Early Season Light Dep....and more.

Hermaphrodites are a bitch and unfortunately with some strains unavoidable as nature takes it course.

When a plant flowers outdoors full season I have seen the most resistance from hermie prone strains, herming.

The cherry pie is a good example of this. I only had one last year and was never able to find a single sack on her. If my memory serves me correctly, cherry pie was bred outside. This in itself could have a lot to do with why it does so good full season , but, performs worse in light dep and indoor situations. (Don't let this get you down, I have 6 in light dep and my full season/light dep look like absolute shit right now. Nearly to the point of me stripping EVERYTHING that is in the ground and restarting. I will give it some more days before I make such drastic decisions.)

With that being said, I have never grown cherry pie in light dep. However I'm smoking some indoor cherry pie right now and finding seeds in almost every nugget. The way I see it, light dep is just as similar to indoor as it is outdoor and from certain setups could be argued more so.

Have you gone under your tarp when the most amount of light is hitting it? (I assume morning) Go in, seal back up, sit for a solid 5 minutes. How dark is it? Hopefully darker than a moonlit evening.

Other things that play a factor are the obvious. Basically everything that takes away from a plant having optimal health is potentially suggesting to the plant to do what it can to reproduce as it may be dying sooner than it thought. This "mechanism" is very apparent with the cherry pie especially, as well as many other well known clone only strains.

If the amnesia haze cut you have is the core cut it will take a solid 12 weeks to finish. (properly imo) The potency should be TOP notch though. I too made a potentially stupid decision by adding one plant to the light dep that flowers a solid 2 weeks more than the others. The decision however, was very conscious, as I really want to see how a stretchy sativa performs in dep.

Hope I did an alright job touching on that. (just woke up) If anything else comes to mind to be discussed lemme' know. :tiphat:

GCG, I'll be curious to see how your longer-flowering plant does in light dep.

I also found your comments about certain strains and stress interesting...last year I ran a couple of C99 crosses (c99 x [Tom Hill DC x Haze f2]) in the black box and both got nanners. I was closing at 5:30 or so and reopening after full dark.

I think it was the hot afternoon sun that did it. I rigged a tarp like a sail to take most of the direct light, but it still got pretty hot in there.

This year it's 7 to 7, so not much strong light at pull. Plus a 6-inch inline to pull out that hot, moist air. And none of that cross in the box.

Of course, the plants are all looking sad as hell after that night a few nights back...

GCG - Thanks a ton buddy ! Very informative. Can't wait to grow this beast under full sun then ! I have been inside the tarp before pulling in the morning, when it's the lightest, and there's no visible light leaks. It's essentially full darkness, much moreso than on a fully moonlit night. But I suppose that's just the name of the game with some strains then. Lolll 12 weeks, not surprised, but thankfully only a couple and they're situated perfectly against the edge so I'll just build a couple individual hoops when we're ready to chop. Awesome post, I appreciate it.

Mapin - How is the pull at 7 this year compared to last years at 5ish? Did you set it back due to the heat? I hear ya, just with the plastic on and the sides open, it's easily 10+ degrees inside. Can truly feel that greenhouse effect going to work...

Hope all your ladies pop back nicely everyone ! Happy farming

Thanks for the informative posts all, much appreciated. Hermaphroditic plants are a pain in the ass. I've noticed alot of the norcal kush crosses have a tendency to pop a couple beans near the end of their cycle... ?? I've never really noticed if it's stress/strain/environment...blah blah blah. Really like the thoughts and info gcg. We will keep battling these things. Mother nature really is a beast /respect.

Hoss, so far so good with the 7-7 tarping.

My dep is in a channel running east-west, with trees on either side, so 6:30-ish I start getting shade on the box.

Temps have been lower since I've been pulling (just three days now), but my sense is that this timing will work much better once things really heat up. (We are at 3500', so it rarely gets above 90 here even in the heart of the summer.)

NICE....Great points, regarding this issue with tha Cherry Pie.

When I ran the CP, outdoors last year, there wasn't one plant that showed any males pods.

However, all my indoor runs, they show up every time, some times less often, than other runs.

It seems they only show male balls, in the lower canopy, never in the tops....Maybe less direct light, and higher humidity cause this with the CP.

I do know that there is a high percentage, of the male pollen sacks, throw sterile pollen, but there is some that is fertile, as GCG mentioned, there is some that do get pollenated, and produce viable seed.

So, with that said, with my first Light Dep, I did have a few show up but it was manageable for me to just go through and pluck them off.

I also used a spray bottle with water, sprayed the areas where the pollen sacks were located, before I plucked them off, to minimize pollination.

Haven't seen any swollen calyxes, yet, And I'm going on week 5 of flowering.

I wouldn't fret, over this, because the Cherry Pie is DANK!
So what if you get a few seeds....as long you don't have thousands falling out of an oz.

I am OK with it......I love Cherry PIe!

Garden is Looking good Bro...

Peace
Endur

Mani - Any signs of herms this year at 7-7 tarp pull? Curious to hear if that made a difference. Same genetics if so?

Endur - Another informative post on the Pie sir, thanks very much. Alll of mine have come from the lower inner's just as you mentioned. But with the quality it's spittin out so far I'm truly not complaining

Fellow farmers, it's a pleasure. We're very happy with how things are progressing out here in the hills. Weather is cooperating, girls are happy, an work's gettin done.

Hoop 3. Likely about to be totally ripped out. Don't think it's worth it at this stage. Lots of lessons learned. Unfortunate

Endur thanks for stopping in. The fragrance on the cherry is unreal. It overwhelms all other smells in the hoopy. Very pleased with this lady. Afgoo has probably more trichome production than ive ever seen on a plant, hence the name im sure. Hope the weather is good for everyone!

Great looking spot fellas! What kind of soil did you guys use in hoop 3?

Thanks for stoppin by Bubble. Hoop #3 consisted of a local organic compost/top soil mix with some perlite added in. Am surely learning first hand the consequences of using a basic bulk dirt...

Hey Hoss, I nixed the C99 cross that hermied in the box, just running it outside this year.

Most of what's in there did fine last time: U2 x Tom Hill Monkey Haze and Querkle x Monkey Haze are the main ones.

And these are all seed plants FWIW.

Mapinguari thanks for stopping by. Those are some interesting sounding crosses. c99 is a great strain. The others you speak of I have no experience with but sound very interesting. Much safer nixing the herms in the box than running into issues. Cherry Pie's are doing great so far.

Hope everybody is holding on through this heat, should be through the worst of it by now!!!

Quick update as we round the home stretch on the hoops. That heat wasn't very fun but all is well. Topped out at 105, an even hotter in the hoops as you can imagine. Nugs starting to swell up. I love the daily growth at this stage.
