Jar curing

AgentPothead

Just this guy, ya know?
I had a new batch of Mason jars that popped really bad when I unscrewed the lid to run everything through the dishwasher. I figured it was the pressure difference since I live by Denver nearer to the mountains. The jars must have been made in some factory at sea level. I guess those jars seal really good?
Something like that, yes that can make a difference. But once they are jarred up with product, they shouldn't be puffing up. The jars are hermetically seal when used for canning, ie putting stuff in them while in boiling water, closing the lid, and letting it cool down. That creates it's own vacuum by the air in the jar taking up less space, because as it cools down it contracts, opposite of it expanding while it was being heated earlier. I wouldn't recommend boiling your weed though, even if it's in a glass jar. But hey who knows maybe it's awesome. If I had enough laying around that I could just sacrifice a jar, I might give it a shot actually "canning" the weed.

You might be on to something there. A jar can be heated in an oven at say 160*F, then removed and while hot material put in and the jar quickly closed. Terps will wanna fly but if the jar is sealed as soon as the material is put in, they can't go anywhere but condense on the jar or back on the material. As the jar cools it will start to pull a slight vacuum (PV=nRT), that should also want the terps to have more vapor.

So what happens now with the out-gassing that normally takes place from decarb? Does the pressure of carbon dioxide gas forming counteract the vacuum from the jar cooling?

Jar science...

You could also just pull a vacuum on your jars in a chamber, and the lids will seal shut hard enough to open the chamber up and screw the lids on.

I wouldn't heat my weed under any circumstance like dat.

Psssst: (I hadabuzz and washavinfun)

Only heat my stuff sees is in the chamber or a tube. I suppose whatever process is making the gas will finish eventually.

Do packs start to gas up if left in the same conditions as the jars (cool and dark)? I've never left one alone to find out.

I keep it like food. 62% and vacuum sealed jars kept in the dark. Iv got some good vintage.

If a jar gets pressurized I think there are only two possibilities.
The jar was sealed at a cool temperature and warmed up.
Or
Something is growing in there. Similar to yeast eating sugar in fermentation.

The yeast is pissing alcohol while farting the CO2 like when making wine? Who knows, maybe that's why I cough - I must heat up the piss to evap temp.

I thought this burping was supposed to happen.

My understanding is that the moisture in the core of the bud is evening out and the burps replace the air. Too much above 62 and bad things happen. I have several hygrometers and some of them are off. It's a good practice to verify.

... yup! When in doubt check them out :) Great tip  While 80% of my jars last run were showing anywhere from 55 to 65% (65 = one jar) I subbed one low reading hygro with the "65" one. Both after a period (under 30 min), return to reading as they did previously. Check! That is the easiest way to check things IMO. That particular jar (1l) had my 2 beefiest colas. The remaining jars were 2l, and the other "spill over jar" (1l) contained a different strain (Aca vs Har). That particular jar was stable.

If the hygrometers are good and there are differences in jars, sometimes I'll mix a couple jars to even it out. That is if they are the same strain.

The bigger buds take allot longer.

I can appreciate the whole glass>plastic argument, but I could only tolerate jars the one time.

Burping 16 jars per lb multiple times a day is a fuckin chore.

I've got pairs of 2, 5, and 7 gallon gamma seal buckets accounting for 28 gallons of airtight storage with only 6 lids to burp.

I like the little 4 oz and 8 oz jars for presentation..?

I use my 24 quart jars for tons of various other dirty jobs around the house, but those things are too cumbersome to only hold an ounce of my indoh.

I didn't want to disturb the trichs nor the "natural" fall in the jar process, but great tip :tiphat: Filed away in RAM

I use the 1/2 gallon jars and only put 1 ounce per jar. With buds, that's about half full. With popcorn, a little less than half.

10 jars per filing cabinet drawer. I have 8 2-drawer files lined up in the basement and it makes a great work table as well as holding all my weed.

Each jar has a hygrometer.

I burp daily in the beginning and get a ton of pressure release. As time goes on I burp less and pop decreases.

After a couple months, I only open occasionally to check for mold or to refill my local stash. Once I left a group of jar lids opened to long and it got too dry. In those cases, I add a 62 Boveda and hope for the best. It re-hydrates but never gets that great smell or feel back.

It takes almost a qp to stuff a quart jar full. Key word being stuff.
... and you are wondering why you are having problems? 1oz per litre/quart, loosely packed for the cure. You can reduce the air space after the buds have cured. Basically a 1l/qt jar can reasonably hold 2oz, 7, now that is a stretch!!!

7 ounces? In a wide mouth mason jar? Are you growing rocks?! I don't think I've ever gotten more than 2 ounces into a wide mouth quart mason jar and that was the gorilla glue which tends to be denser than my other plants.

I guess I'll never understand. Still think you are a bunch of goofies with all those f'n jars.

I'd be lying if I said the perceived redundancy didn't annoy me somewhere deep down, real bad, as if I was the one who was going to have to lug them around.

Math isn't the strong hand around here, is it? 16/4 is never 7. I could fill the jars less densely, but as-is now the flowers are looser than when they were vac-packed.

I didn't think there were problems, and Mr. Ringodoggie describes the same experience as me with his cures, so all I asked is what is going on. Is this CO2 from decarb, and I suppose it is. Not the 250* for 30 mins decarb, but there is gas being made. I do this with a 62 % pack in there also.

Don't some people do this in nitrogen?

Your pot could be winning the battle that’s being fought with the microorganisms. It certainly has the capacity.

If you took it all down to 55-58%.. I don’t think it’d be happening.

Again tho.. personally, you’d have to show me a temperature and humidity log for be to believe what you’re saying 100%. I couldn’t tell you jack without my loggers. My loggers give real-time readings, while those caliberiv’s can take a whole day to stabilize and get a true reading, which is certainly enough time to give any anaerobic bacteria a good head start.

With what we’ve got available today, I’d say those caliber 4’s belong in the scrap pile.

Before I got my loggers, I thought all my shit was gravy, too.

Even if you did decarb a whole jars worth.. in a jar.. I don’t think it’d create enough pressure to make more than one or two good “pop’s”. Or if you evaporated a whole bottle of terpene.. it’d still only create enough for a pop er two..
