Malawi Style Cob Curing.

I saw that you guys use the dehydrator many times to dry the cob, my question is; After sweat / ferment, how long do you dry your cobs in the dehydrator at 35c,how you know that it is dry enough to age only and to be sure that it wont ferment anymore from that point?
What kind of room would it be better to keep the cobs stored? I mean the place where you are going to keep it for the long term? the pantry where I keep the jam jars would be ok to keep them there in vaccumseal? I think that the rh does not fluctuate in that chamber, it remains stable and theres a little vent hole from the outside.

Hi @gumzgi, great questions! I don't use a dehydrator and will be interested in the responses from those who do use one.
I keep my cobs stored vacuum sealed and placed in a cardboard box in a closet. The temp is pretty stable and doesn't vary much. I'm not sure if light would affect the cobs as they are aging so I keep them in the dark just in case.
I've made wine for many years and light is not a friend of wine, especially wine that you want to age for a while. Not sure if that also applies to cobs but what the heck, I keep them in the dark.

its not about the dark , i had a year ago some cobs keept in the room that i sleep and here the rh vary alot and my cobs blacked out alot , im sure when i dryed them in the 1st stages i didnt dryed enough and there was still to much moisture in the cob and some got black and so i lost the flavor and that speedy high.
i will try dry more this year , gonna start make some cobs in a week

Hi my friend its better to start with drier buds that way they ferment less and keep more terps and speedy effects.
I am sorry I cant give you a definitive RH but I do not have a meter and just go by feel and experience.
I know that is not much help but SLOW drying of the buds to the stage that you could roll a joint and smoke it is the best I can do.

The cobs will darken over time if not completely dry during storage so if you reach a stage during the cure that you like the result of.
Its best to dry the cobs to the same RH as you would for say jar cured buds as this will halt any further change.
I do store my cobs in a dark place but thats just for security on my part but it cant hurt.
And just like wine maturing its an ongoing process over time.
In the case of cobs the moisture content is the key once cured its not needed.

I sent in a few samples for testing for both a regular jar cure and a cob cure and got some interesting results back. From the lab test we can see that THCA is converting to THC and the total THC content increased by almost 2%. I can also see that CBGA is converting to CBG.

I also sent one of the cobs to a friend who did a quick video on it and he is interested in doing a full review. See link from the 1 minute - 2 minutes or so YouTube Review (thought you guys might like this)

And 10lbs! WOW thats a lot of cobs but not if you have many friends ha ha.

As far as chewing goes a heavy smoker might need a gram to start with and even then it would depend on the strength of the pot used.
The high can feel subtle if your not used to it, its quite a different effect to smoking you dont get that BAM effect you get from smoking its more of a creeper effect like a sprint compared to a hike up a mountain ha ha.

The results are interesting thats for sure it would explain the natural de carb effect that seems to happen.
If you give chewing a go dont smoke at all that day to give it a chance to develop the high.
Please post a few close ups of the cobs they looked fantastic in the video.

The dark cures lose all of the taste and then smells a little like beef jerky. Lots of comments from people on how it looks like a turd. However it is some of the smoothest smoke I've ever had. Feedback is the high is very nice and rounded and there is some kind of difference between the Jar cure and even the lighter cure cobs but no one can explain it yet.

The lighter cob cures defiantly preserve the terpenes and the even lighter colored one almost concentrates the terpenes. When you open the bag your eyes almost start watering from the super strong pepper and citrus. It is a little harsher on the throat but still way smoother than the jar cure.

These cob joints also burn for an eternity and if you coat them is distillate and sprinkle some keif on them....the thing burns for hours and takes you to the moon.

One of my greatest loves in life is the aroma that you enjoy on opening those bags.
The perfume evolves and matures after the bag has aired and you can learn a lot of what is happening by those aromas.
Welcome to an art that I am sure you are going to excel in.
I think all the fellow cobbers on this forum are as excited as I am to see where it leads. Its a whole new world on cobs brother.

