thanks guys!

NOTE: I mislabeled the purple pic above as gum x wl but it is in fact the Cush (green crack) x wl. I've edited the post with the correct info.

no worries my friend! a single herm from 7 gals is no big deal, and the other lines have no intersex individuals at all so far.

did have one gum male auto flower during stress testing, but the other one looks good!

got cuts of a few males in plugs: gum x wl, lui x g13, and gg4 x fbpk.

gonna f2 those useful lines and store the gg4 pollen for when I get my hands on the cut, make a little bx with it.

already got cuts of the purple Cush girl vegging up for a second round. she is super vigorous!

Hey heady...what's the benifit of adding Neptune's fish and seaweed to charcoal? I noticed you mentioned precharging charcoal with the Neptune's in your soil mix.

microbe man recently clarified some terms for me, let's start there:

char = charcoal
bio char = charged char

afaik, the reason it's important to charge your charcoal is that it's pure carbon and adding it straight to a mix could tie up plant-available nitrogen while the soil attempts to decompose it (think composting, C:N ratios).

charging is an attempt to balance that c:n ratio a bit before the char is amended into the soil. fish hydrolysate works great in my experience. I just mix up a large amount to the "compost starter" recommended ratio on the back of the bottle, saturate the char with it, and let it sit for at least several hours to a day.

I've also seen other activation methods. one product just mixes basalt rock dust with the char. BAS soaks in compost tea. both of those sound nice but if my working concept as I laid it out above is valid then I don't see how either of those methods balance the raw carbon.

just my 2 cents, I'd love to hear any compelling arguments otherwise! :2cents:

Biochar is a fascinating topic. Anyone who is interested should look into terra preta as well. Advocates see biochar as a way to improve soil for the long term and possibly even a significant way to sequester carbon.
My method of 'charging' char is to put it in my worm bin. When I harvest the EWC the char will be ready to go.

Nice thanks for the info, makes sense. So the char that I have consists of 100% forest waste biochar...Mother Earth brand. Is this char already charged or is the biochar in the name just as a marketing scheme? I think I'm just going to go ahead and add in the fish hydrolysate anyway...can't hurt either way right?

And that Cush x wl looks amazing :woohoo:...I can only imagine what she smells like and more so what she'll smell like as she matures. :tiphat:

i'm not familiar with the product, sorry! i just buy hardwood lump charcoal and smash it up by hand. i want a lot in my mix and i don't like what the horticultural products cost.

also i get a lovely diversity in particle size, from a fine dust to 1/2" pieces. the larger pieces act as airation, and the fine dust forms aggregates after charging and reminds me of a nice silt in real soil.

in other news, we got roots! thank fuck. good old rooting plugs in an aloe, silica, fulvic solution.

Glad to hear you got roots, did you end up with better success with the rw or the rr plugs? Just curious. I know we have talked a bit about it already. I'm sure the hardwood charcoal is easy to find around here. Possibly could make it yourself eh?

yeah if you've got the space it's waaaaayyy easier making char from stuff that's already the right size than it is smashing up charcoal. chipped yard waste or rice hulls are the perfect size for aeration amendments.

there's a ton of pyrolizor designs available on the web but my favorite is the chimney. if I had the space I'd totally make one of these.

I seem to be getting similar rooting in the rr and rw plugs. I hate rock wool but I happened to snap this pic first and you can see I'm getting pretty lazy with the picture taking :shucks:

An interesting technique I have dabbled with is using aloe pomice, don't think that is the correct terminology. Basically cut off a blade from live aloe, and use the soft gooey insides like cloning gel. Just dip it right in the cut off part. There is always willow water as well, its been said to root a Popsicle stick! And azos can be used as a root inducer.

i agree with the azos. the azos im gonna be using next year though is suppose to be better then extreme gardening's azos. this one is called "modern microbes" check it out ,not only does it have the same exact microbe that is in EG azos its got quite a few more azo strains plus other shit as well
