Smell is often a good tell, but I have come across absolutely amazing sativas that had very little odor and I have run across some truly stinky indica style berry/skunk scented bud that really wasn't very good at all. I guess the later is probably just my dislike of indica effects, rather than the bud actually being of poor quality.
Still, even the old sniff test can throw me off at times although I trust it more than my eyes. I find the types of aromas are more important than the strength of them.
For instance if the bud smells like old leather, woody incense, lemon cleaner or peppery spices it will immediately get my attention even if it doesn't stink up the place since it is cannabis with these sorts of odors that works best for the medical problems I have. (Neurological and GI problems.)
