Here is my bushweed cob. It’s not really Impressive as it was either first or close. I didn’t continue with these leaves as they are small.

Have you made cobs before and how did it go? I am going to try the Tangwena method of making Malawi-Cob this fall if the heat and grasshoppers leave me any MMJ. I already have the vacuum food saver machine and that method looks like it would work.

I haven't made cobs before.
But a long long long time ago, I used to do something similar with my buds.
Wrapped them hard and tight for long-term storage.
They turned that darker green (plus the red hairs!) over time.
And to smoke them you had to cut them fine with scissors as they were hard and dense.

I have some thoughts about this.
May try the method where the flower is packed into bamboo tubes.
Lots of bamboo here, could buy them cheap or just cut my own.
I've talked about it a bit with Tangwena and others on the big cob thread.

Here is my bushweed cob. It’s not really Impressive as it was either first or close. I didn’t continue with these leaves as they are small.

Hehe, nice.
You tied it to look like Thai Stick? Thai Cob!

I feel a cob is better than no cob, regardless of looks etc
👍🏼

You guys are really pushing me in the cob direction.

Though, to be honest, right now, my main concern -- apart from just the usual grow issues, and bringing my girls happily to harvest -- is how to dry and deal with them.
They're getting so big!!
There's a very real chance I'm going to end up with lb here, or even more!
I know how much I pulled from the SSSTN girls and the Grail, when they were tiny first round.
Now they're like 10x the size.
Then there's the Grail x ThaiFrican girls, that are easily going to be 2m tall or bigger!

At the back of the apartment grow area, I found a big tree branch, broken off in the typhoon.
I've positioned it to act as a drying rack.
Can hang a few big colas, or even whole top of a plant, of the branches.
But it won't be enough space, so there are a few other areas as well to hang things.

I may need some very big bamboo tubes.
Stuff 100g into each of them.
Or use smaller tubes, but more of them, keep the rest in storage.

Too many things to think about, haha!!

It now seems pretty clear that both the Grail x ThaiFrican ladies are starting to flower.
More pistils are appearing up near the growing tips.
And the nodes of the branches are developing flower structures rather than just straight branching.
Tall girl must be 6' already now, 180 cm, or so.
Her sister not much shorter.
They really seem identical, just that the shorter girl has slightly shorter node length.
Not that the taller Grail x ThaiFrican has very long nodes, to be honest, very reasonable for her pedigree.
Their mother was the faster Grail girl, chunkier with bigger calyxes, who only took 80 days flowering.
And their father (the only ThaiFrican of four to survive the bugs!) was fast to flower, too.
But given they aren't F1s, with mixed heritage, though I think they'll be fairly fast (12 wks??), who knows??

The Lemon 'n' Lime Jones girl is starting to get thick.
About 15", 38cm, long main bud.
Lots of pistils coming out, but still fairly leafy.
The calyxes and inner leaves are all very sticky.
Unfortunately, some kind of insect likes to make little web / nests in her flowers.
She won't grow much taller, but the flower clusters are still building in shape.
Maybe 6 weeks to go, at a guess, hard to say at this early stage.
Or end of September, perhaps?

Both the SSSTN girls and Ms Grail are still just vegging along.
Maybe, just maybe, showing more signs of pistil formation at the tips.
They're both around 4'6", 150 cm (?).
Many strong tops on all three of them.
Some of the tops on the SSSTN, from Sticky pheno I think, have very solid stems.
May get some big spears out of that girl in particular.
Looking back at pictures of their first round, I'm really not sure which SSSTN is which! Haha!
The Fluffy pheno was maybe more branched in the end.
I hope that Sticky is the bigger one this round, which would be the slightly shorter, thinner stems.
Grail is still quite delicate in comparison, but also has many growing tops.
She's (her pot) still lightly more prone to drying, so should probably top up with more local leaf compost.

And all seven of the little SSSTN (Sticky) x ThaiFrican seedlings look quite happy now.
They're grown an inch or so, looking much nicer color than before, too.
Given both their parents showed sex around day 30 or so, under 12/12 lighting, we can maybe expect some male pollen a month from now.
They're actually getting more light than I thought, because the bottom of their pot-buddies are relatively leaf-free.

