NEW Colorado Growers Thread

Been breedin for a lot of years, have over 100 strains, some of em growin all over the world. And I flower with T5's so by all means feel free to ask questions?

The temp thing is just another assumption myth much like light leaks

and T5's put off heat don't let anyone tell ya they don't

I was wondering if where the seeds were made had any effect on them so I'm glad you said all over the world!

The T-5 does put off some heat, just not as much as my 2 400's! What do you think I should run the blue bulbs or the red, or mix it up? 8 bulb T-5 btw... :thank you:

I've made a few seeds under T5s. They work wonderfully for that purpose but with less light intensity I'd let the seeds mature for no less than 6 weeks. This should ensure that the seeds that do make are nice n plump n healthy.

As far as sex determination goes, what ganoderma says is correct with the addition of being able to change sex expression through hormone manipulation.
According to Chimera, T.H. & S.S., hermaphrodites/intersex plants are confused females. They just can't make up their mind whether to be Kaitlin or Bruce so try n be both.

I figured that light intensity would play a part in the whole thing. I was planning on running them until the seeds start dropping off the plants on their own so six weeks is no problem! Three breeders I respect right there! :thank you:

I would let the seed plants go as long as possible to be sure the seeds are nice and ripe. It's like flowering plants out normally, why go the trouble to veg and flower the plant all the way only to pull it a week or two early?

I ran 2 400 CMH's for years before switching to my 972 watts of T5, so mine actually put off more heat than my 2 400's

But I hear ya !

Best bulb for what you are doin is a GE 4100K T5HO 54 watt

best fixture is Oracle high bays ! (they come in all sizes)

wow, talk about deja vu
i'm considering exactly the same thing
switching out a big LED unit taht makes lots of heat in a 4ft x 8 ft tent for making seeds in favor of (potentially) cooler running t5 setups.
I'd def get better coverage of the space with the t5's, and almost sure i would get cooler temps with 2x t5 (16 total 4 ft bulbs burning) than the LED. (Don't let anyone tell you that LED's all run cool!)

I've never heard the thinga bout hotter temps produce more male seeds.... I was under the impression that conditions during germination could possibly influence the male/femal ration, but unaware of any connection of that ratio to the temps during flowering in which the seeds were formed....

speaking on seeds....
How long should it take for these plumpers to turn nice and dark and stripey?
I've got plants that are in their 6th week of flowering, been pollinated since week 3 or so.... tonsof seeds visible and all plump and juicy looking, just still all greenish/white/grey

I try to let my seed plants go 80-90 days if possible. I use to go 70 days, but the extra time has helped the overall viable seed count rise.

I leave my male in with the ladies for about the first full month.

I have seen tests where you can up your female ratio by a very large amount. I can't remember the technique, but it was very effective. This person got somewhere in the 90% female range from standard seeds.

Does this mean they changed sex? I don't know. Is everything set from the date of pollination? I don't know. Will your brain hurt from trying to figure this out? Most likely. :)

Good point, bud quality or degraded trichs really don't matter to me. Just trying to preserve the seeds is my goal. Well that and chuck some pollen on some clone only stuff... I might S1 them but thats a different story. :tiphat:

In flower I'm running a 400 Mh and a 400 HPS both are spendy hortilux bulbs just new/old bulbs ive had around... I'm cheap and i had the bulbs and they were new bulbs so... I have a excess of growing gear including 1000s and shit, I'm just not breaking it off anymore so a little setup does me fine... I have some plantmax red T-5s 54 watt bulbs but i don't know the K on them.

I have the fixtures already, I use the blue bulbs to veg with, the red bulbs were from me trying to add side lighting in my big flower room... :thank you:

I posted this in my on going thread about my garden, but thought some of you would appreciate it. I tested the viability of nematodes after being stored in the back of the fridge for 70 days. I have had success after 90 days of storage, but if you use within 60 days you should be good to go. Buy in bulk and save some money by keeping them on ice yourself.

What were you using them for and how successful was using them?

I use them as one part of my soil defense plan. I don't use them because I have a problem.

I run fabric notill pots. I add rove beetles, and hypoaspis miles to them. I will add nematodes when I start veg, and when I flip to flower. With these three things your soil is majorly protected.

My veg area is covered in rove beetles. When I put freshly rooted clones in beer cups in there within 3 days the rove beetles are going to town on them.

Fungus gnats are a thing of the past at this point. I may get a couple of flyers here or there, but the larvae don't stand a chance.

In case I do get flyers, I have pitcher plants hanging up and they will eat the flyers.

