Just picked up my 6 ton press at HF. FWIW they're offering a 25% coupon today...plus a free flashlight. I never by extended warrantys but did drop the $12 to get one for this.

Well, looks like this thread may have finally run it's course. LOL

I just had new platens milled for new heaters. Round, this time instead of square. Looking forward to some new experiments.

Anyone else doing anything new?

I just started pressing 10 grams at a time with my medisun press... I pack the rosin revolution bag really tight, cut off the top of the bag and press it vertically. My first press like this yielded 31% amazing rosin using bodhi's black triangle

How long does it take to press the 10 grams?

Well, I picked up my new platens last night. Just another example of how you can make you own heated platens for cheap cheap cheap. These were about $20, complete.

My buddy did a great job. First he turned the flat surfaces on his lathe and got them mirror smooth. When I bought them off ebay, they were saw cut and were (I felt) more than smooth enough for rosin pressing. But, he is totally anal so he had to smooth them off.

Then, he set up a jig in his drill press and simply drilled a hole in each platen for the cartridge heater.

I got 2 sizes. One is for about 1 gram presses (2" diameter and 1" thick) and the other is for about 3 gram presses (3" diameter and 2" thick).

The cartridge heaters are snug but still loose enough to swap them out from block to block.

I will be testing them today or tomorrow.

I bought everything on eBay. Search "Cartridge heater". They are about $5 each, direct form China. Takes about 2 weeks for shipping.

The aluminum round block was $5 for the 2 small pieces and about $15 for the 2 big ones.

Well, there you go.... heated platens for about $20.

Ringo, are you using a controller or just doing the light dimmer method?

I am using a fan speed controller. And, oddly enough, in today's tests it wouldn't go LOW enough????

Even turned all the way to the lowest setting, the temperature of the platens was about 275 -280F. I had to turn it off to get it lower.

I did not test the larger platens because they will not fit under my Harbor Freight A-Frame press. I need to do some modifications before I can test those.

I did test the smaller blocks today and I am totally impressed. The small size allows all the rosin to escape from the heated area so it doesn't overcook.

Unfortunately, it barely fits a 1 gram puck without the material squeezing out the sides. It fit a half gram puck much better. So, I feel that 2" diameter is too small for any real practical use. I will test the 3" blocks tomorrow as I have a gig tonight and need to start getting my gear packed.

I did get a couple pics. One of the blocks all set up in the press. And, the other is a press.

I have not gathered all the samples yet but I definitely increased my yield with this revision.

More to come...... :)

Got a set of SS tubes sitting under my desk.

2x 4.5 inches.

Picked them up for buddy.. Not sure if he is going bottle jack or pneumatic press..but he is excited. had them hovering in the 185-195 range yesterday for 20 minutes or so to make sure the ptc heater would do the trick with another 2inches of SS added.

are you talking tube extraction? i hope so, thats the future i think. pressing plates is ok, but for volume i bet tubular would slay..
