OMFG...I almost rolled outta my seat.

So the V-man is on it also....good good~

I'm a scoop/handful guy now as well...measuring went out the window a while ago....once you've measured enough....it's pretty easy to see what 1 or 2 cups of anything looks like.

Your moms new BF sounds cool...can we come over for dinner?

Ya come on over. My mom and your mom .......mmmmmmmmm we could make a video. lmao

That's the point I'm at as well....just don't need it now that the soil is well...real soil.
I will replace the crab shell and neem about every other re-amend or more....for the bad bugs ya know.
That's more than enough Calcium but try and keep that a secret, okay?

The little tykes at Portland's finest grow stores are suffering enough. Seriously, the manager of Rome's place told me that Cal-Mag Lockout accounts for at least 33% of their gross.

Heh......

About half - maybe. Depends on if they give you the 'good dude discount' which lately is pretty much SOP - 15 - 20%

Then again you have 25+ hydro stores to peruse for your shopping adventure

What about lobster shells? I get a lot of those. Just ate 2 of them. Delicious.

I like drying them and using them the same as as crab meal. I tried drying them on the grill last time, as it was too hot to turn the oven on in the house, and they got charred. Lobster biochar?

Most shells from the ocean (maybe all) are Calcium Carbonate CaCO3 just like egg shells and that's because factory chickens are fed oyster shell powder (for over 100 years) to give the shell enough harness to ship to wherever.

Lobster, Crab and Shrimp are Calcium Carbonate but what separates these shells specifically from the rest is that they contain Chitin (as in Chitosan) and Gascanacan can explain why you'd want that polysaccharide in your soil mix.

Since you're reading and working through Gil Carandang's formulas, take a look at the Calcium Phosphate one in particular. Obviously from the name this new compound you're creating with the charring of the egg shells contains Calcium but where does the Phosphate come from?

The same eggs shells - almost every Calcium Carbonate is listed at 96% so there's another 4% of 'something' and 2.9% is Phosphorus - hence Calcium Phosphate

Meaning that you could take your lobster shells and use them in place of the egg shells in Gil's recipe/formula.

See the connection? No mystery at all......

Sweet. More excuse to get cheap lobster. The calcium phosphate spray I get from the shells makes the whole price worth it, even if I wasn't eating the meat lol.

I make it a point to buy as many fruits, nuts, and veggies that require peeling as I can. I figure it is cheaper to buy pistachios shell on for example, plus I get a valuable source of nutrition for my soil/plants.

I have a cantaloupe bio-nutrient brewing now, cantaloupe seeds and rind pureed in water with an immersion blender and LAB and BIM added, let to brew until fermentation stops. I have an airlock on the jug to monitor fermentation. I will use the liquid as a foliar and put the tailings into my mulch bin, which is really turned itself into a bokashi bin, but I still mulch with it. I also threw the lobster scraps in there whole, I didn't bother drying them out as I figure it should add humus.

Hey CC, earlier in the thread you mentioned not being that familiar with seed bank named strains. Would you mind telling us what you run?

Edit: On the topic of chitin my soil gets a portion of mealworm frass. It's high in chitin, works as a pesticide, and from what I've heard is super-high in microbial activity. I need to dig around more on that last topic, but it does seem likely given the way it seems to suppress fungal gnats.
