I see some people saying bag appeal doesn't matter because they are connoisseurs. When I think of a cannabis connoisseur, I think of someone that demands all aspects of the bud to meet a high standard, including looks. I guess it depends on what your idea of a cannabis connoisseur actually is, eh?

If bag appeal didn't matter, wouldn't everyone be buying mexi-brick weed? That shit fucks me up, mang, and super cheap!!!

In my opinion, the SMELL is what i look for and is severely lacking in most every seed I plant nowadays. Where is the funk? Has it been bred out? Lost through generations of indoor lacking uv? To me smell is a better indicator of potency/ flavor/ APPEAL.
Ask yourself this: When is the last time you smelled some dank from 10' away that didnt get you HIGH?
When was the last time you looked at/ smoked sugary nugs with no stank that didnt get you high?
I'll bet the latter happens 10 times as often. Ruderalis can be frosty as hell- still does not get you high.
OK my stoned incoherent ramble is over.......Time for another J

Oh amen brother. I've never run across weed with a great terpene profile that has let me down.

I lived in Tucson in the early 90's and some great weed used to come across the border and stupid cheap.

Back at cha nondual! Some of the most potent weed we ever got was a nicely bricked and packed mexican weed. Got it from a friends dad around 94' in red waxed kilos. We called it "super mex" - had lots of trichs, less seed than usual schwag, wasnt as tightly baled, stunk of mildly of skunk piss and got u ripped- ripped. Once people got over the looks , they ate it up.

4 me I usually don't by weed bcuz I grow my own.. But when I go 2 the Bay I always like 2 hit the clubs in SF & when I do I make my pick I'd say 45% looks & 55% smell..I love crazy smelling dank.. 80% of the time this method works out 4 me.... But I have smoked ugly dank that straight blew me away.. But 4 me it's like girls she juss gots 2 look good 2 catch my eye & she sure better smell good.. If she looks good & smells good then I'll crack her open & give her a taste.. LOL!!!!

But on 2nd buy I go on the affect I got after I puffed it.. I like 2 juss get a gram 2 test it out then if it's bomb I'll get more..

In order of importance:

1) The Effect
2) Everything else

Granted, I enjoy the smell, taste, appearance, etc, etc...and the fun in exploring
variations.....But when the smoke clears, it's the effect that determines ye ol' ya or nay.

I'd happily grow a 25 week sativa, even if the yield was an 1/8th....IF the effect was ideal.

P.S. Best herb of my life was brick Mexi (I assume as it was seriously compressed). Tropical climate = sativa (I assume)= best herb of my life. Of course this was before crazy Cartel Days and the race for fast finishing strains.

Viva la marijuana de Mexico!

No offense, SERIOUSLY, but.....buying herb based on looks and smell is like
buying a car because its red and smells like potpourri. Uhhhhhh......???????

This is my ultimate problem with commercial herb and its price: Salesmanship.

Im not gunna drive 3hr 2 SF & walk in2 a club & buy the ugly buds that don't smell good..

Buying a gram 2 test out is very different then buying a car..

wow, eye am very surprised...

eye clicked on 100% thinking that it would have been an overwhelmingly obvious popular choice but boy was eye wrong!

eye have a great eye though...

eye can see what many other I's may not...

or perhaps my brain has been trained enough to be able to decipher how good weed is by its looks... you know they say that everybody is different... right?

who knows... maybe eye is wrong.

..................the word "eye" is pretty damn weird.... I ... yes I ... have just determined that.... or maybe it is just me that is weird?

Then your going to miss out on some sweet bud my friend LOL

As far as what Lilwayne said about eye well your eyes can be decieved. Rely on your brain to tell you how good the bud is.. I have seen some bud that looked and tasted amazing but did nothing.