Made a little visit to water, but just as some light rain came down.
Watered anyway, since I was there.
All looking good.
Little SSSTN x ThaiFrican seedlings are coming along, too.
Weather forecast for next week or two shows higher chance of rain.
And temps will be lower, from maybe low of 25C to high of 30C-32C.
Perfect, really, though it'll be cloudier so somewhat less photosynthesizing.
At least they won't dry out as much.
All good at Maria's Haze Heaven Hacienda.

Day 142: 135V + 7F

I had to go back to look at the starting time of these plants to check the days.
All seed plants up on March 21.
We'll take the revegged plants as starting on the same time, for ease of calculation.

Daily highs of around 33C and lows around 27C overnight.
A couple of times there has been very light misty rain.

Family pics!

And from the other side

Both these SSSTN girls are just starting to flower now, too.
They're both about 150 cm tall, about 60".

I think most of the above pic is just the tall girl.
From another angle

PXL_20240810_080213055.jpg

In this great mass of sativa leaves, the tall girl is on the left and her slightly shorter sister on the right.
Tall girl is now about 180 cm tall, give or take, about 72".
Medium girl is just about 160 cm, or 64".
Both are starting to show some flowering shape, with Medium Girl looking a little more advanced.

Hidden up between the two is Lady Lemon 'n' Lime Jones.
She's doing well in flowering, despite getting a bit crowded out.
Really starting to thicken up a bit now.

PXL_20240810_080132421.jpg

Getting thicker and tighter, but still weeks away.

One Revegged Grail (NvHz x Mullumbimby) (NLD pheno)

Close range photo, as I balance on the edge of the balcony and try not to fall off...
This lovely lady is also about 150cm or 60" tall, too.
Lots of tops on her, as she is now starting to flower as well.

Seven SSSTN (Sticky) x ThaiFrican seedlings

Forgot to take pics of these girls.
But they're just little ones tucked away down low, not much to see.
Still, all seven of them seem quite happy.
Let's see how big they get before the gender reveal party.
I think if I get a few males I may just mix their pollen and use it together.
Definitely definitely must pollinate the two SSSTN girls -- their mom and aunt.
But dust back to these Grail x ThaiFricans may be fun, too, with the seeds then having ThaiFrican on both sides.
And the Grail lady while I'm at it.
Luckily all these plants are big enough that I can do a whole good sized lower branch.
Knock out a few hundred seeds from each mother.
None of this 10-20 seeds business this season!

Bonus Bat Pics!

Forgot to mention, the front gate has been chained close again.
Means it's a bit trickier to access the garden, have to go through the bat cave.
But it's safer, as other people are far far less likely to stumble upon the party.
PXL_20240810_080621172.jpg

Their numbers seem a bit less after the typhoon.
Poor little batties, hope they're doing okay.

Peace and Love,
~MJS

Looking forward to the photos! 🌴🦇🌴

Btw, bats are everywhere, we even have some flying between the houses here in a small city in west germany. People just don't see them.
At dusk, I think it's sometimes easy to mistake them for swallows.
But, in my limited experience, swallows fly with grace and precision, and bats fly like they're drunk.
Maybe they've just been getting into someone's 'special sauce'...

Gave the plants a watering today.
No pics.

All seem well, though the Grail x ThaiFricans could do with a little more nutrients I think.
The medium Grail x ThaiFrican in particular is showing good flowering shape, setting out her flower structure.
Lots of little flower branches popping out from the main branches.
Then the tall Grail x ThaiFrican is next in terms of progress.
@ojd -- what kind of flower structure does the ThaiFrican have? (Outback x (NvHz23 x Kariba)?

SSSTNs and Grail NLD are still just showing a few pistils but not really changing shape, yet.

L'n'L Jones is of course still bulking up.

Tall Grail x ThaiFrican must be almost 200 cm tall now, 78"!
Medium Grail x ThaiFrican, both SSSTN, and the Grail NLD are all about the same height, +/- 160 cm = 63".
L'n'L Jones hasn't grown much for a while, she's less than 100 cm = 39".

Hopefully some rain from now through the weekend will keep their water levels topped up.
I won't be around to baby them.
Temps about the same, high/low of around 32C-27C.
Humidity still around 80% or so, the usual for here.

