im starting on my case right now. Im sill not sure what i want it for though. Either cloning or just vegging. I had high hopes of replicating Blue_adepts rubbermaid build but it takes some work. This is going to be my first grow and it will be with White Widow which is a smaller plant so maybe i can just try out the PC case for my first time. If its successful ill justuse it for cloning/vegging.
What type of CFLs areyou guys using? Ill post pics once i get some fans setup.
They are costly but at home depot i picked up Nvision 100w CFLs...
I like going there because they have an entire wall and they are color cordinated:
Red = warm light to be used in 12/12 or flowering...
Green = bright white which is kind of a neutral between the two
Blue = cool blue which puts out the spectrum that is most beneficial to vegetating
whether you find this brand or not they should still be labeled warm and blue etc
ambrosia as for the carbon scrubber try searching 'DIY carbon filter' in the forum
search there are some fantastic ideas out there
Lowes sells sylvania bulbs, I'm using three 40w bulbs right now for flowering. Two of them are 2700K one is 3000K, I wanna say they were around 9 bucks a piece. I had three 23w 6500K's for the vegging phase, the plants seemed to grow pretty quickly, but then again this is my first grow so I have nothing to really base it off of (3 plants)
I think I'm gonna have to up-size to a custom built cabinet in my closet though, because my room smells like a bag of weed right now even with my little carbon scrubber. Need some more room to work with, but the PC I think will keep going with some new plants.
the most essential thing to make a carbon scrubber work is a nice air tight
ventilation system, in which air has no choice to but enter your PC/cabinet
through one opening and exit through your carbon scrubber...
a good way of doing this of course is PULLING air through an exhaust instead
of pushing air into the the cabinet (so more fans blowing OUT than IN, or simply 0 fans going in)
if you are sucking all your exhaust out a single fan AND a carbon scrubber, test
that air is moving thourgh your system by lighting a lighter near your air intake
with the PC or cabinet sealed and make sure the flame signifies air movement.
any leaks in the cabinet even a couple pinholes and ur room can smell @6weeks
despite your best efforts to make the best scrubber.
tahst the thing about PC's. There are so many holes in them, im just covering them with electrical tape and hoping it works. Although i know it wont over time.
oh i should have included try to use aluminum tape to do this, i mean wallpaper ur
case with this stuff! its reflective and adhesive and surprisngly durable and rips
like tinfoil, located in home depot, lowes, craft stores, or even autozone.
$7-$8 for a roll that will last you for 2pcs (stuff is handy to have around too)
funny you say that, i just got done wrapping the whole interior of the case with it. I found some here at the house and its called "Venture Tape" and it works super well!
I will post a link of my build later tonight! Im going out right now to pick up the lights and another fan
Yeah its certainly true the whole air-tight thing. My case is sealed COMPLETLY except for the back access panel (my case doesnt open from the side), and the piece of MDF i sealed off the front with (it has one intake fan blowing across the lights, and a smaller hole down below as a passive intake). The back panel I sealed up pretty good, I've got my exhaust fan up top with the carbon scrubber, and another intake fan a few inches below it. There were lots of obvious "leaks", so I just took some duct tape and sealed it up as good as I could, now my room doesnt smell that much any more!
So i finished my PC build tonight. I wasnt thinking at all and i hooked up 3 PC fans to one DC adapter and it blew it. Now i have to re-wire everything.
You can aldo dimply put a cup with pinesol and an airator near the pc and it will eliminate the smell. Iv used this to hide large gardens under 1000k hps so know it will work for PC
what I wanna know is how you all got the walls of your pc case grows so smooth. I tried to panda plastic/ally tape out a rubbermaid a few weeks ago and it looks a RIGHT BLOODY MESS rofl
Am wanting to know how to do this as am about to use a midi tower for a bonsai mom/clone cab.. Also, for an average midi tower, how much veg light should one use? I have 2 25w daylight spiral cfls.. would like to get away with just the one, but will use both if necessary, could also have a 20w warm white + 25w daylight.. trying to keep the wattage down
*Very* cool idea there with the power strip doubling as your light mount; You just used the plain old two prong 120V > bulb socket adapters, yes? Any disadvantages to this design that you know of?
ambr0sia, thanks for the compliment, your correct about the 2-prong adapters. I havnt found anything bad about them yet. They were only a buck and they take up no space. Here is a pic of it.
Thanks J I'll take some pics tonight. I started reading yesterday and went home and demoed the case. Got three fans that all work thanks to this thread. I got plenty of cfl's laying around so off to tha HD to get some light sockets and alum tape.
