Has anyone in Massachusetts dealt with purple top phytoplasma disease yet? It's spreading rapidly in the midwest due to leafhoppers.

There is a thread about this in Roll It and there are cases reported in Massachusetts that could be the same.

edit.

There's a Mass thread in RIU and a guy is pretty sure he has it.

Just fixing things since all the damage yesterday. Got hit with bad storms for like an hour and a half. 2-3 inches of rain dumped with some heavy winds. Been working as much as I can to get trellis up but not soon enough. Lost JDOG, and hpk. Have 4 branches left on headband and dosidos. Will get pics up when I have time. Definitely thinned the garden a bit. Good luck

Just this guy, ya know?
I need to start a BT foliar regimen. The past couple years I've only used it during flowering and it's about that time.

I've started to spot some strange leaf damage the past few days. Where the leaves are kinda crinkled and folded up into each other with tiny holes poked/munched through the leaves along with some sort of white "webbing". I pulled apart/unfolded the leaves and a tiny little caterpillar/worm fell out.

I've never seen this before from caterpillars. The only time I've spotted cats is during flowering when they've already found their way into the bud.

No serious damage so far...just a few fingers on two fan leaves on a large plant that...but I def gotta get on using some BT.

I have a little bit that I bought two years ago but I assume the bacteria is likely no longer alive/active at this point?...either way I was planning on buying a new bottle.

How often do ya'll apply BT? Last year I did so once every 10-ish days if I recall correctly, starting in late July. Towards the middle/end of sept I think I stopped applying it.

.
I think if stored in a cool, dark place the BT should last 2-3 years for sure.

That sucks I'm sorry to hear that. We had a Tornado warning here in western mass, it touched down about 45 minutes south west of me. Hopefully nobodies plants got the wizard of oz treatment.

yer it does - this is my third OD attempt but this time im running things that might do ok around here - my patch - started inside and planted in the ground July 7 -

I got some cool freezland crosses from a friend this year, he sent some f2 seeds he made when he heard I might not get my seed order in time.

I also have two bangi haze regs but I havent determined sex on them yet, I should probably go scope them now

That's a bummer man, sry to hear.

I can't imagine having to deal with gnarly weather like that and having my plants wrecked in basically an instant. I feel for those of you that do.

Thanks for the reply on that.

It is something I've been wondering about.

The bottle of BT has been in a closet the entire time at room temp (low to mid 70s). I think I bought it two years ago. Figured it should last a little while but wasn't sure.

I used some yesterday since there was more in the bottle than I remembered, even if it isn't active anymore it doesn't hurt...

...even tho the stuff I have right now is probably still active I'm going to grab a new bottle soon, just in case. I'd hate to find out the hard way lol. I'll probably just poor the old stuff into the new bottle.

The garden is looking much better today than it was Sunday and Monday. It took a while but finally got everything back up and with a little help from the sun most plants are looking normal again. Good luck with the storms everyone

Crap, yeah, I cut a branch off a Bog Sour Grape earlier today that had that purpling on a lower branch. Leafhoppers have been something fierce this year.

I've also been noticing weird caterpillar activity, the webbing glueing leaves together with something inside... and I've been knocking fuzzy caterpillars off leaves this morning. Will find some BT, I'm out.

Looks like it's not bad if you catch it quick and chop the affected areas.

Getting windy here. Piants got knocked over a few times.

Dang man, they got blown over INSIDE the greenhouse?

I have kinfolk not far from you...They said it's wet and windy...

Seal it up... your plants look too good to be losing them now!

Inside plants were snug as a bug. So far I pushed six outdoors bc it's getting too crowded. Those will be give aways after sexing. I overplanted and some people will be very happy to get them. Looking to keep twelve and a couple spares.

Glad I read this thread today, I just noticed some splotchy dark purple spots on one of my tops today in SE Michigan. Plenty of leafhoppers around, just chopped it off to be safe.

Can sometimes be hard to tell whether something is caused by a disease, deficiency, or something else altogether. In my case I gave it a day or two and then decided to chop it, lower branch anyway, and not yet flowering.

You made the right decision, I have gone out to find just a single top infected, the next day it's half the plant.

Guess I don't have enough posts to share pictures?View Image

I've seen similar marks/colors occur on the tops/newest growth of a few of my plants over the past 3 years.

Actually saw it a few days ago on the Garanimals I'm growing.

The times I've seen something similar, tho, it's not nearly as dark as in that pic....it's just some light slight purple/brownish discoloration/tinting on the newest growth.

I've always been curious what it might be....but all the plants I've seen this happen on never seemed to have any issues and made it all the way to harvest just fine.

Perhaps the cause of the markings I've seen on my plants is something different than what you have going on (?)....tho it looks very similar, just not as dark as in that pic.

It had me worried since it so much darker and splotchy looking than my other growth tips. Most of my tips have a faint purpling going on but look a bit different. Heres a pic of what most of the growth tips look like at the moment. Just a very slight purple to them.