A huge spider -- like, the size of my hand if legs included -- had spun a web just at the top of the stairs.
I almost face-planted it, as I carried the water bucket in.
Had to break a little bit of its web to get through.
Then a few minutes later I did it again, but worse!, and had to pull its wire like silk off my cap!
I met (meaning, walked into!) one of these last visit, just down outside the bat cave.
Their web silk is incredibly tough, and I've heard they have a nasty bite!

Useless trivia.. bats that look drunk are actually using something akin to radar for finding flying insects to eat. I always thought of them as expert flyers for this reason. Grace... not so much. Quite interesting you have bats. Spiders no gracias.

When I walk through the bat cave and they fly around,
I'm pretty sure that they are checking me out.
I can hear them squeak squeak.
Though they fly quite straight and not all drunken, hehe.

My assessment of bat flying is purely an anthropomorphic projection. ;-)

Bats -- cool!
Spider -- heck no!!

Watching the weather reports from afar,
it seems Mother Nature is providing rain for my girls while I'm away.

I think the rainy season is finally properly getting underway.

Though I should really provide some more medium for those big pots.
That natural compost actually gets dry faster than I thought.

Rainy season isn't just more rain, but higher humidity, and lower temps.
All helping keep the moisture levels in the medium up and not drying out.

By late October to November and then December, the rain will ease off.
November is one of the drier months, along with December and January.
Aiming for a Nov to Dec harvest at this point!!

Spring-Summer Grow -- Maria among the Hazes!

Day 153: 135V + 18F

It's been over a week since the last picture update.
Weather has had a fair bit of rain, keeping them watered.
And some wind, too.
Rainy season looks like it's properly underway.
The area around the garden is very lush, the jungle taking over everything!
I didn't really need to visit to water.
But I did want to check on them.
I also topped up the pots with some potting mix + 3-5-5 organic amendments + kelp powder.
Just keep those pots a little bit fuller, more medium for the roots, and better water retention.

Family pics!

I'll give you a different angle, from outside the bottom of the apartment, looking up.
This is after I did some work on them, so their growing angles are a little weird.

PXL_20240821_014057298.jpg

Those trees in behind make it hard to see, but...
Left is the Grail Project NLD girl, in the middle the two Grail x ThaiFricans (who are further back, so it makes them look shorter, even though they definitely are not!), and on the right are the two SSSTN girls.

From up top... when I got there, I found all of them except the taller Grail x ThaiFrican heavily leaning forward (away from the camera) toward the south.
Not sure what was going on. Maybe the recent winds pushed them down?
They weren't broken or anything, just leaning forward up to like 30 degrees or so, with the flowers facing up.
And it's not like they are heavy with flowers.
Though, some of those branches and tops are getting really long now, like 100 cm or more!
You can see in this picture some rough support work on did, with a wooden piece on the left and a white metal pole in the middle tying around the main stem with a zip-tie (I kept on site), and on the right I broke off a long branch from downstairs to put it in for support (not tied).
I'll need to do some more work here next visit.
But it got them back up for now, well, most of the branches, anyway.

Left: two revegged SSSTN (Sticky and Fluffy phenos)
Middle: two Grail (fast) x ThaiFrican seed plants and a much smaller hidden Lemon 'n' Lime Jones girl.
Left: one revegged Grail Project (NLD pheno)

Middle pot also has seven very small seedlings of SSSTN (Sticky) x ThaiFrican (same father as the father of the Grail x ThaiFrican seed plants). One of these small seedlings is shower pistils, so I'm guessing the rest will be showing sex fairly soon!

Two Revegged Super Silver Sour Thai Neville (Sticky and Fluffy phenos)

PXL_20240821_013304177.jpg

The leaves of this biggest top look on a weird angle because they were laying low and growing up, but then I just staked up upright before the photo.
Lots of big colas here from both girls.
They show the least flowering of all the older plants, but they are starting.

PXL_20240821_013312463.jpg

Not sure which of the two phenos this pic is from.

PXL_20240821_013317633.jpg

PXL_20240821_013326389.jpg

I think this is the biggest cola that was laying down and now staked up.

Other plants in the next post....

Peace and Love,
