i'll let the chickens into the garden area about 15-20 minutes before they go to roost, that way their damage is somewhat limited, and they don't cover too much area.

Does anybody know anything about Prairie Chickens? I think I can get eggs or chicks on those. But I still think it is a bad idea since I know nothing about raising birds. I really need the male tail plumage from them though... I tie Turkeys for Thanks-Giving out of them...Add some spun Black dear hair and viola. I do this on giant 5/0 shark hooks.

Maybe I just need to relax and smoke a dubbie??? Here we go; https://youtu.be/F0-Kv1k41Kw Only a true Coloradoan can say yes to this...and describe the phenomenon that makes it possible here.

doc, keeping chickens is really easy. It can just suck to add something else that needs daily attention. but they are surprisingly fun and rewarding.

Yeah, But we have SEVERAL feral cat colonies in the immediate neighborhood. I have about 4-5 I am feeding through the dog pound's catch and fix program.
But I do want Prairie Chickens...

I am still trying to decide on when to turn off the lights outside this year??? Some are too small yet, but it is July??? I play a dangerous game with this every year...The hoppers might have kicked me out this year? I push late into Fall for harvest...A crazy nail biting game every year. They are just 2 CFLs set to add a few more hours to the growth. This is why I still don't know if some are male or not.

FEMALE chickens.

Males will have your neighbors calling code enforcement on you every other day, unless you're in a proper rural area.

I'm starting with bunnies :) No noise, good meat, perfect compost source.

As far as feral cats, the only real solution for that is a more dominant animal or group of animals that'll keep your flock safe, barn cats, dogs, doublekindness has a murder of crows that lives in one of the trees above her house and protects her flock from hawks and many other predators, they're super territorial. I don't think those decoys really work very well like predator urine, etc.
The one missing amendment I noticed that might make a significant difference between seasons is neem seed meal, really helps slow down that initial rush of breeding when temps get warm.

Hey has anybody on here ever heard of Jungle Cock Nails? They are a type of wild chicken from the rain forests of ??? (I can't remember). I use them for eyes on tied fish type flies. But almost all of the feathers I need are from males. They are the showier in birds. One of the most used is the saddle hackle from a rooster. They are thin and long and turn into instant wings for your fly as you spin them around the hook shank...Yeah, I REALLY need to go fishing.

Take a look a Murray McMurray Hatchery. They sell some rare/special chicks. IIRC, they do carry a strain that Dr Whiting developed. :big grin: http://mcmurrayhatchery.com

Saddles for less than $20. That'd probably work. Some of the Silkies have some finer/longer hackles. Barred Rocks, or Plymouth Rocks? But, it sounds like you have a lot on your plate already.

I am considering a few of a heavier breed, for the eggs. Sooooo much better. They are better eating too.

Sorry I was looking for a bit more info on the little individual light dep tent rather than the strain. Do you have any more pictures of the outside of it? Any explanation on construction and what you do to dep it etc.?

Thanks

Small hoop house I put 3' rebar in ground leaving 1' out of ground and put 1" pvc over rebar and bending it to creat the hoop. Wrapped it in clear plastic I thought this might help acclimate the plant and used panda plastic black on one side white on other, white facing out with another piece of pvc acting as an arm when I unroll and cover up so that the pvc is rolled and tied on the end... One thing I learned is that by uncovering around 10am is key for me that way I can cover at almost any point at night, at first I was unrolling at 6 and having a hard time meeting the time constraints ... Hope that makes a little sense

That's been my biggest problem so far, time constraints. I've been lucky though in that I can have somebody else take care of it for me if I give them enough heads up notice.
