Others...shatter and handleable at room temp....

Same tek, but is more apparent pressing flowers than sift from the flowers.

Are we getting more terpenes from the plant matter with some strains than the sifting process and pressing that way....

Seems to me we are...

Yup adding moisture definately effects clarity with sift. I also found I had to use more heat to get the juices to flow which meant a darker product..The texture was also stickier...
I do pre-warm my sift and pre-compress them now tho....Pre-flatten into disks, then a quick HARD low heat press...

I do add moisture to flowers tho when I am pressing them into pucks, no moisture means I will loose 5% or more yield, and the flattened puck is more shiny when Im done pressing which to me means it is robbing me of my oil.

I am here just smoking my rosin and haven't made any more, i was letting you guys do more research.. I have not added any moisture to my kief, it is working to good how it is. I have been observing what is going on with the buds you guys are doing as well as the kief and pressed dry sift melt i have. The buds make a much lighter color and i think horizontal tee shirt press works good for them. The kief is better with the vertical run to the bottom trough, rosin is darker and sticky when warm at room temp. The dry sift melt is even darker than the kief and the texture is more shattery. Both are yielding around 20% and all of has great flavor, which i hope means it is full of terpens. I am still thinking/ working on ideas to make more at once, but mostly enjoying how little it takes to make me feel good, and all my friend are pissed cause nothing else will satisfy them now. We don't dab so i cannot compare it to any other extraction cause i don't want any of that. New word my friend came up with " Pinultimate"

Great minds think alike. LOL I was just on the way to the cupboard to get some World of Seeds Landrace Afghan that is just about 2 months cured. Should be about ready.

I was also wondering if it was my starting material. I think I even mentioned it in an earlier post. I am using Barney's Farm Critical Kush right now. I only have 2 strains right now to test with. I'll pull an eighth or quarter of the Afghan and report back.

I'm also going to pull the hair straightener back out for another try. I have moved up the learning curve just a little bit since then so I may get better results this time.

I have a question...... why are we using parchment? OK, I understand in the hair straighteners. The plastic wouldn't be great for collection. LOL However, I am using 2 pieces of steel. Couldn't I just use just 2 plain pieces of nice, clean stainless steel? I picture 2 pieces. One flat, the other with tiny grooves all the way up and down. Would the rosin drip down the grooves into a collection area? Maybe a screen over the grooves?

I'll run and try that Afghan and let you know how it works. I am totally hung over today (gig last night) so I have nothing on my calendar but making and smoking rosin all day. LMAO

of course we are getting more terpenes man. and its been tested too, stuff pressed into rosin had up to 3 times as much of some terpenes than the bubblehash it was made from, pretty impressive. i am quite sure a heat press flower sample will be the easiest way to extract the most terpenes into an extract.

one of the strains i test is a real bitch to gather, and is extremely soft all the time, especially when pressed at low heat. super tasty and smelly.

I want to have the flower, kief, and rosin tested of one strain to see the difference. Not sure where the terpenes came from that weren't in the bubble hash, or did heating the bubble hash release them?

You are only averaging 20% with sift? That sounds super bad

Well, I tried the Afghan and got almost exactly the same 7% again.

I did notice I got a lot from the second squeeze with this strain. The CK gives me zero on the second squeeze. This Afghan gave almost as much on the second as the first.

Still not getting what I should. I am going to try the hair iron again.

With flowers I find I need to get it all in one press, that 2nd press is usually just a film that is impossible to collect in any quantity.

it was medium grade bubble, and so when you press it and get 20% return or whatever, all the shit is left behind, almost all the terpenes are leached/steamed. its a simple matter of higher concentration due to material loss.

here are some stats on a strain which is a red congo x panama red:

7 dense balls pressed at around 240, two presses of around 14 seconds. first press oil very light color, and soft and aromatic.

all weights in grams.

2.48 start

2.00 left after one press

1.80 left after two

0.25 yield on first press

0.05 yield second press

1.8+ .3= 2.1 start dry weight. 14.29% yield + .38 moisture(16.13%)

Yeah that foundation extracts guy posted pics of analytical from dry sift, then analytical from rosin made from that dry sift and all the 20 terpenes tested went up.

Looks like I might be getting let down on all that berry white kief. Now I gotta clean that donated tumbler and get it running, damn it.

Maybe pre pressing the kief will help, could be that is why i find the two presses work better, the first is the pre press. I will have to play around with it some more. Quit sitting around smoking the hell out of it...Without the parchment , what are you going to use just the hot plates? I have had it leak out on to the hot plates of the straightner and it was real dark.

You have been just pressing cold for 60 seconds or at 250f. To put much pressure the plates have to be flat, they will want to conform to any voids where they touch. Maybe you could cut some grooves into the plates so when you put them together you make a trough. Using two sets of plates grooved ones inside another set the same size would give equal pressure, then all you need is the heat. Makes the straightner and a vise look like pretty good tech, except for the parchment...

Pressed out the hash then folded into a square then made a little square with a coffee filter and pressed for 5 seconds. I pressed it a second time at 5 seconds again and almost got as much as the first. Smells good cant wait to try it tomorrow.

I would of loved to try it the second I made it but my job random drug tests so that keeps it from happening so now I only smoke on Fridays and am clean by Monday. Damn the man!!!
