D9 what's your flushing routine? My buddy finished his first all PPK grow w/ Jack's @1500 ppm (said he pushed it since there was no sign of burning) but apparently didn't flush appropriately. Said it came out pretty harsh. He's perpetual now w/ 8 sites in veg even, so I'm guessing should get the next one flushed out pronto. Thoughts?

Jack's @1500 ppm

Stock answer is to run PPK around EC 1.2 (i.e. 600ppm on a .5 conversion).

By feeding way less, but continuously, he doesn't need to flush out the pretty harshness.

Somewhere, following something related to a Heath grow, or a Heath post, or a Heath diagram, it was suggested (by Heath?) that there is a level of feed that is too low... a wide range of feed that is adequate but does not greatly effect growth, and then too much... that fucks things up. I'm guessing your friend was finding the high-end of food that didn't fuck things up, but was unnecessary.

Back to the real issue:

Because I can't be bothered to bend over, I would just start topping off the Main Reservoir with RO and let the shit reverse leach its way out.

Or, if you're willing to do the work--mostly because the feed has been so strong for so long--you could empty the system, run RO through it and repeat every few days until you stop seeing mad EC spikes in the RO.

Even without mad-flush-pulsing, the EC will equalize from the media to the lower reservoir over time.

True story.

:yeahthats

I have not been able to tell the diff between buds grown @ 1.3 in the PPK and buds grown with Blumats @ 1.3 and then flushed. Just for giggles, and because PPK's are so boring otherwise, I'm going to flush one by running it's sub irrigation line to drain and pulsing it with RO until runoff. At least it will give me something to do...

hey, darth, i'm not flushing now. like IF and devilweed said, if you keep your tds on the low side of the equation i don't think it's necessary.

i run between ec 1.2-1.5 and don't get any aftertaste. in the past i have used much higher concentrations and did get a slight taste.

because the ppk presents nutrients and water continuously the nutrient solution does not need to be stronger.

the 22 oz plant i grew never saw anything stronger than 1.2.

In a fit of unadulterated genius, I set up an isolated recirculating top flush to collection basin that that ran through a chiller. In my unadulterated genius, I was trying to combine flush and temp-shock and dark-stress into awesome colors, mad resin, and super cleanness. I was very proud of my engineering.

I added tap water for the flush (EC .250ish). I ran it through for four days. The system stabilized at EC .3.

What a waste of my life.

Nothing to flush out. Nothing to fix.

Just a complicated way to waste electricity and prove that unadulterated genius--or my unadulterated genius at least--is not all it's cracked up to be.

Now, I just cut and hang.

Oh well.

are you kidding, you have a inquisitive nature which is something that is hard to teach and is at least equally important to learning theory

you are doing rudimentary science, you are making an observation and measuring stuff

so now you have a confidence to not flush based on your own measurements, not some forum hype

you have my respect

if there weren't people like you (and many others here) we'd be living in the dark and only growing outside

hey d9 your g13 looks nice!
can u correct me if im wrong, a ppk is wicking double bucket(s) with a controller bucket ( that feed each ppk with (tire valves and 1/4 '' tubing?) that has a float valve which is auto topped by a res, and also a top feed setup on timers? wow

works well in practice, too

The key to this system (in my opinion) is the idea of using a wick to give the water table a way to drop below the bucket and have great root space in that ideal environment with the ability to draw moisture at a rate that will not flood the root zone. The wicks really help the whole system communicate and stay uniform in many ways.

deta9nsx, thank you for your efforts.

I've read and put to practice the events contained in your thread. It is, ultimatly, precise and kinda to the point, although it is looooong and has had many 'redos'. That's OK! It works!

I've played with the tubing and goop but here is a link to a more correct size black tubing.

If someone else has posted one, sorry but I've looked for over a year now and this is the first place that I've found it.

what do you mean by 'more correct'? Since it appears that this is your first post, I assume I am not missing any context from a previous post.

Has there been a search for a more correct tube going on that I am unaware of?

I coul not find 1/4x38 black tubing. I was taking clear 1/4x3/8 clear and gooping 1/4x5/16 black tube, to fit tire valves, for feed lines .
This thread is long and I may have missed something but the black 1/4x3/8 fits the end of the tire valve perfectly. Just screw it on, water tight. I still put a dab of goop on though.

and along with drilling out the tire valves, eases the possibility of a clogged line.

thank you! the g13 is growing like a weed!

really is aggressive growth, though.

33 days from putting a seed in a wet paper towel to that last photo. there is no transplant shock in a ppk. it's grown an inch since that last photo.

i now have two lower branches big enough to clone. i'll take them tonight or tomorrow.

so in 3 weeks i'll be flowering the first one. then 3 more weeks of swt#4. after that i should have a steady stream of g13 for a while.

enough to really tell what it is.

i have now heard quite a few descriptions of the ppk and i believe yours is among the best.

hi, snook! welcome! thank you for the kind words. so you are already growing in one of these? please relate your experience.

i tried to respond to you earlier but it seems the site was down for a while.

i only use the goop on the tailpiece/bucket connection. nowhere else. both the 1/4" od drip line and the 3/8" od line are connected by black latex rubber tubing, 3/16" id and 5/16" id respectively.

i don't have time tonight but tomorrow i'll show the pieces connected.

i was using 3/8" od blue translucent air hose. i thought blue was supposed to suppress algae. well, this stuff not only did not suppress algae, it fostered it, nurtured it, spoon fed it and tucked it in at night. within 2 weeks of installation they were all clogging up daily.

so, i'm making the switch to black 3/8" od food and refrigeration tubing. not as flexible as the vinyl tubing you found but cheap.

well, welcome aboard and grow big!

oh yeah, i used to spear snook. one of the best eating fish in florida. next to hog snapper and yellowtail.
