Tutorial Organics for Beginners

Wow this thread is enormous! A wealth of information and I'm sure if I had a week to read through it all my questions would be answered. But I'm a lazy stoner so I'm just going to ask....I'm going with LC soillessmix 2, recipe 1. My question is how long can the soil sit unused after mixing? I'll be running 12 plants in 5 gallon buckets. So I need to make like 6-8 cubic feet of mix. Does the mix go bad if it sits too long or just get better with time? Obviously I'll aerate it frequently, a few times a week stirring the mix and keep at a good moisture level to keep microbial life happy. I'm also concerned about measuring with large volume. Measuring parts seems will be challenging. Blood/bone/kelp meal will be easy. I figure I'll make two batches, each with a 3.8cuft bag of promix bx. So I'll just need to figure out how much perlite to add. I figure the more the better so can probably just eyeball it for adequate drainage? But not sure how much EWC to add to 3.8cuft

Thanks for the help!

Unless I'm already too medicated which is quite possible.....I would do 3.8/6 = .63 cubic feet. So 1.2cuft each of earthworm castings and perlite. And then mix the blood bone and kelp meals for 6.2 cu ft? And no I haven't forgot the dolomite line. Thanks

the way i done it was 1- 3.8 bail 1 30# ewc and then the amendments at the ratio given. is it for indoor or outdoor?

A 3.8 cubic foot bale of ProMix is compressed. It expands a lot. LC's Mix made with a bale will fill a 55 gallon barrel to the top.

So what should I measure for with a full bale?

Also, without going back, it said you could use ocean forest in one of the mixes. Ocean forest is 'notoriously hot'. Yet one of the recipes shows using ocean forest as the base combined with perlite and dolomite lime. And THEN adding a recipe to it. Which would obviously make it 'HOTTER'.

I apologize for the questions I'm just trying to understand what's up. Does FFOF have chemical nutes which makes it hot?

LC MIX 2 with recipe 1 will rub me about $120 to make 6 cuft. I can buy 6 cuft of FFOF for like $76. I realize I'll still have blood bone and help meal left over to probably make a second batch with another bale of promix.

I know I'm asking a lot but I in your honest opinion is LC2 with recipe 1 superior to using FFOF right out of the bag? Don't get me wrong I'm not against making my own soil. I'll happily do it if the results will be better. Just trying to get a feel for everything.

Thanks for any and all help folks

The recipes are correct. If you want to pay for FFOF that's up to you. I think it's an overpriced bag of peat with a few worm castings and some dolomite thrown in.
You don't need ProMix. Find a bale of Premiere Peat Moss or Fafard peat moss or any Canadian peat and use that.
ProMix is simply Premiere peat that has been sifted to get the big chunks out of it, some perlite added and some soap as a wetting agent.
Fluff the peat out and use it in "parts".
And don't overthink this. It's easy.

Thanks B1. So you believe the mix would be superior. I'm not trying to question the mixes or anything, don't get me wrong. Just trying to get an understanding. I'm glad I've asked the questions because I've already learned alot.

I think my questions were good ones. You didn't answer the part about the FFOF as a base with perlite and dolomite lime. Perhaps you don't have an answer because you don't know for sure the ingredients.

For the first four plants going into the flower room I'm going to have to run straight FFOF due to money issues. For the second round of plants I will make my own soil using the recipe I stated.

Again thanks for the help!

"In addition to providing calcium, dolomite or dolomitic limestone is added to soils as a magnesium source because it contains about 10 percent of this element. It tends to bind to soils and too much magnesium impacts the uptake of other nutrients, so make sure your soils test shows you actually need more magnesium. Again, the efficacy and duration of limestone in the soil is related to the existing ph water and carbon dioxide, another great example of why testing is so important"

LC's Soiless Mix #2:

6 parts Fox Farm Ocean Forest
2 parts perlite
2 parts earthworm castings
Powdered (NOT PELLETED) dolomite lime @ 2 tablespoons per gallon or 1 cup per cubic foot of the soiless mix.

Wonderful thread! Thank you burnone. I myself am going to experiment with mixing my own organic soil blend. I will be using Scott's moonshine mix (rare dankness) as a starting point and will adjust along the way.

Any advice, experience or suggestions on using the moonshine mix?

So far I have a bag of fox farm ocean floor and happy frog, a bag of earth worm castings, dolomite lime, FF fuit and flower, a small bag of coco, green sand, and chunky/coarse perlite.

Anyways, thanks again for the informative thread! Jah bless!

This is what I have plus castings and molasses. Plants are 3 weeks into flower.
