Where I live, too many people see pit bulls as guard dogs , thats the problem.
I don't think of any dog that is a guard dog as a problem, granted they are not a personal security system, but I have two red noses, and a bull mastif (and two kittens as pit bulls aren't great mousers!)and I can have people over, guests friends ect,my dogs are fine around other people while I'm home. When I'm not at home and they're alone in the house or outside, they are protective.Lot's of breed of dogs are this way aswell. With that said,I have a dog run that is attached to my house which is 40ft by 40ft,which is 8ft high and all around the perimeter inside I have concrete slabs placed against the fence so there won't be any digging out, which cost me a pretty penny to say the least. But when I'm gone I can take comfort in the fact that My belongings will still be there when I get home. With my last Pitbll I used to think along those lines too, saying my dog won't be mean so on and so forth, guess what happened? Someone broke into my place and emptied my house, and stole my dog! The cops just laughed at me! lol People wwould be better off raising their dogs just as people, if you raise a pussy,he'll get taken advantage of eventually,if you raise a bully,he'll end up being hated and will eventually get what's coming to him,but in the middle lies a nice common ground that fits nice... for me any ways.My parents always owned pitbulls, and so have I,and it's unfortunate about their reputations, but for the people that actually believe that media filled crap, says to me that they don't have a head on their shoulders to think for themselves, and I wouldn't have a want or need to socialize with them anyways! That's my rant!! lol
On a different topic, what do people here think of Presa's I think that's gonna be my next dog!!! Man are they ever beatiful!!
I really like presa's .. My buddy bought one about a year and a half ago.. Hell of a dog.. BUT WAY TOO MUCH FOR me to handle..and I have 4 pitbulls.. 2 game breed and 2 confirmation/show quality dogs. Its just that I could easily handle a 40-65 pound angry dog.. While I don't know if I could a 110lb + dog. But hey they are still awesome dogs..
I have two rednosed staffs, and I know what you mean about the weight differetial, but they are super nice looking dogs,a bit high for me,I like mine to be nice and short, but still.... the only thing detering me right now is the price, theres a breeder around here, and she wants around 3500- 4500 cad. It's most deffinatly tempting though!
gotta love them pits. it seems as if there are a lot pit owners/farmers out there. my black one is seven and has many grows under his collar. hes all the security i need in the woods or at the house. and he'll never tell on his daddy just got the lil one so there'll be some more pups runnin the grounds in the future.
my 3yr old 125lb (2yr in the pic) Rot x American Bulldog yes yes it was an accident, nevertheless he's loved, heres his allreadt 97lb 10 month old son (Rot x AB, x Rot) i also own standing up in grandma's kitchen, their very compasionate yet all so protective, ive got a feelin they'll get to earn their keep soon enough
I am a dog lover and have several types of pooch. I love German Shepherds, Mastiffs, and Boxers, but NEVER have had a problem with temperment. I have done a few breeding projects. I have only been bitten while calming my lhasa apso after impacted anal cysts and once by my best friends pit.
My friend, who I have done a couple breeding projects with also preached dog responsibility and very similar temperment suggestions as the OP, but one unsteady movement while petting him and I had to go to the hospital for lacerations to my face and arm.
He loved his dog who never left his side, but I am convinced the breed is vicious.
heres Stinky Lee......she passed 2 Valentines Days ago,,,,,,she was 14, inbred, old family rednose,,,,,,i owned her parents.......they partied at one of my parties and we got a litter of 13 of the best dogs ever...i have had bullies my whole life, born into it....and Stinky was by far the smartest dog ive ever been in the presence of,,,I miss her daily, throw her a pinch of bud daily, and cry for her ,daily.
Jack, if i remebere correctly,,,you just lost your buddy......so try and remeber, all dogs are different, not even a breed can help generalizations,,,,,,all bullies dont have biting potential,,,anymore than all black kids know how to cook rock, or all white kids know how to square dance,,,,,,its all conditioning after good breeding,,,,,,,just like people......breed 2 animal biggots, and yuoll get a super biggot.
all my bullies are safe to be with as long as youre suppose to be....
and I got words of advice for those who dont need to be on my property....
"If you dont belong,,,dont be long=)(or it will be puppy cuffs)
heres Stinky,,,,,,,,she had the Old Family Red stare that would scare me sometimes.....best dog i ever met(no offense to my boy Lamont)
Stinky Lee at age 13
wow blue dog... Stinky Lee was a beautiful dog... I think the reason some people don't like bullies is, they can see through their bullshit , straight to their cowardly soul.
