Mac vs. PC - the great debate

Also a small fact that the MAC guys might not have noticed....

There are only a number of companies that make hardware stout enough to be considered for OEM hardware. Apple does NOT MAKE hardware, they pick and choose from the same pool of resources as everyone else. The apple machine has an aesthetic edge and a different OS, that....is....IT. You will find an Apple and PC share the same brands of equipment.

OH NO! Run MAC GUYS! Your machine is using the same hardware as those poor PC users! IIIIICCCCKKKIIIESS! Get the poopy PC cooties off! EWW! .....but at least you got to pay 3x the premium for it! So you're still special.

Trees: you gotta realize - saying "all the world hates mac users" and generalizing is just gonna hurt your argument. I am a pc person, for many reasons, but mac is popular, so when u generalize about the type of ppl who are mac users, you make urself look kinda petty. I agree, they are mostly self-righteous types who pay 2 much for coffee and look down on pc users - and I agree that you dont see pc users often bothering mac users to switch to pc - because mac users are often too thick-headed and dont want to really learn how a computer works.

MAC pros: Looks cool (sometimes), Usually reliable, good warranty support, gets other yuppies&simpletons to approve of you
MAC cons: $$$ LEWT $$$ always at least 50% more markup for hardware due to logo, Limited software - exponentially less software available (many programs still wont run fast enough to be usable even dual booting a mac), approval of yuppies&simpletons, you never get to learn how to really work on/improve/truely run your bx, you will always be at the whim of apple's UI, limited peripherals: much lab gear, electronics test rigs, commercial digital equipment WILL NOT WORK WITH MACS - they are a consumer only product imho, even though the mac ppl say "its better for graphics" - that is bs, most commercial studios use MUCH more powerful pc based rendering servers etc - MAC even gets a thumbs down from the GFX industry (only pc ppl dont seem to brag as much about their hardware to MAC ppl)

For me, the cons outweigh the pros, for others, this is not the case. They arent all assholes, they are just mostly all afraid of technology or too impatient to figure things out on a complex machine.

Apple used to make their gear here, which was another pro, but now they have few american employees and have china do most the manu and therefore I had to take it off the pros list.

I use many programs that don't run on Macs..

Macs cost too much..

I need atleast 3 monitors. Mac monitors are way too expensive and im not doing graphic design...

And i have never had problems with my PC..not ever! If you know how to use a computer at all you should never have problems. Who gives a shit about viruses ? I have 2 anti-virus programs running and i don't download anything that i don't scan first.

And this biaatch is fast as shit!

And never got that Mac look and image thing. IMO they look like toys. And the image of Mac users. That's enough to turn you off...

Hey any you guys mind running metatrader and see if it works for you ? My friend wanted to use it and said he could not cause he had a mac. I looked for a soulution but the stuff i found was just too much effort.

You can hook any monitor up to mac as long as it has modern day cabling and connections.

As for metatrader, sounds like a perfect use of VM to me. IMO.

My son is in the computer repair business. Those of you that are smart guys that keep your machines tuned up and your anti-virus up to date are in the extreme minority.

But why do you all feel the need to constantly do that sort of maintenance? It's just further proof that the OS is inferior.

I just recently switched from PC to MacBook Pro and an iPhone and I am amazed at how easily and intuitively all of the Apple equipment works. I highly recommend it and I will not be switching back. Apple...It just works!

I've built my own PCs for years. I don't do any sort of constant maintenance. At most, I need a once every 3-4 month defrag, and that's got nothing to do with Mac/PC. I've got more computing power (CPU and GPU) than most people, and I put it together for $2000, at most. I'd have to spend a HELL of a lot more to get a comparable Mac.

In fact... I just tried to go build a MacPro... but I can't. They don't offer any hard drives over 7200rpm, and no SSD choices at all. So there's no way to compare to mine... Graphics cards... pretty fuckin limited options...

Half of the configuring is for software... Oh well, I'm at $2750 for an inferior machine. And that's all it is... a machine. Maybe this should've been an OSX vs Windows thread, because Apple blows as far as hardware options go.

But you don't find it odd that Microsoft rips apple off every chance they get???

LOL

its kinda like shady breeders selling nock offs

Microsoft is a shady breeder

Yes, M.S. is VERY shady. I hate them sometimes but still find myself using there products. I think it is because it is what I am used to. And yes it is true Apple charges soooo much more money for the same hardware.

So user upgrade it. It's just as easy as any other tower. But really... If you love your Microsoft products that much, stick with it... That's why there are 300 types of chips in the snack aisle, everyone does not like exactly the same things, and some people cannot afford the gourmet snacks.