Great looking cobs 🙌🏼 very exciting that you are enjoying the process and turning others onto the magic of fermented herb 😊

The dark cures are truly special and are my preferred method of fermenting. They are always super smooth and I find that depending on the variety, the smell is greatly enhanced by letting them cure darker. With my Peruvian like this one I just opened this week, the scent of chocolate becomes even more pronounced once the dark cure has completed 😋

Thank you very much for the compliments! I'm really enjoying it for indicas even though it is less common for them to be used. Note, these are all a single strain of Bubba Kush. It is wild how much they have changed at each stage.

I can say for certain though that the husk wrapping doesn't do much besides change the outer texture. I can't tell which one was wrapped or unwrapped when smoking at all. Although one

Up on deck next is making some tincture oil's. Then on the next batch of cobs I have some terpenes to play with. I was thinking of adding 1 or 2 drops to the bag during vacuum sealing and see if that changes the final product.

It is also a little harder to get people to try the darker cures as it is so different that what they are use too and they think it is a prank to get them to smoke dog poop : /

I will absolutely be trying this with a bunch of other strains. Next batch should be a Blueberry which I'm super excited to try, then a Wedding Cake and a Tom Ford Pink. Unfortunately I don't have any Sativa's lined up yet.

How long do you let your dark cures go for? The chocolate sounds amazing!

Why would you want to add terpenes though?? (And especially if your cobs are already your new preferred daily smoke)

Once you get the the growing and cobbing right, they will be fragrant enough. No extra perfume needed!

Very interested in your tincture experiments, though!!
Not only because I have a fair stash of midsy cobs myself, but also it could (should?) offer some real advantages compared to other extraction methods (easier, much less solvent needed, plus likely a superior final product). Both for the homegamer and at scale.
At least, I am myself more than tempted to try to tincture a pound of cob or two. But for the same amount of flower, no way. At least not at home.

Keep us updated! Also, I can attest to that both blueberry and blue dream cob heavenly well!

For my darker cures I let the harvested buds dry for 1-3 days (depending on ambient temperature and humidity). This way the buds are still pretty wet as that is what will allow the chlorophyll to break down faster. I also do my initial cook at 108f for 48 hours. After that I open the bag and let the herb dry for around a day or so, the reseal and let sit at 75-85f for 2 weeks. Then it they go into dark storage for a minimum of 3-6 months.

I also find that Indica varieties are greatly enhanced by this method and greatly enjoy Pakistani and Afghani kush types cured this way. Especially when eaten they are magical 🙌🏼

The beauty of this hobby is that we get to explore the different reactions from different strains. You inevitably will come across some varieties that smell even better once dark cured. The blueberry might be a good candidate as I had other Peruvians that smelled of pure blueberry and strawberry. I’m currently waiting to harvest a Egyptian x Peruvian that smells almost identical to the Blueberry/Strawberry mother 🥰 When she was dark cured her blueberry scent morphed into a delicious creamy berry with notes of tobacco and black pepper 😋

Wow - lots to catch up on!!!! A whole pile of great looking cobs!!! Just posting to back on the notifications.
I have a plant of undetermined origin that I will be cobbing soon. One plant got trashed because of Bud Rot and these two have had just a spot here and there so I will be giving them a good going over at trim and wash.

Oh - I should mention that I also have 4 Mulanje that are rapidly squeezing me out of the greenhouse!!! They won't be ready for about a month...I can hardly wait!!! :whee: These gals got quadlined but are still over 7 feet and they are in 55 litre buckets!!!
I’m glad I’m not the only one getting squeezed out the greenhouse 😅 Every time I plant Africans in the greenhouse they always end up squeezing me out 😆 I prune, pinch back, and tie them down but they always end up a giant jungle of slender and bendy branches loaded with heavy and delicious buds. Towards the end I have to crawl on my hands and knees to water 🥰
Glad to read you will be enjoying some nice Malawi soon. Good homegrown Mulanje is always special 🙌🏼
