The window plant 🪴 is doing OK.
She's all ruffled but she perked up.
She's not praying, but that might be because the light is coming in from the side?

IMG_20220123_005654.jpg

I made a really good fitting humidome.
The lid from a $5 cake is a bit smaller than a lid from a $6 cake and they stack together perfectly.

IMG_20220123_020837.jpg

I going to make another one to replace the dome in the closet.
It's going to cost me $11 but it's a good excuse to buy cake 🎂. Mmmmm
LOL

The closet plant 🪴 is just about ready to pop the surface.
I dug her up for a picture. Lol

Loving the DIY dome. Creative.

But... dude... what is it with you and digging up your seedlings? That cannot be good for them. I've had an idea - have you considered starting seedlings in a transparent container so that you can see the roots as they grow, if you gotta see, without uprooting them? Like, seed started right up against the inside of a clear plastic cup with some drain holes? Then you could put that cup inside another opaque cup so that the light didnt hurt the roots (though I've grown plants to maturity in translucent plastic pots before and they seemed fine...) and transplant once it was ready.

The numbers in the closet look good.

I'm just using my LED strips to heat the closet.
I have them turned down enough to get a pretty good LUX reading, so it's all working pretty good and I don't need the incandescent bulbs for heat.

Thanks, and now I've lots of cake to eat. Lol

That's just one of my bad habits.
I love to overwater too.
It gets worse when I'm drunk. Lol

I only dig them up until they pop above the surface, then I leave them alone.

I really do like looking at roots.
Hopefully my window plant will grow roots into the water soon, then I'll have something to look at and take pictures of.

I remember way back when I was 10 years old, I got a "Garden Kit" for Christmas.

It came with a whole bunch of different seeds to start a garden, and it had a petri dish with some clear dried gell in the bottom.
You would add water to it to rehydrate the gell and stick a seed in it, then put a lid on it. When it sprouted and reached above the surface, you would swap out the lid for a tapered dome to make room for the leaves.

It was really cool. You could see all the roots and watch them grow.
There was no mention of keeping the roots dark and the plants did fine.
When the plant outgrew the dome, you would transplant it outside.

I'm going to try to find out what that gell was.
It may have just been regular Certo fruit pectin??

I think that I'm going to buy some and just try it.
That would be fricken cool to watch growing.

That does sound like a cool experiment! I might give it a go too, just for fun. I did a quick search and found "Propogation gel" on Amazon, and also DIY recipes for using corn-starch. Gelatin, pectin, or seaweed based setting agent (Agar) also might be worth a try.
I have a shit-ton of seeds of dubious parentage hanging around (AK's lil bastards, lol) so I could try popping some of those in clear cups just to see how the roots develop in 3-D. If they germinate...

I have cornstarch on hand, so I'll look up the DIY for making propagation gel.

I'm worried that it may not be transparent.

The "real" propagation gel on Amazon is expensive, and gelatin looks expensive too.

I'll check out Walmart for gelatin and pectin if the cornstarch mix isn't transparent.

I have agar as I use it as a thickener in jellies and chilli jams - I've just made up a batch with 250ml rainwater, 2 generous teaspoons of agar, boiled up and with a pinch of potassium sorbate (winemakers fungicide), poured into a tall glass. Its cloudy at the moment... will see if it clears as it cools. And have a small suicide squad of rando bagseed that I will try with it anyway.

Pretty cloudy, but I put the seeds right at the edge. Should be able to see the roots clearly (if any of them germinate!). Might have used too much agar. Maybe 1 tsp would have been sufficient.

Cool !!
I'm looking forward to this.

A whole bunch of crazy experiments are coming to mind.

I could fill my window plant tray with jello. Lol

It will be interesting to see if the roots suffocate.

There probably isn't much oxygen in the gel.
I wonder if O2 propagates through the gel?

I wonder if I can add water on top of the gel and have the roots get to it?

I assume that the gel doesn't dissolve if you pour water on it?

Buds what are those white things with holes that seems a cap of something?is that to anything related to cure buds or co2?

Peace :tiphat:

They are for sealing up a pop bottle or container with a similar lid.
They allow you to feed tubes in and out of the bottle.

Apparently, aquarium people use them to feed CO2 into their aquarium.
You ferment something in the bottle.

I'm going to try and think up something crazy to do with them. Lol

I made an electrical contact tool.
I had a thin strip of stainless steel that I removed from an old wiper blade, and I crazy glued pieces of 600 grit sandpaper to it.

IMG_20220123_155519.jpg

It worked pretty good.

I put a few holes in the dome and lifted it up a bit with popsicle sticks.
It's really humid under the dome.

I'll see what the numbers look like when the lights are on and maybe add more holes.

The closet plant croaked.

It stayed like this all day and just stopped growing.

IMG_20220123_005458.jpg

I propped it up but it didn't help.

IMG_20220123_201629.jpg

So I started a new seed.

I think that it died because I didn't dig a hole in the top of the planter and fill it with fresh, un-nuted seedling starting mix this time.

I thought that I wouldn't have to do that, but I guess I do?

So I'm going to dig a hole and fill it.

I could have killed it by digging it up for pictures, but I always do that and they always survived.

I'm going to buy a couple more cakes and make a dome the same for the closet.
Mmmm... cake. Lol
