hey IF: have you actually run PPKs w/pH down around 4.9?? what happened?

*To be clear, I should specify nutes in the bulk reservoir (and this predated Jacks in my grow, so those recipes were pretty scary).*

I ran them in temps over 108 too.

Ran them with just RO top off for a week.

No one noticed.

Spiked EC to 4ish something.

I think its all in the beginning of the 'Interpretation'/'Overview' thread I wrote and is in my links... once you get past the first few pages of 'interpretation'/'Overview' bullshit.

(Um, they grew better in more moderate climates, with less ridiculous feed recipes... but they kept growing in all that absurdity. It was not a preferred location at the time with preferred controls, but it was all I had.)

The man did the work. and it works. So I too am a 'deciple', deciple.. but last time I took a ph reading was almost a year ago. I checked the RO once. I remember getting readings in the high 4s, goin in. IF said it, "it grows". 600ppm or so. I like not going to the hydro store.. Lowes is my friend, and United Plastics and peters: but I went to the hydro shop a week or two ago, new in the area. I bought some of those halo
rings. They're in place, as they came, no drilling.. they're great. thanks gregor. 1/2" input nipple but I step it down to 3/8"x1/4".. Next time I'll buy them on-line. but it is funny to look at all the shit they have and not need any of it.

I'll never go back to the dark side, Delta9. HAHAAHHA!!

I am running a Rio 633GPH to four sites.
My manifold is a PVC 4 way hose splitter, and each opening has a 3/4" female hose thread to 1/2 barb.

Thanks for posting pics. Now I just need to show the after pic of mine drilled out.

4 ppks... it's a 350gph pump, 1/4"ID runs of less tan 3 feet to each ppk, I've measured 1 qt in 60 sec every hour.. will increase to 1.5 minutes/hr after 12/12. Are you drilling out all the holes or just one per row?

It didn't require as much patience as you think.
The holes are all parallel, so drilling through with a drill press is fast.
And it does move a lot of juice. My pulse event is 30 second on 90 minutes off.

The hose barb keeps them from laying flat, but I raised the halo up on a big chunk of aluminum and let the barb hang off. Working at a machine shop has its perks.

It is possibly more than I need, but I am confident that the piston (plunger?) effect is working.

i've just read the last few pages again and i don't see any questions aimed directly at me. if i have missed something please ask again.

hossauce, you have done more changes than i do in an entire year and i only do it for cleaning not for ph issues. i ran the atami b'cuzz for quite a while and grew some nice big plants in it but the ph did run a little higher than it does with turface/ricehulls.

i understand that you, like all of us, especially hydro heads, have come through the regular cannabis growing learning process.

during this time you see a lot of charts and graphs depicting optimum ph ranges for each element. they are all wrong.

no two charts are the same. most depict impossible to reach and maintain "ideal" points.

the ideal ranges for uptake of each element usually are not even overlapping on these charts leading some to the belief that you need to intentionally cause ph drift to grow a plant.

there is no "ideal" ph and the elements are still available at different ph points but are being taken up at varying rates as ph moves around.

all this stuff also makes people think that maintaining an "ideal" point is so desirable that they start "chasing" ph. "oh, shit, i put in too much up and missed 5.8, it's 5.9 or 6.0 so i think i'll throw in a little ph down to get it where it needs to be. or, i just mixed it and it's 4.8 and i will hurt the plants if i don't bring it back up so i'll throw in a little up.

the problem with this approach is that it sets up a chemical pendulum, so to speak. it's going back and forth and you are adding up and down trying to get it to the "ideal" point. you will never get there and your solution will just get more whacked out.

the jack's/calcinit package has been carefully designed to work in distilled or ro water. if you mix it properly and leave it alone you will not have ph problems.

it may run a little higher or lower in various media but leave it alone and you'll be ok. it will reach some sort of balance on it's on. in this device it will then just sit there and operate in a stable fashion for long periods.

chasing ph can cause antagonisms or stimulations to occur with your nutrient package. these can display as various so-called "deficiencies" or hooking, clawing or other morphological changes.

the substances that are typically used for ph up and down are also nutrients. they will combine and interact chemically with your existing nutrient package. this is not a problem in small doses but when you start chasing it adds up.

ph adjusters are designed for small changes not large ones. if you have a combination of water, nutrients and medium that functions outside of a healthy range then you have the wrong combination.

snook is right. you really can put away your ph meter using this device if you have the proper combination of water, nutrient package, and medium.

I'm not picturing the 'hose barb' jammy, "laying flat"?... each of the halo rings I have come with legs (3 black stakes) as you can see in the pics above (legs not pictured, just the 3 hole they go in; cut the stakes to 3 inches).. I tried a 700gph pump with a single halo ring, it made the damn thing put out water like a pressure washer. How big did you drill out those holes? Was it you that said they didnt have a camera? "Pics, or it didnt happen". Heh, heh, heh.

I just got away from drilling millions of holes in the PPKs and now you'll have me drilling millions of idybidy holes

EDIT: There are 14 groups of 3 holes placed around the halo (42) but the groups are random, no to groups spaced exactly alike and hooking it up to the 700gph pump shows that each hole is at somewhat different angle. Would it be benificial to have a wider 'pulse' footprint? or am I too high and way over thinking it?

For me, the easiest way to make holes for a drip ring is to melt the holes with a soldering pencil. The pencil shown below was a 25 watt soldering stick from Radio Shack. I think I paid less than $10 for it and it works great. It helps to have a damp rag on the side to clean off the tip. I used a John Guest tee because I need to move my plants around every week, but a plain 1/4" barbed tee works fine.

How big did you drill out those holes?
To 5/64" or .0785"
Stock size averages .035"
I chose that size, because at 42 holes, it has the same cross-sectional area as D9's 4 1/4" holes.

Your method of determining hole angle is superior to mine, which is sticking in gage pins.
I think my footprint could be wider, because some here get water coming out of the top holes. Mine only comes out of the bottom.

After drilling all of mine parallel, I realized that at the size I was drilling them, I could have forced any angle on them I like. If I ever do halos again, that's what I will do.

i think ya'll been out in the pasture following the cows around again. daybreak after a rain they're growing right out of the patties and it rained yesterday.
