Welcome Dubmantx! I hope you find ICMag as warm and inviting as I have. We're not the only Texas growers on here, my friend. Be on the lookout for Texas Kid as he is a true "Master Grower" and his grows are some of the finest you will ever see!
Hey Leeroy - Thanks for dropping in and checkin' on me. I do think it's long overdue for an update, my brotha!
UPDATE TIME!!
The girls are now into their 41st day of 12/12! The plants are doing quite nicely. While there is still evidence of the PH problem I had a couple of weeks ago, this doesn't seem to have affected their flowering power. Once I discovered that the run-off water was in the 4.8-5.2 range I added 1/2 cup of pulverized Dolomite Lime to the surface of the soil and watered it in well with 7.0 plain water. The newer leaf growth is lush and look pretty good.
The last round of nutes at 1400 ppm seemed to have bothered the Apollo Mist though as overnight the leaf tips turned under and form a "claw" or "ram's horn" kind of affect. After doing a bit of research over at OG, I came to the conclusion that there was maybe a bit of overload of nitrogen. The next feeding I cut way back on MICRO (when seems to have the most nitrogen) but kept all other ferts/additives at the recommended levels for Week 5 of flower. The buds are doing really well but the turning under of the tips still exists. The buds are doing well enough that I had to stake them up as their weight was causing MAJOR sagging of the branches. If what I hear is true that the buds put on the bulk of their weight in the last two weeks, this should end up being something for sure!!
I have learned quite a few lessons so far that I won't be making in the future. One is that I have learned that the Fox Farms soil mix is quite acidic or tends to go quite acidic rather quickly from the nutes. As a result, I have added Dolomite Lime to the soil of my new seedlings and clones in an effort to "head this off at the pass". Secondly, I will be watering with epsom salts a few times throughout the next grow as I did have a magnesium deficiency throughout this grow. Two or three treatments throughout the grow seem to be the ticket to preventing this in the future. Thirdly, I won't be as agressive so early on with my pruning techniques as this has SEVERELY limited the yield on my Blue Thunder #1 (my Blueberry pheno). I will wait until I have good axial limb growth, then determine which limbs I will keep and then I will get more agressive with my prunings. And, lastly and most importantly, I WILL TUNE IN to these plants more than I have in regards to when they actually NEED feeding/watering as opposed to adhering to some set schedule. I have made the #1 Newbie mistake of watering/feeding when they don't need it and they plants have shown me their disdain for it.
All of these factors have contributed to the fact that these plants have most probably NOT reached their full potential. However, for a first grow in 25 years, they/I have done pretty well, I think. Now, I'm not "home-free" yet so, KNOCK ON WEED there won't be any further misjudgments on my part to screw things up in the next few weeks.
Because of my low PH problem, Growdoc suggested I go another week longer to let them reach their potential. I'm not sure that they will wait that long. I'm already seeing some signs of ripening. A few pistils are starting to turn color and a few upper leaves are starting to yellow as well. The trichs still look clear for the most part but I'm seeing some that are starting to look cloudy. If the breeder flower times are right, I will be looking at harvest around the 15th of May. Being that I used CO2 throughout most of flower, I am wondering if that might shorten the flower period? Any thoughts on this guys? If not, I'll probably harvest on the 15th or when I see the trichs 80% cloudy/20% Amber.
Thanks Zepp, my brotha! You always stopping by to check in on me means the world to me! I promise you that the next run will yield better and the overall health of the plants will be better . . .
are you using GH nutes in soil? Thats what i have been doing since I started flowering and it works pretty well. I was thinking of switching to guano though just for taste reasons. You sampled any of the smaller buds? Just wondering how they taste using the GH nutes.
Hey Dubmantx! Thanks again for stopping by. To answer your question, NO, I don't use GH. I have used the entire Advanced Nutrients 2+Program throughout this grow with one additonal additive, Tarantula. I did sample some of the early, early buds (about 2 weeks into flowering) and, frankly, they smoked VERY smoothly and the taste was quite nice eventhough the budlets were so immature. I WON'T ever use GH as I have to be one of Advanced Nutrients biggest fans for a plethera of reasons (look back around page 4 or 5 to find out why).
Hello Cough Cough, m'lady! How are you? I really appreciate you stopping by my thread. Always great to have fellow Texans in the house! I also greatly appreciate your kind comments! Be sure to stop back by more often as I get closer to bringin' these girls home!!
Hey bro!
They look good. I am very happy for you.
My Apollo Mist 1a is really coming along well in the bio-tubs. We will be flipping over to 12/12 soon.
My Blue Thunders in the DWC are doing well too. The rest in the soil are kinda just there, not growing real fast. They will come on strong I am sure.
Did you get your package yet? I got mine and all I can say is "Dayum!"
very nice package.
I am going to have to use a really crappy cam for the pics...
