Hash oil techniques and solvents for non BHO hash oil?

I just tried placing an order and was directed to inquire of California purchase restrictions.
Thanks SH. But does that mean they wont send it to you now?
I am curious to try a pentane extraction, sounds like it would be a very clean end product and you could do a quick soak or maybe just pour it over the material.
Have you heard of anyone using pentane to winterize? Or is it too expensive for that? Seems like you could save alot of terps with such a low bp versus ethanol or ISO.
Thank you again SH! :tiphat:

That doesn't even make sense to me?!? Firstly, whatever limonene is, it's certainly not readily and cheaply available to me.

Secondly, how ever would one purge a solvent with a higher boiling point than THC?

You're gonna have to ask Horatio that question

I'm pursuing it.

Pentane produces a clearer product than hexane, and is less toxic, USP listed as nearly safe category 3, rather than 2.

It's non-polar, you don't use it to winterize.

"Hexane honey oil"

Use it for the primary extraction as with hexane, or secondary,

Step 6: Purification (substitute pentane for the petroleum ether which is predominately pentane with hexane)

https://archive.org/stream/CannabisAlchemy/cannabis-alchemy#page/n25/mode/2up

I suggest a separatory funnel with the above technique,

Dave is sending me an Iso 3, I'll see if I can get it to reclaim pentane.

Oh yah its non-polar duh!
Awesome, thanks for the links SH, looks like everything i need. I will stay posted to see if you are able to order the pentane. Until then ill stay dry and wait for the sun to come out to play!

if your qwiso concentrate is coming out dark and syrupy, youve not done the wash quickly enough. it can be every bit as hq as bho.

have you tried a qwet tek?

Use bubble bags with dry ice in a 5 gallon bucket with a lid (buy at hydro store) A pound is plenty of weed if you are using the 5 bubble bags. Stack a bunch of bags from 250 to 50 microns. Add a pound of dry ice shards and all your (very dry) weed. And then put a lid on your bucket, (which will be clamping against the bags which are folded over the edge of the bucket). And shake the shit out of it. When you stop shaking and take the lid off the, below all your bags is the sift you can press into full melt. Every layer of bag will have it's own quality sift. At some point it's kief not hash but the stuff that goes through the 50 micron bag is for sure the icky sticky.

How has no one suggested rosin yet?

Tumble/sift the trim of keif and then press into rosin. You can make a DIY heated hand press for $55.

I have been doing extracts since 2002 with Hexane. I am on my fourth drum. My son moved to California and picked up the last drum for $500, in the past I have been paying $1,500 per 55 gallons. It sure makes a difference being able to do in person shopping for the solvent.

I did a fair amount of research before settling on Hexane. Polar solvents pull chlorophyll as well as THC which makes for black and nasty extract. Long soaks are another major problem, any soak over a minute is too long, 45 seconds of agitation and then dumped through a large mesh screen. The solution is then allowed to settle for a few days. The clear is siphoned into a fresh container and the solvent is vacuumed out.

The product is a clear amber which stays soft. A four year old bottle found in a drawer had not deteriorated in the least. Depending on usage the spritzer bottle lasts anywhere from one to four months with daily use, under the tongue takes only a third the amount smoking does.
Different effect though, I prefer vaping, but many prefer the spray.

From Gray Wolf on another thread:

"Some concern with hexane and heptane, because our livers turn them into a 2.5 Dione, which is a carcinogen.

On the other hand, the FDA lists both pentane and heptane as Class III, and only hexane as Class II.

I would personally pick pentane and that is what we mostly use these days instead of hexane."

Really interested in the limonene hash oil.. pretty sure just need a rotovap.. or vacuum distillation even

Invest in a quality cold trap or two, you're absolutely right - you don't need a true rotary evaporator. Just dry ice, some magnetic stirring, and heat if you need.

Just ordered a Soxhlet Apparatus, 1000 mL Separatory Funnel a case of 12 X 1000mL Boston Amber bottles last week.

I'll be using Hexane and water as my primary extraction solvents. Then I'll clean it all up with dry ethanol once I'm done.

I have a few more fancy pieces of glass to buy beforehand though.

Like a Dean stark trap, another reflux condenser, a Dewar style Condenser and others.

Dewar style condensers are awesome, the vacuum helps insulate the cold a lot. You can keep a slurry in there for days sometimes...

Not only that, the ability to pull a vaccum is increased with cold temperatures.

So a better vaccum with less solvent escaping into the atmosphere sounds like a big plus to me.

I also ordered some PTFE sleeves for my glassware. Since the vaccum grease for glassware that
I also have may leak with solvents like Hexane. The sleeves are easy to put on/off and are reusable.

I have a four liter jug of HPLC grade pentane coming tomorrow, and I just ordered a four liter jug of HPLC grade ethyl acetate. Both safe Category 3 FDA solvents.

No questions asked purchasing. If you use PayPal like I did it's just a few clicks and you're done. Inexpensive UPS ground shipping, no Hazmat fees or taxes, and they ship the next business day. Huge selection, though I couldn't find methyl acetate.

Getting ready for the ISO 3 David's sending me.

If anyone knows the Canadian situation, please share how to search for accommodating local and/or online chemical supply houses.

The pentane arrived, check out the superb protective packaging.

The grease should be PTFE and similar isomers I think...should have the same chemical resistance as standard PTFE, with the added bonus that it stays viscous at higher temperatures.

Check out Krytox GPL207 - I believe it was mentioned in one of the distillation/"clear" threads. What grease do you currently use?

This is the kind I bought a while ago on Ebay for another project and I was right I can't use it with Hexane.

Dow Corning High Vacuum Grease:

Dow Corning® High Vacuum Grease is insoluble in water, methanol, ethanol, acetone, glycol and glycerine.
It can be dispersed in kerosene, stoddard solvent, benzene, toluene, ethyl ether or petroleum ether.

I'll have to check for PTFE grease now.I do see lots of Krytox grease for sale there.

Interesting. It probably gets a little thin around 200C which is why you have to use so much. I wonder what it's made of.
As for the Krytox, I thought GPL202 was similar to the grease you use now - but maybe that's only in thermal resistance, not chemical resistance.

I think I made a very wise choice to go with the PTFE sleeves regardless.

Partial description:

  1. Standard taper size reusable PTFE joint sleeves.
  2. Eliminates the need for lubrication and and prevents frozen or leaky ground joints.
  3. Can be used over a temperature range of -75 to +260 C.
PTFE - Polytetrafluoroethylene aka Teflon

PTFE is opaque and has the lowest coefficient of friction of any solid.

Here's the PTFE and Teflon Chemical Compatibility Chart:

https://www.calpaclab.com/teflon-ptfe-compatibility/

With Hexane it's A-Excellent.

Curious as to speed of distilling water/limonene azeotrope in a 1L flask with magnetic stir bar and hot plate connected to a dewar style cold trap.. vs a 1L rotovap with chiller and hot water bath..
