Malawi Style Cob Curing.

Hi everybody :smoke:
Very sorry to be that guy, but
@Whokaers
Why would you want to add terpenes though?? (And especially if your cobs are already your new preferred daily smoke)

Once you get the the growing and cobbing right, they will be fragrant enough. No extra perfume needed!

Very interested in your tincture experiments, though!!
Not only because I have a fair stash of midsy cobs myself, but also it could (should?) offer some real advantages compared to other extraction methods (easier, much less solvent needed, plus likely a superior final product). Both for the homegamer and at scale.
At least, I am myself more than tempted to try to tincture a pound of cob or two. But for the same amount of flower, no way. At least not at home.

Keep us updated! Also, I can attest to that both blueberry and blue dream cob heavenly well!

I just wanted to try something different. Someone gave me a bunch of free terpene samples and I have lots of cob to play with.

I could actually do a few different extractions. Maybe some cob bubble hash or a honey oil? I'm open to suggestions! I would prefer something that would be full spectrum and not a distillate.

Now you got me really excited for the blueberry!!

For my darker cures I let the harvested buds dry for 1-3 days (depending on ambient temperature and humidity). This way the buds are still pretty wet as that is what will allow the chlorophyll to break down faster. I also do my initial cook at 108f for 48 hours. After that I open the bag and let the herb dry for around a day or so, the reseal and let sit at 75-85f for 2 weeks. Then it they go into dark storage for a minimum of 3-6 months.

I also find that Indica varieties are greatly enhanced by this method and greatly enjoy Pakistani and Afghani kush types cured this way. Especially when eaten they are magical 🙌🏼

The beauty of this hobby is that we get to explore the different reactions from different strains. You inevitably will come across some varieties that smell even better once dark cured. The blueberry might be a good candidate as I had other Peruvians that smelled of pure blueberry and strawberry. I’m currently waiting to harvest a Egyptian x Peruvian that smells almost identical to the Blueberry/Strawberry mother 🥰 When she was dark cured her blueberry scent morphed into a delicious creamy berry with notes of tobacco and black pepper 😋

Awesome, we are pretty much doing it the same way. 2 Day hang dry, cook at 104f for 48 hours, quick dry and then 2-3 weeks at 84F in the cobatron. They are at 4 almost 5 months aged now.

The lighter cure I let it hang dry for 8 days and do the same thing.

The Egyptian x Peruvian sounds amazing!

Now sweating for ~24h at 40°C.

Then idk yet 😜
Will now read further in this epic thread on how to proceed.

Any tips or pointers are appreciated 🙏🏼

Welcome to the world of the shaman my friend of African magic life will change for you soon.
This is what I would do.
After sweating dry the cob without opening the wrapper until the wrapper is dry.

Then seal the wrapped cob back up for a week. After a week open the bag and repeat the drying of the wrapped cob.

Do this weekly for 3 weeks vacuum sealing after each drying by then you should be getting a sweet fermented aroma. Unwrap and dry the cob without wrapper and dont forget to take pics.

This is just one method but you have to start somewhere.
Other members will have developed their own methods of curing thats the beauty of this art.
The magic comes from the care and understanding of the evolving cob. With experience you will be amazed at what you can produce.

What temp do I provide for the next week(s) fermenting?

Constant 30°C?

Thats great to hear, friend! Apologies if I was coming across as a bit of an ass (it was not my intentention, but I usually do  ).

For extractions, I am pretty much restricted to ethanol and isopropyl alcohol (but never tried it so far). But even with all the resources, it's still where I would start. (Or CO2, if available.) Might prove more efficient than flower even.

Water washing, I imagine, would suffer if the material is compacted, no?

As for the terpene samples, do you have them in the form of concentrated oils, or diluted in some way(like e.g for aromatherapy)?
Any way, I would happily use them to educate my nose, but only as aromatherapy, not into anything I smoke.

Hi again friends,
Inspired by recent discussions, why not join in with the science experiment myself, instead of just talking? :smoker:

I have been procrastinating it forever, so better get it started at least? @Whokaers, I am doing a small-scale improvised quiso, let’s see how it goes, shall we?
IMG_6877.jpeg

Killer A5 haze, from spring 2022

So I put the jar with the cobs in the freezer, where the isopropanol is cooling down, too. To be continued...