You are full of BS. anyone can build a pc. I've always built my gaming rigs.

But your comment that "They don't offer any hard drives over 7200rpm, and no SSD choices at all" demonstrates that you don't know at all, WTF you are talking about.

Apple doesn't make their HD or SSD drives, and neither do any of the PC manufacturers. But changing drives, either in a mac or macbook couldn't be easier and if it's a standard drive it fits and works. Even SSD's.
I tire of dealing with the uniformed.

Maybe people would take you more seriously if you weren't being such an insufferable prick to everyone with a different opinion. :tiphat:

I find that most people I know who have bought a MAC did so due to the hype and all have buyers remorse after. MACs are for the technically challenged who take the short bus to school and follow others like a sheep. I would not use a MAC even if it was free.. honest.

h3ad - Where have I professed my love for Microsoft? There's two different things at hand here... hardware, and software. Sure, I could definitely buy a MacPro and then upgrade the components... but are you really telling me I should buy parts that I don't want just so I can get a Mac? That's an even bigger waste of money, it would definitely end up costing at least twice as much if you went that route. (I wouldn't agree with the previous statements of PCs being 25% the cost of Macs.)

grapeman - I never said Apple made any of their hardware, I just went to Apple's site and tried to put together a computer that would match my own... Are we talking about Apple computers here, or do you want to start getting into the hackintosh discussion? Because then you're just admitting Apple's shitty choices for hardware.

A mac pro has 4 hdd bays and 2 optical drive bays. surely you could easily add (not replace) an ssd or super fast sata drive for performance while using the 2tb hdd for archiving and backups, right?

My PC runs great, never had a problem for the past 3 years of having it. Hardly do any maintenance to keep it running just the way it did when I bought it.

Macs have a catchy design, but I'm a PC guy and will probably never go Mac. If I had problems with my PC then I might think about it, but I haven't had a single problem and don't foresee that happening.

Yeah, you could do that, but if I'm going to buy a 2tb hard drive, I'd rather not pay the ridiculously inflated price that Apple charges for their hardware options. But yes, you could do what you said.

And it's not about affording it... like I said, my PC cost $2k+, so it's not like I couldn't afford a Mac if I wanted one. It's more about value... if I spent that same amount of money on a Mac instead of a DIY PC, I would've gotten much less for my money. Even if I had to buy a prebuilt from Apple or some PC manufacturer, I would choose PC. As mentioned before, I would most likely format and reinstall Windows the second I got it, but I would still choose PC over Mac, because you don't have to pay Apple Logo Tax, so I could get a better machine for my money.

While increasing the cost of your initial purchase. Does Jobs even allow you to add new hardware with out breaking some retarded clause and voiding your warranty.

http://www.mac-sucks.com/switch_why.php
Increasing the cost of your initial purchase and increasing the capabilities of your machine. If cost is your main concern, get a PC for 65 - 75% of what a mac costs. I think the biggest market for the Dell mini9 was the hackintosh crowd. The mini 9/10 run are perfectly OSx compatible. I've actually thought of getting one for that purpose. $400 iNetbook =].

apple cannot void your warrantee for replacing or adding user serviceable parts... why would anyone buy a tower they could not open?

There are 4 macs in my house and one pc. The PC sits and collects dust, and I'll never buy another one unless apple, according to my estimation, drops the ball. I will usually check out the latest windows build via bootcamp just to see what they're doing, but see no reason as of yet to bother with a dedicated windows machine.

With that being said... No camera and no flash support on the iPad is a fail, imho. I would not bother with purchasing until iPad's 2nd generation.

value is in the eye of the beholder, eh?

My son dropped his 4 month old macbook, pretty hard.
The case got warped a little and the top did not line up. We hopped in the car, drove to the apple store, and showed them the misalignment. They went into the back, put his hdd into a new machine, came out front swapped over the serial number registration and gave him his new macbook, no charge.

When my wife's battery failed to hold a full charge after a year and a half of macbook pro ownership, I called Apple and there was a brand new battery + return prepaid shipping label on my doorstep the next day. No charge.

I dropped my iPod Touch from a 2nd floor balcony. one tiny dent in the back of the case but in perfect working order to this day.

My PC toting friends have been through two laptops during the time period we've had the macbook i'm on right now.

I like the OS. I like being able to plug any camera or printer or drive in without ever having to install any drivers. I think Apple is a good value over the long run, at least mine have worked out to be.
