I've Never Had A Job ...

OP is there something you really love doing besides growing?
If so,, make a little gig out of it. Sure you may make nothing, or you may make some change. BUT, its a " legit" gig. And in the meantime, do what you do. I say this cause maybe it will make that feeling you have go away when doing something else that you love.

peace.

all my advice was based on the assumption OP wanted a job.

if yer happy OP just keep hustling and playin those drums. you're right that some folks that foowed the career path are just as fucked as some of those who didn't.

but don't assume cause I was workin in high school and college that I wasn't hustling and enjoying a healthy social life. :joint:

Bad or good? In who's eyes? Are you happy?

25? College degree in Sociology? No employment history? I hate to break it to you but that BA is worthless unless you're interested in becoming a social worker (shit pay for the cases they handle) or a PO or something similar.

How's your credit? Good? Bad?

Job market is pretty tough for new graduates. Look at the unemployment rate among new graduates and the general pop. and you'll see. Nobody really cares that you have a degree (so do 8 thousand other people). You lack experience, which is tough, but it is what it is. That's why someone suggested doing an unpaid internship - gets your foot in the door. And you go from there.

Starting from the bottom (no experience/no relevant work experience) is hard. Wait until you start looking for a job, and nobody gets back to you. Then things get really disheartening.

And you may have to brown nose a bit. Suck some dick to get something. That's just the way it is. I see retarded people I went to school with get halfway decent jobs and I just scratch my heads. And then I realize the only reason they got that job was because they're uncle's brother works there and hooked them up. What that means is that retarded people have a leg up on you just because they know so and so, and so and so put in a good word, etc. Again, that's just the way it is.

Someone mentioned diversify. That'd be the whole point of getting a job. Legit income. How long can you sustain 100% illegal income? What about benefits? That's a plus. Do you have health insurance? Makes sense to bust your ass just to get health insurance. When you're young, you're invincible, but god forbid something happen. Then you'll be up to your neck in hospital bills.

Keep on track of your finances/taxes. Your assets/expenses don't match up with declared income? Someone looks into it more thoroughly...?

Other option is doing a trade - heavy machinery, diesel mechanic, etc. (which is good pay, but requires further training/certs, etc)

Bottom line is: the longer you wait to get a job, the harder it is going to be.

But my best advice to you is to go to a temp agency/head hunting firm and try and setup an appointment and go from there. Depending on how well you do temp jobs often can lead to full time jobs.

so you studied sociology and yet have no clue as to whether having a job is good or bad.
and you want to make a living off playing drums...

basically, you did not learn anything at school.

keep on doing the easy stuff, the 'job-world' will eat you alive.

peace

being a PO would be easy as shit! too bad i hate them... But you are somewhat confirming what i already suspect; it would be tough for me to get a high $ job even if i wanted one.

my credit is on the shitty side of nonexistent, never had a credit card, never wanted one. I figure i just need a girl with good credit who can get loans and credit cards for me in her name.

i never said i have no clue, i have my own opinions and i am interested in others as well. obviously i am doing what i want to be doing for the most part, but ideally i would be making money by playing/producing music, then growing could become just a hobby.

but you are right i didn't learn much in school , except that i don't like school.

That's pretty much my thoughts on the matter. I have a few friends with cool jobs, but mostly people just take what they can get these days cuz they need the $$$. since i've always made money without having a job i don't see the reason to pursue employment unless something sweet falls in my lap.

Thanks, my first time here on toker's den, not in icmag, the thing is all i've ever done here was geeking for info on grower's subforum, wich helped me a lot, now its time to retribute.

Where i live, it has a rly bad social service, and you wont get that much money later even if you pay high taxes, i might as well follow some tips here, of starting some long term savings, be prepared for the worse.

Explore the things you like to do, like working in horticulture or relative works.

You said you played drums, you could teach some kids to play if you're good, i'm just sayin' it's always easier to go for something that you already know you'll enjoy doing.

My buddy works at a music store, and gives lessons for guitar on the side for 40 bucks an hour cash.

Makes more money giving lessons then working hourly.

Ok, I'm not gonna tell you that you won't be able to do that; but I'm gonna tell you that to do that is pretty fucking hard.

making money off music is one of the hardest things out there; unless you are a good teacher (like already mentioned by someone else) and are able to have a steady flow of students. but teaching is also pretty hard and you have to be very dedicated to it.

I worked with music for a dozen years... out of which I worked at a pro recording studio for half of those years, the only one in a specific culturally important place; saw so many truly talented people go no-where... the only ones who still played and were able to afford to record at this studio were either backed-up by a big-label (the less talented ones) or people who had other professions and were able to afford it out of their own pockets and just did it for the love (the more talented ones).

good luck!

I know a guy thats has spent the last 30 some years living and working in Mexico. Now that he is nearing 60 he discovered he has no Social Security etc cause he didn't work in the U S. Now some may say thats not such a bad thing, you can hustle your ass of and if your not careful you wake up and your 60 something and don't have any retirement. Think about the future, yeah its hard to do when your 25, I used to think that way, then one day you wake up and the last 30 or 40 years has flown by like you won't believe. So just remember to put some aside for the future. Do I sound like some one old man well its only cause I found out how fast it all flies by.

Social Security? LoL. That won't exist by the time he's 65+

anyway, my suggestion is start your own business or buy into an established one that's for sale.

One of my sisters actually made a better living as a lounge singer than a teacher when she was living in Tokyo.

Start a small company/business. I can't tell you exactly what I started for security reasons but I own my own company. I sell products hand to hand and even wholesale to local shops where they retail them for me. It doesn't take much investment and even if you didn't have many sales you could have as many "hand to hand" sales as you wanted if you documented the sales in a receipt book and paid your taxes on those sales... Just a suggestion
