Lets Build a Clone Machine *Step by Step*

Rumple, a friend of mine told me I need to cool the water and only run the pump when the lights are on.
What are your thoughts on that?

Not to be a dick Bubba but did you read the thread? Japanfreakier said something about 15 minute on/off increments and he told him he should feel free to start a thread on that and he's sure plenty of people would agree with him. He (Rumbleforeskin) thinks you should leave the pump on 24 hours a day but is willing to acknowledge other methods may work.

Bubba, Regarding what your friend said, if you are having a problem with high temps in your water then I'd recommend the 15 minute on/off that Japan was talking about. Plenty of people in the ezclone thread have said they use that. I have as well and have not noticed any negatives as a result, just cooler water temps. I have no experience with leaving the pump off for hours as your friend is indicating but I have read as many threads as I could get my eyes on regarding aero cloning and nobody has said in any of them to leave the pump off while the lights are off. Let us know if you try it and have success.

Sorry to chime in on your behalf without permission Rumple, nice tutorial. I have an ez-clone, but if I hadn't spent the cash on that I'd surely be considering your design. Very clean and what an easy to follow thread. Members like yourself are highly valuable, welcome aboard! K+

I like the water a bit warm (80 to 85 degrees) for making clones. If it goes above 85 then your clone room is just too hot. Work on your ventilation rather then a quick fix of ice.

Turning your pump off when your lights are off? When are your lights off? Ok, some folks clone using 18/6 light schedule (I am not one of them). Leaving your pump off with the lights will kill your clones.
Best bet is to leave the lights on and never turn off your pump.
Keep it simple and it will work great for ya.

While I use a bubbler rather than Aero, I found water temps below 70ºF to be death. I shoot for 75º-80ºF.

As to light, clones need very little if any at all. JapanFreaker either did, or talked someone else into doing, a clone session in complete darkness with successful results. Personally, I use a 23 watt cfl.

I use a 11 watt cfl about 18" above my cuts with temps averaging 78-81 and I'll get roots to pop in 6-8 days.

Just a reminder, even in aero-cloners, unless you're worried about plant numbers, it's always a good idea to make at least twice as many clones as you need. If you make 20 you'll see a difference if you keep an eye on them. Why make 6 when you can make 12 using the same floor space? For this reason I suggest people make clone machines with more spots than they need, a lot more if they can.

Rumple, it's nice to see you sharing your wealth of knowledge in this forum. As I have said in other forums you are the benchmark for the DIY information threads.

Your opinions and presentation of growing styles is on a professional level and very informative and have been of great value to many who cultivate our favorite plant. Anyone following your advice will be well educated and informed.

I have successfully rooted up to three clones at a time in one neoprene plug with this system, easily doubling or tripling the capacity of the plugs in the lid.
