Hash oil techniques and solvents for non BHO hash oil?

Seed Whore
I went to buy 10 large paper bags to dry my plants and found 2 more spray cans with N-Hexane in them at my local hardware store. :woohoo:

Now I have 4 cans so far and I got my PTFE sleeves today in the mail.

How did you not get the point that the discussion was on solvents other than butane? It gets so annoying and redundant when the bubble and rosin people come around. Worse yet the "OMG, what does smoking butane do to a person?" people....

We're talking about something people smoke recreationally, and many of the solvents are things we encounter elsewhere in life. If you wanna be all organic and safe fine, but this was not what I intended to discuss at all.

IF you wanna talk bubble or rosin, tons of other threads and you can even start your very own!

What type vacuum hose would be suitable for running to a dewar condenser if the solvent was intended to be reused? What material would be safe for ethanol or limonene? Vinyl? Polypropylene? Are there any safe materials to use for a 1/4 inch vacuum hose if the solvent is meant for re-use?

I think vinyl and poly rubber hose are safe for ethanol according to this:

Not sure about limonene as a lot of lemon oil and material combinations resulted to N/A.

Id go pfte tubing for peace-of-mind with the limonene

Interesting thread.

Sounds like the Acetone was the best solvent you have found.

I think they are coming out dark because they contain a lot of chlorophyll. I'm sure if you soaked for a lot less time you would get cleaner extracts.

That's also key to doing QWISO and QWET. If the soak time is short enough you will have a final product that is clean enough to be dabbed without residue.

A PTFE lined hose is suitable for both ethanol and limonene.

I have a four liter jug of HPLC grade pentane coming tomorrow, and I just ordered a four liter jug of HPLC grade ethyl acetate. Both safe Category 3 FDA solvents.

No questions asked purchasing. If you use PayPal like I did it's just a few clicks and you're done. Inexpensive UPS ground shipping, no Hazmat fees or taxes, and they ship the next business day. Huge selection, though I couldn't find methyl acetate.

Getting ready for the ISO 3 David's sending me.

If anyone knows the Canadian situation, please share how to search for accommodating local and/or online chemical supply houses.

The pentane arrived, check out the superb protective packaging.

The ethyl acetate was back ordered, and just shipped, as they said it would, Right Price Chemicals follows through!! :tiphat:

I scoured the list of FDA/USP Class 3 solvents for low boilers that haven't already been extensively reported on, and decided to order a four liter jug of reagent grade methyl ethyl ketone, MEK. As it's a DEA Chemical Precursor List 2, I went looking elsewhere, as RPC has already been too kind.

I have a no questions asked confirmed order for a four liter jug of ACS 99+% grade for $75. I had to check out without them informing me of the shipping fee, though I was allowed to choose the carrier, so I'm not really sure if I got a good deal or not. I'll let you know asap of any shenanigans.

Shenanigans, I called Bean Town this morning, it's a no go, "we sent you an email," no they didn't...

My Omega 9000 centrifugal juicer came, I tried squirting water down the chute, and varying the speed all the way down to a crawl with a Variac, no problem. The plan so far is to line the basket with Omega paper filter liners for the initial extraction, directing the flow from the spigot into a 2.5 micron filter paper lined Melitta one cup coffee brewer basket, which drains into a small beaker, or maybe straight into the evaporation dish, I tried both yesterday, again np. So, grind the herb in the juicer, hit it with solvent, switch to a second receiving vessel, and hit it again with solvent until the runoff is clear.

Edit: More on the Omega juicer: https://www.icmag.com/ic/showpost.php?p=7868992&postcount=186

Exotic fruity odor, evaporates quickly, seems strong, though not harsh like acetone, it doesn't dry out your fingers when handling it.

I love the packaging!!! Simple and effective!

Esters do have odors to them. Don't drink too much of it.

A person trained in organic chemistry could make ethyl acetate easily with
glacial acetic acid, dry ethanol and maybe sulphuric acid as the catalyst.

But buying solvents is easier for the most part.

I'm still waiting for for more lab gear before I can play. :)

I bought all kind of glassware and only thought of the lab stand afterwards.

Joe made it with ethanol and acetic anhydride. Definitely aromatic.

Selected and edited comments from Wikipedia regarding ethyl acetate:

Ethyl acetate (systematically ethyl ethanoate, commonly abbreviated EtOAc or EA) is the organic compound with the formula CH3–COO–CH2–CH3, simplified to C4H8O2. This colorless liquid has a characteristic sweet smell (similar to pear drops) and is used in glues, nail polish removers, decaffeinating tea and coffee, and cigarettes (see list of additives in cigarettes). Ethyl acetate is the ester of ethanol and acetic acid; it is manufactured on a large scale for use as a solvent. The combined annual production in 1985 of Japan, North America, and Europe was about 400,000 tonnes. In 2004, an estimated 1.3 million tonnes were produced worldwide.

Uses
Ethyl acetate is used primarily as a solvent and diluent, being favored because of its low cost, low toxicity, and agreeable odor. Ethyl acetate is present in confectionery, perfumes, and fruits. In perfumes, it evaporates quickly, leaving only the scent of the perfume on the skin.

Laboratory uses
In the laboratory, mixtures containing ethyl acetate are commonly used in column chromatography and extractions.

Ethyl acetate is fairly volatile at room temperature and has a boiling point of 77 °C (171 °F). Due to these properties, it can be removed from a sample by heating in a hot water bath and providing ventilation with compressed air.

Occurrence in wines
Ethyl acetate is the most common ester in wine, being the product of the most common volatile organic acid – acetic acid, and the ethyl alcohol generated during the fermentation. The aroma of ethyl acetate is most vivid in younger wines and contributes towards the general perception of "fruitiness" in the wine. Sensitivity varies, with most people having a perception threshold around 120 mg/L. Excessive amounts of ethyl acetate are considered a wine fault.

Entomological killing agent
In the field of entomology, ethyl acetate is an effective asphyxiant for use in insect collecting and study. In a killing jar charged with ethyl acetate, the vapors will kill the collected insect quickly without destroying it. Because it is not hygroscopic, ethyl acetate also keeps the insect soft enough to allow proper mounting suitable for a collection.

Safety
The LD50 for rats is 5620 mg/kg, indicating low toxicity. Given that the chemical is naturally present in many organisms, there is little risk of toxicity.

You would have been better off getting 40% vodka and distilling it.

I got a glass laboratory still for about $100 and can distill all I want now.
