Home Depot (except in CA) (they have MEK too) (except in CA)
Ethyl acetate, 100%, gallon cans
by Klean-Strip
$25

View Image

Couldn't resist. Sorry, sorry. Carry on.

I was at Home Depot and checked the shelf, nice 100% acetone, up to five gallon pails, everything else has been reformulated, I took notes, and checked against the Klean-Strip SDS's when I returned home.

I bought a gallon of the acetone, and I'll probably pick up another, it was only $13 plus California sales tax.

Propyl acetate, iso-butyl alcohol, n-butyl alcohol, and amyl acetate coming.

These are all from the FDA USP Class 3 solvent list except the amyl acetate, I found that myself.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Amyl_acetate

https://americandrycleaner.com/articles/using-amyl-acetate-1

I've been going over the compatibility charts for lab containers, I had to order some reagent bottles, the polypropylene caps that come with the Pyrex bottles I bought are listed as not up to withstanding pentane and methyl acetate.

Getting organized, doubling down on safety procedures, almost ready to unpack the ISO-3.

I got a liter of acetone a while back.

I think now I'm going to convert it all into chloroform using bleach.:tiphat:

Seems like that's one of the better solvents to extract cannabinoids with.

There's lots of videos of people making some on YouTube.

Looks like an easy synthesis.

Acetone ... WOW!

That remind me 90's and hash oil made of methanol, ffs!

So not miss these days, honestly nothing worth a good bho made of top weed and butane (cooking grade)

What's wrong with methanol?

It extracts very well and if a person can rid his extract from it he's golden.

No question chloroform extracts cannabinoids well, and it's noncombustible.

It's also on the List of Extremely Hazardous Substances, as it afflicts the heart and is a suspected mutagen.

I don't want any methanol or any other Class 1 or 2 solvent being ingested by anyone.

Isopropyl alcohol is Class 3, and any grade is readily available to the general public at competitive pricing,

http://stores.ebay.com/gotparts747/_i.html?_dmd=2&_nkw=isopropyl+alcohol

I may have just scored ethyl formate @ $27/500ml, I ordered four. Details if it ships. This is about the last of the Class 3 list that looked promising, and I wasn't finding from a friendly source. The boiling point is low, and the vapor pressure high, probably blows off like acetone. GRAS, Generally Recognized As Safe.

Sec. 184.1295 Ethyl formate.
(a) Ethyl formate (C3H6O2, CAS Reg. No. 109-94-4) is also referred to as ethyl methanoate. It is an ester of formic acid and is prepared by esterification of formic acid with ethyl alcohol or by distillation of ethyl acetate and formic acid in the presence of concentrated sulfuric acid. Ethyl formate occurs naturally in some plant oils, fruits, and juices but does not occur naturally in the animal kingdom.

(b) The ingredient meets the specifications of the "Food Chemicals Codex," 3d Ed. (1981), p. 376, which is incorporated by reference. Copies may be obtained from the National Academy Press, 2101 Constitution Ave. NW., Washington, DC 20418, or may be examined at the National Archives and Records Administration (NARA). For information on the availability of this material at NARA, call 202-741-6030, or go to: http://www.archives.gov/federal_register/code_of_federal_regulations/ibr_locations.html.

(c) The ingredient is used as a flavoring agent and adjuvant as defined in 170.3(o)(12) of this chapter.

(d) The ingredient is used in food at levels not to exceed good manufacturing practice in accordance with 184.1(b)(1). Current good manufacturing practice results in a maximum level, as served, of 0.05 percent in baked goods as defined in 170.3(n)(1) of this chapter; 0.04 percent in chewing gum as defined in 170.3(n)(6), hard candy as defined in 170.3(n)(25), and soft candy as defined in 170.3(n)(38) of this chapter; 0.02 percent in frozen dairy desserts as defined in 170.3(n)(20) of this chapter; 0.03 percent in gelatins, puddings, and fillings as defined in 170.3(n)(22) of this chapter; and 0.01 percent in all other food categories.

(e) Prior sanctions for ethyl formate different from the uses established in this section do not exist or have been waived.

Question: How many solvents you going to buy before doing an extraction?

Like you must have close to a dozen by now. :tiphat:

If you want safe. Why not use good old Terpenes?

Terpenes as green solvents for extraction of oil from microalgae.

Abstract

Herein is described a green and original alternative procedure for the extraction of oil from microalgae. Extractions were carried out using terpenes obtained from renewable feedstocks as alternative solvents instead of hazardous petroleum solvents such as n-hexane. The described method is achieved in two steps using Soxhlet extraction followed by the elimination of the solvent from the medium using Clevenger distillation in the second step. Oils extracted from microalgae were compared in terms of qualitative and quantitative determination. No significant difference was obtained between each extract, allowing us to conclude that the proposed method is green, clean and efficient.

Manofohm won't sell ethyl formate via Amazon or eBay, the order went through at his site.

New message from: manofohm (3,544Red Star)

I cannot, when we started stocking more materials certain manufacturing processes needed to be axed due to the combined hazard of distilling highly volatile compounds and flammable stock. I am planning on moving to a larger facility within a year. If and when I do that this is a product I would likely stock again... It was quite popular when I did sell it.

Ordered a twelve position test tube stand for the visual comparison test.

I am about to order 1L of DMC (Dimethylcarbonate) after reading a patent for extracting and purifying aromatics less than 350mw. More interested in testing it's utility as a post-processing solvent. Its flammable, so safety 1st. make sure to read msds, and have proper equipment before experimenting.

Sweet as the description would lead one to expect.

And some pics of authentic Corning Pyrex reagent bottles from Germany. The graduated cylinder set was just as exquisite.

Solvent table arranged as to increasing polarity,

http://murov.info/orgsolvents.htm#TABLE 2

I ordered cyclohexane for the purpose of comparison, it's not a Class 3 solvent so would require full purging if used for cannabis extraction.

Compare n-propyl alcohol (1-propanol) with ethanol at the above linked solvent polarity table.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1-Propanol

Benzyl alcohol, ethyl formate, cyclohexane, and dimethyl carbonate on order along with a second test tube rack.

Iso-octane came up here,

"Tools and techniques for solvent selection: green solvent selection guides"

https://sustainablechemicalprocesses.springeropen.com/articles/10.1186/s40508-016-0051-z

Odorless according to Wikipedia,

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2,2,4-Trimethylpentane

MSDS,

http://www.cpchem.com/msds/100000068259_SDS_US_EN.PDF

It's available at Amazon Marketplace from SEOH at $54/500ml, instead I went with Right Price Chemicals ACS grade at $120/liter plus $15 shipping to check if they're still being friendly. Their price for four liters is much more reasonable if anyone's interested.