The plants are now at day 57 of 12/12! While the Blue Thunders are looking great and putting on quite a bit of trichs, my Apollo Mist is basically fried. Unfortunately, I wasn't able to identify the low soil PH problem until it was too late and the plant just wilted and became crispy from the 4.8-5.2 soil PH conditions. There was decent bud that had already grown when this problem became fatal, so I just moved the plant into the 48 hour dark period in hopes that it will produce more trichs (if the thing is still alive at all) and then I will chop her and dry her out. The buds never really tightened up much and are very airy and loose but, who knows, they may still be some reasonable smoke to rescue from her. I have another Apollo Mist clone that is doing really well and, now that I have the soil PH issue more under control, I look for better things from this strain this time around. Sorry Rezdog. I wish I could have done your genetics a better service this time around but I promise I'll do better with her clone.
On the other hand, the Blue Thunders are no worse for wear being that they too had very low PH in the soil. Apparently, the dolomite lime and the higher PH'ing of their nutes saved this strain from the demise that the AM went through. The strength of Reeferman's genetics go unquestioned here as they are very healthy and packing on the buddage! My only dissappointment thus far has been that I didn't get the purple pheno of Blue Thunder in this run. Even though Reeferman says that one out of three turn purple, none has. I believe that I have two or three different phenotypes of Blue Thunder. So far, I would say that Blue Thunder #5 most resembles the description of the strain. It looks to have a lighter, lime green bud that supposedly finishes with lavender hues in it. So far, no lavender hues but that may still come in the drying and curing. This phenotype is also, by far, the most trich layden pheno.
The other two pheno types (which includes the Blueberry pheno) have been more vigorous growers and have more massive colas but don't seem to have as much frost on them to this point. I won't know which pheno will be the "keeper" until I get them dried and cured and smoked tested but rest assured that I have clones of all of them vegging right now!
Tonight the Blue Thunders will be receiving their second dose of Advanced Nutrients Final Phase. My plan is to give them one more plain PH'd watering on Saturday and this will be their final watering as I will move them into a 48-72 dark period on Tuesday of next week. I will harvest them on Friday of next week, dry them for about 10 days and then manicure them and put them in glass jars for 3-4 weeks.
I will do one more update right after the 48-72 hour dark period to show (hopefully) all the frost that the buds have put on before I whack 'em! I will finish this thread with a full smoke report and shots of the cured buds, of course!
Again, my thanks to all of my good friends here on ICMag for sticking with this "newbie" grower through to my first harvest! I have greatly appreciated everyones kind comments and tips throughout this grow. I am deeply indebted to you all for your wonderful help. So, let's take a look at the girls! These pics were taken on Sunday which was Day 55 of 12/12. I look forward to your comments and responses as always! :friends:
Rellik my brotha...
Congrats to you!
It looks like you have a great looking batch o buds. They look great.
I can't wait for my blue thunder to look like that.
Thanks Rule!! Just a little patience, my brotha, and you too will be knee deep in some awesome, dank buddage! There is no question that the Blue Thunders are some incredibly forgiving genetics and, even with some dumbass "newbie" manuevers, will still throw some gorgeous colas!
I expect those Bio-Tubs of yours will really kick those babies into gear without question. They seem to be very tolerant of the nutes but make sure that you give them some epsom salts throughout the grow to prevent any magnesium deficiencies. Since I have done this to my clones, I have had virtually no leaf droppage and all growth is lush and healthy. My plan is to give them epsom salts three times throughout this grow. They have already had one treatment and when I get them transplanted into their new five gallon buckets, I will give them another treatment. The third and final one will be about halfway through flower.
Just treat them with love and give them everything they ask for and you will be rewarded with some top notch smoke! Thanks again for checking in on me, Rule! I sincerely appreciate it!
Awesome, Chuckie! I know you'll be real happy with those Blue Thunders. It will be an easy grower for someone with your skills. I'll be interested to see if you get a purple pheno out of your batch! Please feel free to post updates of your plants, my brotha! I'll look forward to seeing how yours grow compared to what mine have done.
relik
Ditto - I'm very impressed with your grow! Sorry about your Apollo Mist, but now you have the pH issue down, that problem is done. Those Blue Thunders look awesome, bet they cure into superb looking and tasting herb!
We'll do, Dubmantx! It's really frustrating to look at these plants and really have no idea how much they will yield! My guess is that I'll end up with about 8 oz's (hopefully) from the four plants. While this is not going to set any world records, I am happy with that as a first grow! However, you can be sure that I am looking for a far better yield per plant with my plants that are vegging right now. They already look sooo much better than this grow did at the same stage. Anyway, I will be sure to report the dried yields and how much per pheno I got along with a full smoke report!!
Mr. Greenjeans - Thanks for stopping in again, my man! How have you been? Yes, those nugs look like they should be some really good smoke. I just noticed a few minutes ago that the very piney scent that they had through most of flower is now mellowing into what certainly smells like a berry smell! If one lets his imagination run a bit, one might actually think it smells a bit like BLUEBERRIES!! WOOOHOOO!! Can't wait to see, as these plants ripen, if that berry smell develops more. Zeppelindood (Yes, I used the "e" this time, Zepp! ) says that his Blue Thunder smell and tasted more like Blueberries than his DJ Short Blueberry did!! :jawdrop: Makes one's taste buds tingle with anticipation, doesn't it?!?