What I pick up the most from this thread is that we are all different and what one person thinks is good the other thinks sucks. This has always been the way. This is why clubs have so many different strains and ppl like all different ones.. Everyone thinks they know what is right lol.. They are all experts on the subject ie.me lol stay safe headband 707

Wow...almost 100 replies..you guys have more than made my poll a sucsess, providing me a wealth of information, but it's so great to see so many of you chiming in and getting along together.
This post, from someone I have a lot of respect for, is from my Med Forum poll asking Med patients the same question.

I can not remember the last time a buyer asked to smoke a joint DD, I shit you not, musta been in the early 80's or so. The bag appeal + aroma = enough info for most folk working the midlands to make the call regarding whether or not to pull the trigger. The old saying that "if you can't BS your way into the front door" etc seems to hold true for most, high quality product needs to check all these boxes off - including curb-appeal.

Everybody has smoked that Thai etc that maybe didn't look as good as the other but blew it away, but as a breeder I can fully relate to the preceding paragraph, for more than 9 out of 10 times the absolute best from within that Thai population will come from within that group of the best lookers (trichome field density, head size, etc).-T

Tom good to hear from you, I'm willing to bet 99% of the Peeps in both my polls would agree with you-I do. The grower might say.."Try it first?" then they'd grumble as they scrunched up their forehead and grimaced.."..are you F'n crazy-no one does that?"

My first real buzz, late 60s, was scrimpy shaggy buds tied to red sticks with hemp. We were so used to mexi brick that this type presentation blew us away-kids in a candy store! I can still remember where I was, what time of day, who was there..life changing buzz from Thailand.

Cheers..DD

In order of importance to me.

#1. The Buzz!

Taste
Smell
Looks or bag appeal

Best example I can give would be some chemo I had once. Was all stretch airy stuff with more sweet leaf than I care to have left but man I kept going back for more till it was gone.

Just an excellent topic....my 02 cents

From a growers perspective....I have grown out over 40 different strains the last 2 years...looking for that perfect combination...at this point....have about 6-8 strains that qualify.....but to me personally.....

1) Super beautiful frosty shining trichomes
2) Flavorful smell....pepper...berry...lemon...pine...coffee....grape....funky....skunky
3) Taste...should be similar as smell....but very pleasant
4) High.....depends on what I am doing....day...need uplifting and creative...so I want one that hits right behind the eyes..and back of head pretty fast....experience teaches me...that all my senses love this medicine and it's best to take 2...pretty strong hits and then wait about 10 minutes....even though....about 1 minutes after your 2nd you will want another one.....just wait for the full effect...and you will be good for a few hours.
4A) High......evening or night time.....some pretty hard hitting indica or at least a indica dominate strain....again taste should be similar to smell....and smooth.
5) Then last is the overall experience.....pretty easy to describe when your are experiencing it....and everybody is different.....but should put a smile on your face.

Sorry for the ramble.....its early....and well you know.

Very true.. I do miss out at times.. I do wish I could try them all.. I like 2 ask a local that's in the club next 2 me & ask them witch 1 is super fire rite now.. I also tell the bud tender that I traveled many miles & witch strain is the heaviest hitter.. I'll try a Lil bud of what they say is good but mostly I juss go on my gut feeling.. Sometimes I'm rite & sometimes I'm wrong..

Zero...
I grow it, I smoke it.
Potency and flavor are much more important to me, and many of my favorites are definitely not good lookers. African and haze strains, for example.
.
If I grew for others I might have different criteria.

I am influenced 75% by bag appeal until I smoke it...If its frosty as shit with no high I am no longer influenced heh...This day in age I expect nothing less, but weed that is AAA in all categories just so much out there top quality no reason to settle for less.

Yeah it's different, and I know a visual inspection can tell a person a lot about how the plant was treated and such, I'm just an overly ideal grower who wishes money (prohibition) didn't play such a large part in the exchange and exploration of new varieties with all their unique characteristics.

I like the tester idea. I don't know how shops work, exactly. My comment was more on the general theme of the show, tell, and smell methods of salesmanship, back alley or otherwise. I just don't trust most of what anyone trying to sell me herb says. That's why I come here to read other peoples' smoke reports, hoping they got the strain straight from the source.