Edit: I am thinking this setup with 35 g of cob will allow a couple pulls with cold iso, and more (or warmer), depending on recovery. And it will hopefully be small enough to be doable here at home, too.

Go bro I used to do iso extractions on cobs in Africa back in my youth, we usually got 5 to 1 ratio 5g of ground up cob would make 1 gram of oil.
I have done a few since and get 4 or 5 to 1 ratio on my cobs. I am sure your cobs will give you a 4 or 5 gram to 1 gram of oil easily looking at them nice cure man.

The oil is super potent. I was addicted to a mix of oil and ground cob when I was in my late teens early twenties.
I carried a small jar of black tar like oil like opium just a smear on a cig paper with a bit of cob powder and then rolled up like a swiss roll.
A couple of hits was enough to send you into outer space. The Malawi grass we used to make it was like speed and the oil gave a very trippy high. We used to have big black empty holes for pupils it was very trippy.
I only managed to get off the stuff once I left Africa to live in England and couldn't get grass cheap enough anymore.
Well worth the time to make it but be careful its very addictive and hard to give up. I know I was hooked on it for a number of years, its different to other oils no decarbing needed.

Give it a go you will love it I'm sure if you like cobs ha ha.
Please post your results and any thoughts on its effects and pics of the amber oil. I still get flash backs just thinking about it good times they were.

Haha no apologies needed!

We have a small short path distiller coming next week and maybe a c02 extractor in the next few months to play with. For now I have some Ethanol, Iso and Everclear.

I have no idea how water washing would effect the compacted material....only one way to find out!

The terpenes samples are from TrueTerpenes. They are concentrated and soluble in oil. It is very strong and does need to be diluted before using. I was going to put a single drop in the far corner of the bag and then try vacuum sealing it in.

This reminds me of my time in Peru. I had made contact with a local herbsman who had access to local jungle herb. It was compressed and stored away so the color was golden/brown and full of seeds. This is where I collected my Peruvian heirloom. The smoke was high vibe, psychedelic, with no ceiling. Soon after, I met an older Italian gentleman who was using similar (if not the same) jungle bud to make hash oil, using locally grown cane sugar ethanol. He gave me a huge jar of it and once I dipped the joints in that oil it was like pure electricity ⚡️ the first few times I used the oil it was so strong I could barely stand up. 😵‍💫

Its easy to overdose on oil I used to put a pin head size dab on my tongue but I always ended up crawling on the floor so I gave up and stuck to smoking it ha ha.

Hey @Tangwena . I just found this thread. Its amazing. Im going back and start reading from the beginning. This process could make weed like wine with every year being a different vintage. Very facinating! 😁

I tried eating some of that oil and also decided it was best to stick to smoking it. Eating it would lay me out too easily. 😅

I was just thinking about this the other day! I haven't experienced oil ingestion much, but I really am considering it from now on, because I do have a weak heart and smoking should never be an option for me as I am few years over 40 now.

So I was thinking in order to avoid getting knocked out by the oil, I could maybe dilute it in any medium that is good for the job, like alcohol. And then, take a far lower dose. Like putting a drop of oil in, let's say 10ml of alcohol, shake it and mix it, then ingest maybe 1ml of that alcohol. This way, you can basically ingest the amount of oil that is in one drop divided by 10 (in this case), or by 20, or by any number you so choose.

Well Cobsters, my Cobodysee continues...
It starts with from a plant from unknown origins - I think it is a hybred of Super Stinky auto and Blue Cheese, but who knows - plus I harvested early because of hints of bud rot, so... I took a hit or two in my One hitter and it works!!!:whee:
Here is my Cobmografier, powered by a retile tank heating pad...
DSC06057.JPG

and here is the set up, the Curator on the left back is a Crock pot I found in a Walmart parking lot 5 years ago... it will do the 7 day cure at 30 C, in the front is the little stand to hold the stems so that clipping of the buds is easier, and the 3/4" pipe for forming the cob. And of course the 5 cobs drying a bit before the cure.
DSC06059.JPG

and then a close up of a cob - they average about 2.5" x 3/4"....
DSC06062.JPG

I will mention that I am a bit nervous in that this is from a piddly little plant, 5 cobs - I have one more identical plant, two more Blue Cheese that are at least 6 times bigger and then 4 Mulanje Gold that are huge. I hope I have not jinxed anything - I am "touching wood" as I type!!! :good:
For all you outdoor growers - I hope your season is wrapping up nicely!!!!
