannabis and Hashish in all parts of India. They interviewed smokers, doctors, police, farmers, sadhus, people in the trade, tax officals, in most areas of India. I read the whole 11 volume report at the Bombay Asiatic Library, took 2 weeks. The best report on Cannabis I've ever read.

Very interesting tip, I'll probably have to go India next winter, so will book 2 weeks or so for Mumbai !

By the way, Sam, did you give any try to the Pak Hindu Kush seeds I brough back to you few years ago ?

Irie !
