Jar curing

Those are 5 gallon Gamma Lids. You can get smaller lids to fit the small 2 gallon pails. Next day delivery from Amazon. :)

Prepers have been using them for a while to store beans and such for long term storage.

How about something like this.... https://www.amazon.com/FoodSaver-T0...+lids+wide+mouth+vacuum&qid=1582473886&sr=8-4

It uses the standard 2-piece lids that come on the Ball jars. And, it creates a decent vacuum (according to reviews). Pretty cheap upgrade if you are already using jars (as many of us are).

Anyone ever use anything like this?

This little vac pump does a pretty good job on jars. It's not as good as the big a/c vacuum pump but it works and it's easy. Cheep too.

I found bucket sizes vary enough to make gamma lids not fit tight enough . Between home de pot, target, and Kmart, white kmart ones were the best, at least six years ago.

Climate humidity here is 20-45%. Took about six months for it to be an issue, usually don’t keep it around that long. Ended up caulking some of the seals and eventually just use the buckets for dry amendment storage. Trying Mylar this year for everything, the short term storage as well as trying a few for a few years to see how it performs.

I am. Same thing I showed in post #70 this thread. Works good. Also works well with the little food saver pump.

does it works if i let jar lid off and then vacuum it in the bag? i think that vacuum sealer sucks all air from the jar. not sure haha. maybe it is just better to keep lids on.

You can vacuum seal bags but it crushes the buds. Jars don't.

When you vac seal the jars, the threaded band is off and just the lid seals. Then the threaded band keeps it in place.

Uline! Best fit. Tried em all. Gotta order 5 or more, though.. :/

Usplastic has the most .. usefully shaped buckets, if taller and narrower tickles your fancy. It does mine.

The other day my barometer showed 1030 hPa, and today it was below 975 hPa. I bet a sealed empty jar would have made a small pop.
Who has stable air pressure outside their jars?

Combined with small temperature changes, it would be a miracle to hit the same pressure?

it's not just about burping them, it's about removing that air, letting fresh air in, and having that fresh air touch as much surface as possible

I pop the lid, put it back on and shake/stir the buds around, then open it and let it sit for 20 minutes, put the lid back on for another shake/stir then pop the lid once more before closing it up, I do it twice a day at first

what you don't want are buds that stay clumped in the bottom of the jar or that don't roll around somewhat freely

I am totally doing that wrong then. Thx. I will try that on the next run.

And I really don't know anymore about what is outgassing than post #1. Water/moisture doesn't make any sense.

I gently roll my jars all the time to break up the clump. Otherwise all the buds clump together. Sometimes they get stuck and I give them a good shake to loosen them up. Sure a few trichs fall off. WTF, I have plenty. LOL

I love playing with my pot. Sometimes, I take them all out of the jars and sort them again. And, then put them back into the jars. LOL After all, it is a hobby. Gotta play a little. LOL

Sticky lid mystery solved

Sticky lid mystery solved

I wanted to get high dammit so I drug out the press and squished up some "Queens Candy" which is the fueliest strongest smelling stuff I've seen yet. The jar I got it from had a kinda sticky lid and sure enough the red rubber band is full of whatever that chem terp smell is, with plenty of heads packed onto it.

I made a gram of 190* rosin from it. The smell on that lid was stronger than the rosin. So sticky lids is probably the goods coming off when we play with our toys, and getting pressed into the rubber when the top is put back on IMO. I loosely shake the toys when burping myself, but never 20 mins of full exposure.

As for the mission... I put the rosin on a big spoon, heated it from below, mixed it with some of the loose shake from the jar, and made a reefer by stuffing a tube. Got 3 hits and the job is done.

Lungs hate me now.

Here is a nice rosin tip.....

190F is a tiny bit hot. Try pressing at about 170F. It will be a little less sticky and a little more waxy (usually).

And, for god's sake, buy a decent rosin vape. No wonder your throat hurts. I use a Motar and I set it at a nice 15W and I get a nice cool (relatively) but very beefy hit. If you overheat rosin, not only does it taste like shit. But, it does make you (well, me) cough.

The Motar and a mod box is under $50 and the Terp Pen is under $25 and makes GREAT vape for rosin. Are you in the USA? I can direct you and help with a discount.

Rosin is the easiest thing on my throat of all the ways I do pot.

Thanks Mr. Ringodoggie. Throat is OK, but Lungs don't like the waxy thick compounds - I didn't winterize. One thing I also do is trim off the edge of the puck where the oil is and that trim goes in the mix too.

I like your rig for vaping that has the waterpipe in line. In theory, my ideal would be winterized rosin in a rig like that, heated at around 440. I don't do rosin often - this was a what the hell deal. My lungs were feeling too good not to mess with them.

Ten pages later, I was going to guess vapor pressure. Don't know co2 or water or both, the buds have a high surface area for evaporation. If you had a really large container like 50+ gallon glass jug and evaporated, or boiled enough water to raise the humidity in the jar but the liquid water was gone, I think a relatively small lid or screw cap would allow you to hear or sample the atmospheric change between the two environments like a (baro)meter. Much higher surface area than half a jar of water, all the bud acts like a sponge or pressure gradient in one way or another. Silica, like the 62% packs, they likely have a drying capacity. Like one small pack is made for keeping an ounce stable, or enough to dry one gram, something like that. Meaning a new 62% pack will saturate with moisture and not work if you put one in with a pound of herb. If the herb is super crispy dry then it will remove the moisture from the silica and the jar will still remain lower than 62. If the herb is 62% exactly when it goes in with the silica pack then the size or the amount of silica required is less. If it is made for keeping 3.5 grams within 10% relative humidity then it will not do a very good job with a bunch of bud which has yet to completely dry.

Anyway your rosin sounds more interesting. Talking about vapor pressure when all we all want is Queens Candy :)

Well, I am impressed.

I received my jar sealer today and I am totally impressed (so far). The unit was only $9.99 but it does not come with the air hose (or the vacuum). The hose comes with the vacuum sealer when you buy it (so I read). Fortunately, the hose that came with my ZIPLOK brand sealer fit perfectly. It's just a slightly tapered plastic fitting attached to a 1/8" air hose. One end goes into the cap sealer and the other fits in the vacuum unit. You can buy the cap sealer with a small vac for about $25.

First try, the jar sealed perfectly. I tested an empty jar just in case my unit had too much vacuum and burst the jar. It didn't. I could pry the lid off after but it was a little difficult and gave a definitely sucking sound when it popped off.

I sealed a handful of jars with hygrometers in them, next to some un-vacuumed jars. I'll check them later to see if the vacuum is still there. No reason it shouldn't be???

If you want to seal your jars on the cheap.... 5 stars on this baby from me.

Just FYI

I've got stuff two and three years old that I sealed with the beast vacuum pump. It's still great. I use the little pump for the stash and consumption jars. If you decide to go big, eBay or Harbor Freight 50 bucks. The lids go on so tight you need a tool to pry the lids and release the vacuum.