It's all just part of the big puzzle that we try to piece together to make this gardening thing work for us.

Tight.

I set out 2 batches of 3 types on Nematodes last Month. I hope they will make it through the summer since I don't have any money to but more.

Is there any place/way to gather Rove Beatles in Southern Colorado??? I gather ant-lions and lady bugs...For some reason Lady bugs are attracted to my house??? It almost time to start finding mantises and lace wings...Although I have seen some lacewings I like to give them to increase their numbers before moving them.

My cages are full of garden spider webs, and you can see the wolfs running along the ground sometimes, and several colors of jumping spiders are in on the plants and walls.

What I can't believe is the MASIVE numbers of grasshoppers this year. I am starting to layout NOLO-BAIT all over the yard because of them...I keep remembering what my Grandma always told me..."After the drought is over the hoppers gather numbers till they swarm and eat everything." I believe I posted that in the old thread about 2 years ago...This year it might come true??? I am wondering???

interesting thought on the rove beetles. To be honest I bought mine, and they are fucking everywhere now. Under my pots, in my pots, etc.. They have to multiply like crazy.

There's gotta be a way to trap some in the wild.

I did see this

Maybe some help to find them in the wild

So it's not just me then? I was thinking to myself for the past several weeks, "Holy shit, what the hell is up with all these damn grasshoppers?!" Granted I was only paying attention around the middle of July last year instead of from the beginning of the season. I spray my plants with neem or mostly buildasoil's essential oil blend as part of my IPM. They don't give a shit about either of those and continue to munch away. Hillbilly here on the boards was talking about having good success with hot pepper sprays to ward them off which I think I'll look into. I have also been spreading out Nolo bait but I can't tell if it's done anything or not. I did that on two different occasions probably about a week apart.

Just went searching and found this info regarding the product.

How can I tell if Nolo Bait™ is working?

In the very young, grasshoppers death may occur within 1-3 weeks. Once grasshoppers reach the third instar stage of growth they have developed enough body mass to allow more spore infection. When populations are not extreme, visual symptoms of an infection are more easily seen. When densities are heavy, infected grasshoppers are easily camouflaged by mass numbers of moving bodies. Sick and infected grasshoppers will stay low or on the ground under plants and hidden from sight, or are quickly consumed by other grasshoppers and predators. Heavily infected ‘hoppers will be slower to hop and may fall over upon landing. Often they are reluctant to hop at all. Their eyes become cloudy instead of dark brown and the abdomens of sick hoppers will become whiter as well. Dead, partially cannibalized grasshoppers may be found clinging to plant stalks. New hatchlings that ingested the bait die more quickly and are rarely seen as they are readily consumed by other grasshoppers, insects, birds and reptiles. Due to the nature of this product (i.e. microsporidial pathogen), efficacy may be affected by such factors as weather, grasshopper population densities and insect migration.

How fast does Nolo Bait™ work?

Killing grasshoppers quickly does not always offer the greatest benefit when using Nolo Bait™. The youngest grasshoppers will die most quickly, usually within 3 weeks of eating it. Buildup and transfer of infection will continue in larger immature hoppers that don’t die as quickly. Heavily infected grasshoppers will become slow, lethargic and reduce their feeding as spore builds up inside them. Nolo Bait™ is a long-term suppression product. Infection will reduce the feeding and reproductive capabilities of the grasshoppers. In turn, these grasshoppers are often cannibalized by healthy ‘hoppers that have migrated in and Nosema locustae spores continue to spread through the population. Successive use each season will result in fewer healthy eggs being laid and fewer eggs surviving to hatch in the spring.

Spinosad will kill young grasshoppers. I had millions of the fuckers on my property in arkansas. Spinosad once a week in the grassy areas kept the numbers down.

Be aware that Spinosad will also kill bee's. If I recall with out reading the instructions again. One way you can avoid the effects on the bee's is by spraying at night or early morning when the Bee' aren't out yet.

I'm more than aware that it will kill bees. If used at certain times of day the bee killing will be minimal. Where I was if I didn't try to address the grasshoppers I would have had no food to eat. You have to weigh the pro's and con's of each environment and situation.

You literally would not have believed the amount of grasshoppers that existed on my property. It was apocalyptic.

I still had tons of bees, and up to 1000 lbs. of food per year.

I have some on the shelf and I'll probably give it a try. I don't ever see bees around my plants so I should be good there. I like that you can spray the surrounding plants and ground cover and not just your cannabis plants. Mine are at 2 weeks flowering in the greenhouse now and I don't want to be spraying much more on them for the duration.
