Fermented plant extracts

I hit the vegetable and berries with a nettle tea last evening and by this afternoon I was pretty amazed at the response by the plant's leaves and branches. Particularly the tomato plants.

I also hit the 4 comfrey plants. One of them is already 2' tall at the very tip. If a person has never grown this plant then the daily rate of growth would sound like complete B.S. - I can see how the claims of total biomass are accurate. I got a late start - I can't even imagine what these plants will be doing a year from now.

The strawberry plants really responded well to the nettle tea. I'll be looking over the next few days because we're actually going to have summer weather - for a whole week!!!

Yeah, you gotta do the search yourself, prolly 'cause it's frame-based.

nothing grows better tomatoes than nettles coot.

Jay

I was out in the garden earlier this morning checking on things and the tomato plants are just spectacular - the branches are horizontal without any staking and the leaves are fully extended - almost looks like some varieties of ferns in the forests around here.

I'm sold. I've got 5 nettle plants running for this summer. That should definitely be enough material to work with for until next summer's harvest along with the comfey and dandelion FPE brews.

The lavender tea is the best insecticide I've ever used. We went to a local lavender festival yesterday and it's always interesting stepping into another's world - these folks are definitely into lavender plants. I had no idea - it's almost like a cult.

The native Yarrow plants are showing flower clusters about 3 - 4" across. Should I let these run out some more before doing a small harvest (I only want or need about 1/2 - 1 gallon of Yarrow tea concentrate)?

Thanks for any suggestions/help!

Hey CC,
I recently made a yarrow extract. I took the leaves and flowers and filled half of a 1 gallon water jug. Then filled most of the way with water and let sit.
Very stinky for sure. No AEM this time.

I've been pouring a few oz in my 1 gal watering can and trying it out. Looking good so far.

One of the Yarrow plants I purchased is the one that you have in your photo - red flowers with a yellow center. Very beautiful plant!

I've got a blue one coming up and another which will throw out purple flowers.

Nice! They are quite vigorous growers as well.(relatively) The yarrow along with the sage attract a good amount of hummingbirds and butterflys which is always cool.
I am still experimenting with the yarrow extract.

i just finished up a batch of yarrow flower FPE (no green material) and it smells really nice :D

I screened off a quart of dandelion flowers and a gallon of whole dandelion fpe today. I threw the dregs on my compost heap. I washed my hands twice and took a shower, and they still stink....yuk...

A quick question, I added a cup of dandelion fpe in a normal compost tea, with molasses, 1.5 cups compost, 1 cup ewc, in 8 gallons water. Then i got wondering if since em1 was used, is making a tea, not worth it? Am i growing anything in it? How does everyone use their fpe after you have it? Teas? Sprays, drenches? Scrappy

oh yea my dandelion smells like diet nettle lol.

i would hesitate to add FPE to a tea brew...

i normally foliar with them. today i took a gallon of water and added a splash of nettle and a splash of yarrow and watered it into my plants. we'll see how that works out.

i mix FPE with ACT when i apply. so into the bucket goes x amount of FPE, into the same bucket goes x amount of ACT and topped off with water if needed. then apply.

Hey guys
A question for jaykush and any body else who care to answer.

Regarding the liquid that comes out of the bottom of the "bokashi bin". now the research that Iv'e done, only once or twice has it been mentioned that the juice can be diluted and used as a fert, has any one else tried this??.

My thoughts are that it is a form of FPE and I was thinking of trying it at about a dilution rate of 1-100 or so, any thoughts.

On another note, Iv'e just finished a alfalfa FPE using fresh sprouts and Em-1 and mollasis and am looking forward to see the results of this.

Iv'e also recently obtained yarrow and comfree plants but being in the middle of winter now I will have to wait till things warm up and growth starts to happen before trying theses. Not found any nettles as yet but they are next on the list.

Many thanks to all who contribute here, great reading and info

Cheers Johnny

Johnny, I asked the very same thing a while back and was told pretty much no one uses it directly on their plants, so I ended up just pouring it in my compost piles, the same with worm juice, from the worm bin.

But since then I have read a little on the Aussy/NZ section of IC, and anyway those guys top dress with bakashi, and they seem to love it. I'm waiting for someone else to try it first, you game? Scrappy

Hey Scrappy, after my post asking about the "juice" I bit the bullet and tried it. I just added it at a rate of about 1-200 and after a week it's all looking good. Every thing is nice and green and healthy so I say no side effects. I will try again with the next feed, this time I will go a little closer to a 1-100 mix and see what happens.

Cheers Johnny:gday:

Johnny, sounds like you did a soil drench with it, not a foliar?

Your plants didn't complain, apparently, but did you notice positives?

Thanks for sharing, I've been lurking wondering what to do with the couple gallons of bokashi juice I have stockpiled...especially because one of them is bokashi'd fertilizer mix (Steve Solomon's COF, more or less).

Might hafta give it a shot.
