Good morning Floridian.Fiddy if you could find a way to keep your tent cooled believe me nothing beats a 1K light, and theres nothing wrong with magnetic ballasts, the ballast problems I hear about these days are from electronic not magnetic ballasts.Nothing wrong with a 600 in a 3 by 3 thats for sure, and considering I've never grown with a 600 I probably should keep my cakehole shut.Just a huge fan of 1K's that's all, their penetrating aspects and just all around size and power cant be beat.Except for LED's from what I hear but I haven't tried those yet either. When I start back up its either double ended 1K's or LED's,I'm still undecided on that one.As for magnetic ballasts they rock and is all we had for years and years. After several years and I mean several they might hum a bit,but that's only because they don't know the words
I'd love to run 1k's someday. As I go from a noob with no skills to a guy with a few grows under my belt I think about upgrading a lot. A little over a year ago when I got this set up I did a lot of reading and settled on the 600 for a lot of reasons. I had no experience at the time so I went with something I though I could be great for learning with. I knew it was going to be impossible to get rid of a lot of heat with no central air conditioning. With hydronic heat it's not even easy to cool my basement when it's below zero outside because of all the hot water running through the pipes down there. I don't hint the only way to get away with making much more heat down there would be to put in a mini split. That would be great but I'm not in a position right now to do that. As you mention there are some new light technology out there that may prove better soon. The LED lights multi CMH lights and DE lights may be the way of the future. I too want to learn more about the really good LED's these days but have some reservations about them. It seems like it's hard to know the quality of some of the LED lights and brands. Some people have great results with them. But the good ones are expensive. And how often do you need to replace them? Lots to think about with them. My guess is prices will continue to come down. I gues its good and bad that there are so many choices these days.
Maybe I'll dig out that light and ballast and plug it in to see if it even works. We got that thing at least 10 years ago used and no telling how old it is. If it works maybe I could use my hood with that ballast and see how much heat it makes. I could run it in an empty tent for a cycle and check the temps. I'm on a 20A circuit so that would be ok for light and fans I think.
